  1. Hello Strowager, Whilst the Broads Authority may be a member of the National Parks, the Norfolk Broads is not a National Park at the moment even though there are people at the BA that would wish it is. We have a national park on our doorstep, The Peak District Nation Park is only 5 miles from where I live. This type of park protects the rights of hikers, farmers and people living in the area of the park. The trouble with the plans for the Norfolk Broads IMHO would impair the rights for users of boats, fishermen and hikers under certain conditions and as such needs to be thought of carefully. Regards Alan
  2. Hello Simon, What is needed is an agreement with a number of hire companies to provide day boats as part of their weekly hire fee and space to moor up whilst they are above Potter Heigham. Herbert Woods would be the ideal company to provide the day boats due to location but it could also be an opportunity for a new company or another roll for the pilot. I know you can hire day boats and I have done for above Wroxham but an all in price for the facility from an hire company would save the hirer a lot of messing about. What are your thoughts Clive? Regards Alan
  3. Hello LadyC, Glads to hear that overall you enjoyed your revisit to the Broads. If you visit again why not check out the Southern Broads, however even if you do enjoy the peacefull cruising we have down here, please keep it to your self. Regards Alan
  4. Fuel costs are an issue and are just an extra charge on a holiday. When we went on a canal holiday in June and completed the Cheshire Ring in a week we were billed for £144 and we cruised for 10 to 12 hours per day and had the heating on all day and night. I would suspect that Saltire also had the heating on a fair amount of time as well. Reading the posts they went a fair way and covered most of the broads apart from beyond Potter Heigham. I always seems a shame to me that a lot of boats in marina's never seem to move, the owners can pay all the fees, so is the problem of not having time to enjoy their boats or is it not having the cash to pay for the fuel? Regards Alan
  5. Hello Saltire, Glad to hear that you had a good trip and are chilled out. The worst thing about any form of boating holiday whether it be on the cannals or the Broads is getting back into a car and driving home the shock of traveling at more than 4 to 6miles on hour back to the real world is frighting and you wish you were back on the boat. Are you now planning your next visit? Regards Alan
  6. John did ask anyone to come to the Autumn Meet, the owner that should have been on Ranworth Breeze on the dates of the meet in the end did not get down to the boat due to work commitments, if it had been during our allocation I would have called in to say hello. Down on the boat this weekend to give a new owner some training and back down for our allocation on the 30th October for a week. If anyone is around we could meet up. Regards Alan
  7. Hello Barry, Thank you for the timber fix. It is all looking very good buy when are the lower forward planks going in? Regards Alan
  8. Hello Barry, It all seems to be coming together, and a great project. Are you going to show us wood freeks pictures of the grain in the teak you are using. I have not come across "Djecke oil" is it a typo or a real product? How are you finishing off the hull? Regards Alan
  9. Hello Jill, A few years ago I would have been able to help out with the conkers, we had a tree on the grass verge outside of house, sadly it was felled about five years ago by the local autorities due to it having "Bleeding Canker". A lot of trees have gone to the above but I have just found the following information, please see below. 'Bleeding canker' was brought into the country around 20 years ago from Asia. Now around half the horse chestnut trees in the country are infected and thousands have had to be felled, including ancient specimens on National Trust land. Arboriculturalists had feared the disease, that causes the trees to 'bleed' from lesions on the trunk, could kill all horse chestnuts in Britain. But a new study published in the online journal PLoS One offers hope. Dr David Studholme and his team at The Sainsbury Laboratory in Norwich managed to work out the genome sequence of the bacteria that causes the disease. This should enable scientists to identify which genes are killing the trees and eventually find a cure. Regards Alan
  10. Hello John & Mary, I hope all goes well for your event this weekend and that the weather is kind to you. Regards Alan
  11. I am not sure what these things do in the corner of the utillity room, but understand they must be prayed to and fed on a regular basis. I am called in to look at it from time to time by my tearfull wife, its on the blink again! Out come the tools the back is off and a repair is done, brushes last time, ordered and installed, but unable to work for acouple of days, gloom all round, drawers getting empty, there must by a connection. Why is it that the machine always breaks down on perfect drying weather and never the rainy days? Regards Alan
