  1. Hello Lori, The showers at Beccles yacht station are well worth the £1.75 for a 12 minute shower and well maintained. Love the pictures so far. How did you find the Wherry Hotel did you get to eat there? Regards Alan
  2. Hello Mark, Great sunset pictures, I wish I had been there rather than Sheffield. Regards Alan
  3. Hi Lori, Waiting for day 3! Regards Alan
  4. We have got those gauges as well, they always seem to go from green to red missing out the amber. One of our owners had to sort out the sensor/float switch on one of our tanks a couple of weeks ago that was sticking. Clive are you wanting to take all the fun out of boating, you will be asking us next not to put anything down the toilet that you have not eaten. Regards Alan
  5. Hello Alan, Welcome to the forum. Like yourself we await our next trip down to the Broads, the next time on the boat is at the end of October. Its sounds as if you need to take an extra holiday, it might be an idea to take the benifit of some of these cheaper hire prices that are on offer at the moment. Regards Alan
  6. Hello Jupes, I thought it was light humour! It was so true, but i smerked somewhat. Regards Alan
  7. Hello Wayne, Why not look at some Canon camera's that use the same type of lenses as your AE-1. I still have a A1 Canon and could still use the lenses I have for a number of digital cameras. Regards Alan
  8. Hello Barry, It is looking good, takes me back a lot of years, wish we had the space that you have to work in, our was a small project and filled a standard garage until we had to bring the boat outdoors to finish it off. Regards Alan
  9. Hi Robin, Good story as ever, pity re the Ferry Inn, is the Le-Boat mooring by the thatched house on the corner going into Horning, just before the leg down to Boulters? Regards Alan
  10. Hello Richard, I suggest that you go on the Broads Authority website and check out the 20 mooring places that they are suggesting to double moor at busy times and how they suggest to tying up . The ropes (warps) on most hire craft are short, so this can present a problem on private craft there is usually a number of differing lengths of ropes. In the case you suggest you would have to wait for the crew off of the other boat to return or you would have to move your boat and moor them to the bank, not ideal and crews are not keen on someone messing about with their ropes. If I take a rope to pull someone into a mooring I hold onto it until a crew member ties it off or just do tempory hitch if I have to get another rope for them. Regards Alan
  11. Hello, As teadaemon says if you have invited them to moor then you have to be aware of the pitfalls that can arise. We have been well aware of issues with ropes and mooring on the canals for years, it is common practice to put white plasic bags tied around mooring stakes as a warning for towpath users, I have seen this done on the Broads occasionally. This is something we do if mooring in this manner , if we are using the power hook up to power posts again then you have to use common sense and make sure the cable is neat and tidy and well out of the way of other mooring users. The electric posts at Beccles Yacht station are ideal with the channels to put the cables in is well thought out and safe. Regards Alan
  12. Hello John, Thank you for that I will have a look at it. Regards Alan
  13. This rule of thumb works quite well and has been used on the Broads and canals for many years likewise the average walking speed of 4mph and the amount of wash you make on the banks. On the narrow boats we have been on over the years the revs were, 1000 =4mph 1100=5mph, on our boat it is the same plus just under 1200 revs for 6mph. There are a few 1/4 measured mile points on the Broads, sadly the markers in some locations have seen better days , but you can use them to test your speed against revs. Regards Alan
  14. Hello Soundings, Yes quite a lot of the yards will do that for other hire craft, but I am not sure if they will allow private craft. Maybe Clive will let us know. I asked once if I could moor at a yard that hired yachts, I was shown the door, I went further down the river where 3 people helped me to pull the boat in, all four boats moored spent most of the night knocking in the archors, we also had the mud weights down, it was a bad storm that night. Regards Alan
