  1. In my early days of boating, a while back, one of my favourite mooring spots used to be alongside what is now shown on the map, as Dilham Broad just south of Honing Lock - we didn't get disturbed much, if at all, and made the mooring at Coltishall Lock seem a bit like Piccadilly Circus. We both appreciated that and took full advantage of it!
  2. Indeed you may be right but that does not take into account the fact that the owner of the last section south of Honing Lock, does not want it restored and connected to the rest of the Broads!
  3. Vaughan - you must be getting old!! £250k???? Nearer £400k!!! Its probably a stock boat - the last thing those type of builders want to do is lay off workers, so keep them busy building another boat!
  4. Change is inevitable - its been "happening" on the Broads ever since I was a little lad. And long before that!! As you get older you find change hard to accept, but here we are some 75 years on and to me it still has its special appeal, and only some of its changed. To read many comments, you would think the whole area is being driven into destitution by JP and his acolytes -its not the first recession that the Broads has survived nor will it be the last! I suspect the same comments were being made back in 2007/08 - its called a cycle and yes, it will recover and yes, it will happen again in future. As for Horning, don't forget the trend to electric dayboats - perhaps it will get taken over by GridServe and it will have a Costa Coffee, an M & S Food. You could use the Staithe and Willow premises which will soon be free!! However the biggest danger is not the BA,JP, or many individuals concerns of today, but rising sea levels that will do most damage I suspect!
  5. Plenty of bigger boats still moor there - I was not aware of the day boat rule!
  6. Don't suppose they mean that THEY will open it, but a new tenant might well breathe new life into it. Trouble is they have strong competition from the Greyhound just down the road

    Flooding

I profess to know nothing about the science of hydrology and its impact on Broadland water movement, but I would like to bet that the new Yarmouth bridge has very little to do with the flooding currently being seen! Broadland has seen worse consequences of heavy rain - what about 1912????

    Flooding

Add to water levels rising, and the fact the south east is slowly sinking, not much hope for the low lying spots is there? Still, wont worry me - will be long gone!!!!!

    Flooding

Dredging is never just the answer - trouble is you need to be able to release water from the whole of upstream areas at a slower pace. Dredging merely allows the incoming tide to come in further, thereby often restricting the outflow when required. Thats exactly whats happened in the Somerset Levels around the River Parrott I believe. The last thing you want is more water arriving in Yarmouth at the wrong time - they have only this year finished raising the harbour walls to prevent overspill. Some people around the rivers emptying into the Wensum in Norwich have been calling for the sluices at New Mills to be opened more - thats ok if the water has anywhere to go,not if its already high tide the other side. Its a delicate balance to be maintained I guess.
  10. I see from the EDP that following complaints, they will be reviewing the licence for the pub. Perhaps if the Authorities cannot stop him one way ,they will try another - although to be fair that has nothing directly to do with the BA!!!!!! https://www.edp24.co.uk/news/23892439.beauchamp-arms-norfolk-broads-facing-licensing-review/
  11. French Marine in Brundall stock a lot of impellers, including Johnson ones, so if you are in the area pop in - always found them very helpful and for anyone's info, stock Perkins spares.
  12. Possibly - although from what I have read, there have been issues for sometime which have been outstanding. Sadly we have to have rules, planning or otherwise, which we have to abide by and perhaps a much earlier consultation with those at the Planning Authority, the Parish Council, and the Highways Authority, all of whom objected to the proposal, would have clarified issues which brought about this action.
  13. Whilst I know its not very relevant, can anyone remember when the DEFRA grant was cut? I expect that Pally will tell me! Again not very relevant, but it does show how pernicious inflation is and how it can impact all manner of things. Please don't think that this is meant to justify any action whatsoever but leaving the EU will unquestionably have reduced some of the grants available although I think they still get some. As Chris Dobson pointed out in an earlier post on here somewhere, the BA like many other similar institutions finances never look good apart from tolls, purely because their income sources are pretty variable and vary greatly. Yes I know I no longer have a boat, and its easy for me to say!!!
  14. The last posts just show how difficult it is to predict inflation in advance - its a bit of a guessing game not helped by the B of E not having a clue! You might as well pluck almost any figure less than 10% out of the air. For what its worth my view is it will remain higher than expected for longer as it usually does here in the UK - or am I no longer either able to have a view or perhaps even post, now I no longer have a boat? What is good to see hidden away is that they are giving up more space at Yare House so less rent to pay - anecdotally I know someone at NCC who only has to be in the office one day a year!!! Down further south there is an increasing tendency around more people being expected to be at desks more often, than more recently.
  15. Griff - not sure where you are living but the early part of this year, inflation around here was, I think over 10%?
  16. The only similarity of the NWDCT boat to a traditional wherry is the colour scheme methinks.
  17. Doesn't take much working out does it?? After taking the obligatory 50% mark up off, and freight costs, would you trust your life to an 11yr old kid turning out out 50 a day in his old mans garden shed?
  18. Not convinced - Chinese heater without the correct markings showing it met European standards, would almost certainly get your claim thrown out IMHO. Cannot see that a BSS negates that - why do you think Trading Standards confiscate so many? Dom - I wish you well in your defence. I bet no hire yards fit them!!!!!!
  19. And for those of you who have insurance, you can almost certainly take for granted that any request for a claim with those installed, will be an easy get out. As I mentioned on another thread, they refused a small fire claim where I had not had a wiring check throughout the boat, in the last five years. And it was one of the main insurers as well!!
  20. People have always equated "space" with luxury!!! Many many years ago, well about 25, we were out in Turkey with Sunsail and 2 people turned up for a 51 footer!!! The bloke said them, "don't forget your ball of string" so you can find one another - some people just have no idea how big a 51' sailing boat is!!! It did have in mast reefing but I would like to bet they didn't even put the sails up and just motored around - cannot imaging how much sail it could have carried! Frightening!!!!
  21. What you all seem to forget is that most contributors here have a wealth of knowledge of the Broads, either because they are regular hirers or, more probably, own their own boats - indeed I cannot think of anywhere, over all my years, I have not been!! And as a result we know what they are missing!! However, persons hiring such boats have no idea, or probably the time. What many here overlook is the fact that many boats are often only out for a few days - long gone are the days when a week was the minimum hire period! In my early days, they would not even hire you a boat for a few days- I remember going to yards, sometimes with plenty of boats lying unused and asking for a short hire, and I was never successful! "No - we don't do that" was an oft repeated phrase!! Now its probably the norm! So these hirers will probably be very happy with where they can go, just because they just do no have time to cover the backwaters many of us crave for! ( Well, not me anymore - past all that now!)
  22. Unfortunately we had quite a lot of rain, by Norfolk standards - I recorded well over 2 " over a 24hr period and a lot of it has to go through Wroxham and/or Ludham Bridges!! Tides at sea look pretty high too so we could have a blocking situation for a few days.