  12. Hello Lori, Thank you for the information, I noticed last week there seemed to be issues after the camera's were unavailable. I saw that you had posted on the site. I have tried to reply to comments left but even though I was logged in it would not let me post, this was a while ago. It is a pity that a lot of forums can get nasty. The main thing is that the camera's are still working and that more may be coming on line. Its great to see what the weather is like at Wroxham when you are sat in a windowless office in Sheffield. Regards Alan
  13. Hi Stu, Sorry to hear of your bad news, there is a lot of this about these days, nearly everyone I speak to is just hanging on or at the point of going under. I wish you luck for the future. Regards Alan
  14. Hi Stu, I thought you may be going back. Loddon to Acle is around 24 miles so you should make that easily dependant on how you get on through Yarmouth. Another 5 miles would get you to Womak Staithe or 6miles to Potter Heigham. Just a thought. Regards Alan
  15. Hello Bruce, They finished the work last year or the year before, it was mostly at the River Yare end and there is a lot of bends in the Chet now. The banks could be better in places on the run up to Loddon and there is a number of these yellow wooden posts to be found. The grassy area under the trees up from the staithe provides good mooring if you can not moor at the staithe. Ranworth Breeze is about the same length as your boat but not as wide we can see everything like yourself from the upper helm the problem on the bends is that the other lower craft can not see you, it is then time for using the horn and hoping for the best, and pulling well into the bank. Regards Alan
  16. Hi Stu, Great story so far and yes Loddon is a great place to moor. We all await your next day. Are you going to Norwich or heading back to the norther rivers? Regards Alan
  17. It is a good journey to Loddon and is a refuge out of bad weather, but as you both say quite tight, I seem to meet boats on every corner rather than on the straight sections and of course a lot of these boat are a lot wider than Ranworth Breeze. Plenty of pubs in loddon, yet to try them all, but working on it. Regards Alan
  18. Hi Stu, It was a good shot of the boat, and the evening looks like it was a good one, nothing better than sitting on the back of a boat with a glass of wine or a beer and watching the sun go down. I wish I was on the river now instead of the end of October. Please keep us up to date with your story. Regards Alan
  19. Hello tiddlerbasher, Welcome to the forum and the world of boating & fishing, there are plenty of wide rivers on the Southern Broads, we loads of fishermen/women in boarts just before you get into Brundall and on the some of the broads. If you get better results from your dinghy you may have to change your login to whopperbasher! Regards Alan
  20. Hello Saltire, Be aware that there may be work on the river at Yarmouth on the old Vauxhall Railway Bridge, work was supposed to start in early Setember but I was forwarded information that this would be delayed until October by the engineer (Tim Ellis) in charge of the job. I have just checked on the Broads Authority website but there has not been an update since the notice that I have will post below. At 8 ft 3 inches you should not a problem at Yarmouth other than the times of slack water. Watch out for the river height markers they are not very clear at the lower measurements also there is not too many of them. We need 9ft 8 inches to get through Yarmourth and going down river if we can see 7 full rungs on the ladders at Yarmouth Yacht Station we know there is 10 foot clearance under the two bridges. Regards Alan NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that Norfolk County Council will be carrying out repairs on the Vauxhall Railway Bridge (near the River Bure entrance) from 10 September 2012 – 25 January 2013 Phase 1 - Erection of the scaffolding will take approximately 2 weeks from 10 to 24 September and will be encapsulated and marked by high visibility tape and orange flashing lights. A safety boat will be in operation. During this period vessels normally able to navigate through the bridge will still be able to pass through but delays may be encountered. Phase 2 - The river will be closed to mariners between 00:00 3 December and 00:00 9 December 2012 to enable works to be carried out in the navigation channel and no access will be available. Warning notices will be placed upstream and downstream of the works. At all other times vessels normally able to navigate through the bridge will still be able to pass through. Please approach the area with extreme care and caution at all times taking note of any signage or direction. Any queries concerning the works should be addressed to Norfolk County Council Resident Engineer Tim Ellis who can be contacted on 07885579597 or tim.ellis@norfolk.gov.uk Angie Leeper Asset Officer Broads Authority 2 Gilders Way Norwich NR3 1UB 13 August 2012
  21. Hi Jill, I think its time to give winnieqinjiaxin the boot. Regards Alan
  22. The boat in the picture is also similar to the Woodwich which was a boat that you made from a set of plans re the making all the frames and once set out with the keel was covered in marine ply using bronze gripfast nails. Regards Alan