  15. Hello Everyone, In responce to the Broads Authority on double moorings at certain 24 hour mooring locations and the various debates on the Broads Forums I contacted our insurance broker with regards to our Syndicate stands with regards to any issues caused whilst double moored in these locations. Please see the reply below. Regards Alan Dear Alan Please find email below from Holmans regarding the double mooring. In addition please find attached revised documents noting the doubled excess whilst doubled moored & left unattended. I trust you find all in good order. With kind regards Lisa ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ From: Chris Bassett [mailto] Sent: 03 September 2012 16:09 To: MMI Subject: Insurers policy on Double Mooring outlined in Broads Authority policy.M78531 Hi Lisa This is noted and agreed. However, please note excess is doubled whilst the vessel is double moored unmanned afloat. Whilst insurers have stated double moorings can give rise to a higher frequency of claims they appreciate the reasoning behind the new policy and will continue to monitor. I trust you find this all to be in order and I duly attach an updated cert. Please let me know should you have any queries. 16. Hello Doglover, Welcome to the forum. I think you should have a good time in Ludham, a walk down the lane to the staithe at Womak Water is worth it, lots of people just go down in their cars or walk their dogs. The Kings Arms is ok for a meal or you could have a longer walk over to The Dog at Ludham Bridge. Enjoy your stay. Regards Alan
  17. Hello Richard, Welcome to the forum, look forwards to your posts. Regards Alan
  18. We have used the Teak Wonder and the cleaner/restorer from Wessex Chemicals that is listed in the above post. The products by Wessex we used at the start of the season in late February, the cleaner an restorer brought up our rear steps and bathing platform up a treat. Because of the bad weather during and since we have not been able to use the Teak Wonder, but one of our owners had used it previously. So I can personally recommend the Wessex products. Regards Alan
  19. Hello everyone, I have had a reply from Tim Ellis regarding the work on Vauxhall bridge which has now been delayed, please see below. Regards Alan Good afternoon Alan, Sorry for the length of time that it has taken me to reply but i have been on leave and had a hetic return! The works to the Vauxhall bridge have been delayed and we are now hoping tocommence mid October 2012. We are currently working with the Broads Authority to develop a plan that will mean the air draft is not affected from what it is at the moment even with the scaffold in position. Once the details of this has been agreed a revised Notice to Mariners will be published. 20. The current speed limits seem to make no sense in some places. Take for example that you pass Wroxham Broad going towards Wroxham and the speed limits drops after the second entrance/exit from the broad. If the BA thinks that there is an issue in this area why not include the speed limit change before the broad and if the BA thinks that there is not an issue in the area why not leave the speed limit change until boats get to the start of the houses. Speed limits also seem to go up and down fo little or no reason, yet where they should alter for moorings they do not, this is the case leaving Brundall towards Norwich. It seems a nonsense to put a 24 hour mooring in a 6mph and not reduce the speed limit before and after the mooring area. Regards Alan
  21. I agree with pks1702 re the tidal area's and would include Yarmouth Yacht station we have all had to go at 6 or 7 mph to stop being pushed back down the river. I do however agree that all boats should slow down for moored craft including the commercial craft as well, some of these trip boats seem to rush past moorings in the evenings. Going back to our early canal days this was always done but can be a pain these days on the canals because of the length of the moorings, not uncommon the have private, long term BWB and visitor moorings going on for miles rather than yards in some locations and on both sides of the canal. Regards Alan
  22. Hello kadsena, It could be a typo (Ludham Village) but hours spent on Womak Water are not wasted, one of my favorite spots on the Broads. If you can get amooring on the staite it is a short walk to the village. You can walk all the way through the village on a longer walk to Ludham Bridge. Regards Alan
  23. Hello, Just to let you know that I have posted in the For Sale section the latest update on the shares for sale on Ranworth breeze. Regards Alan
  24. Hello JP, I would have thought that any of the boatyards with crainage or with adry dock could undertake this type of work. Are you just wanting the bottom done or will it be all of the boat? Usually on just the bottom most companies that do this type of work regularly charge by the foot. If you are having the boat out of the water it may be wise to test the thickness of the bottom plates in case you need any repairs done before painting. Are you also replacing the anodes? Regards Alan
  25. Hello Terrier, Glade to hear that the holiday was good and that you will be back. It is good to know that some of the boat yards get it right. If all the boat yards gave the good service that you received more people would come back to the Broads. Regards Alan
