  1. Hi Fred, Yet another example of an unelected quango assuming authority it just does`nt have.
  2. Those photo`s from How hill are amazing. The autumn colours especially in the fourth pic of the tree, absolutely stunning.
  3. I`m going to make your day John, I disagree with you on this. Climate change has been going on for millions of years and has NEVER been caused by mans influence. We had a discussion about this on the forum a while ago. I think you may possibly confusing yourself with " Global Warming", which itself was only ever a politically advantageous theory. Remember all the things the campaigners protested about?, 4x4s being a prominent one, yet as soon as the tax on them went through the roof, all of a sudden they became safer for the environment, just because you payed more tax on them?. There`s absolutely NOTHING wrong with diesel cars, the big problem for the chancellor of the exchequer is the fact they`re now doing double the mpg of the same car with a petrol engine, ergo, only half the tax being payed. It`s always adviseable to question the motives, honesty, and integrity of authority, and have an open mind, an example is the recent decade of parliamentary corruption in many forms.
  4. Hi Cockatoo, Any chnce you can walk down the side of the railway in Brooms yard and check on Lightning 😂?.
  5. I'l give it a lash too, even though I've never done one, and have no idea how you do it?.
  6. In exactly the same vein, I did one back in the early 80s when one of the things you had to come back with was a wiper. One of the team members pulled out his handkerchief.
  7. When helming Lightning from inside, I always like to sit on a couple of cushions on the seat so I get a better view. It does mean however, that my head is in the recess below the sliding Hatch. I totally agree about standing up at the hem though, everything seems to be well placed for comfort.
  8. Not sure which one I would prefer, the Pearl is only 3 ft longer for an extra cabin, so possibly not so spacious, plus you have to slide the roof down and fold the windscreen flat to get under the bridges, not good in the pouring rain. But on the other gand, the Diamond will likely be more spacious, without the need to drop a canopy and screen, but the visibility from the helm is very restricted unless you slide the Hatch back and stand at the helm with your head out of the open Hatch.
  9. Hi Simon, On Lightning, the 4% share weeks alternate seasons each year, Winter / Summer, then Spring / Autumn. I think Thunder may do the same, but they still draw from a hat, whereas our`s all automated on a rolling block basis. I know Thunder has "prefered weeks, but not sure about the 4% share.
  10. When we had a new engine fitted in Lightning, we replaced our old Perkins with a volvo D255. It turns out the D255 shares the same engine block as the old Perkins unit, so there was no need to change any of the engine mountings and positions or gearbox mountings etc. If you do some research, you may well find a new engine that again shares the same block as the original, but with more up to date fuel efficient heads and injection etc, which again could save you a few pounds. We also sold our old engine (as a good runner with high hours) to recoup some cash.
  11. SSSSSSHHHHHHHHHH, our Chairman reads this forum, he has`nt cracked on yet
  12. Hi John, Why not give Graham a call at Maffett Marine. He was raised on Perkins diesels ever since he was a small boy, and has a good reputation for engine re-builds and maintainance. When we used to hire from Maffetts, they always re-built their engines rather than replaced them, and we NEVER EVER had any problems with them. Personally, i would go down the re-build route, as if in the case of Marshmans friend you have an issue, at least you do have someone to go back to. The best advice i can offer is to do some research into both, and make your decision, but ALWAYS ask for a "written quote" with a garunteed time frame for the work, and NEVER an "estimate", which are usually woefully short of the final bill.
  13. One of the big problems with selling shares cheaper than their true value is tha accidental encouragement of attracting those that see syndicate ownership as a cheap form of hiring, so are not inclined to look after the boat. If a share is sold at its full value, say £6,500 ish for Thunder and Lightning, and around £4,500 for the Shadows and Silver Cloud, any new buyers would consider the boat as "an investment" rather than an up front cheap hire fee.
  14. One option John would be one of those camouflage nets the soldiers put over gun emplacements and tanks etc 😂
  15. Or the Sugarbabes record "Round Round"?. Chill Factor also did an apt one, "Round and around". Whichever one, my head is still spinning 😂.
  16. You can`t beat pushing a very hard tide going up river crossing Breydon. Well, actually, yes you can, go AFTER lws.
  17. Hence my point in my post re "Possibly Mans Intervention" Vaughn. A point i know all about down here in West Hampshire and East Dorset re Otters and the devastation they`re creating through being a protected species. However, that`s a different subject for another thread. Getting back to Peters original thread, i love to look at Birds of prey, and am always watching Marsh Harriers, Buzzards, and Kestrels over the reeds, marshes, and fields by the riverside. I`ve seen Kingfishers (though not many), Cormorants, Barn Owls, and all manor of other birds, some of which i don`t know, but one of the nicest things i`ve ever seen on the Broads was in May 97 when aboard one of Moores "Merrymore" class. On the Sunday morning, we were cruising up the Ant in glorious sunshine with the top back, and watching what must have been hundreds, possibly a thousand or more Swallows flitting around taking the marsh fly`s on the wing. When we woke up to a damp morning due to heavy early morning condensation, i noticed most of the boats had black dots all over them. It was`nt until our trip up the Ant that morning i realised it was millions of dead marsh fly`s.. There must have been a plague of them, a pain to clean the boat down, but great for the birds.
  18. I totally agree, what was once common are now a rarity (like Coots on the Broads), and others that were once a rarity are now common. It`s a natural thing where everywhere is a habitat at any one time for some species or other, then when that species has possibly exhausted their needs from that habitat, they naturally move on opening up that location for another species to prosper. Sometimes it`s nothing to do with exhausting food supplies etc, possibly because of mans intervention, but the outcome is the same, they move elsewhere and others move in, though with different needs.
  19. Yes, sorry, i wilfully stand corrected. For some reason i`m always confused over the name of them.
  20. Yes it is David, though i`m now one cylinder down , i own a Speed Twin.
  21. Exactly the same for me. My problem is i`ve forgotten my password, as i automatically get logged in when i come on to the forum. Now, every time i log on, i have to sign in, luckily, my name and password (which is shrouded) comes up, and i just click on it which signs me in. Also, when i do sign in, i get the same as above where it has my name up, yet says something is wrong, then when i click on browse etc, everything is ok?. If any of the mods have access to my password, could you pm it to me so i can write it in my password book?.
  22. It certainly is. We in the Lightning syndicate also have the same policy re cleaning. If an owner wishes to use a valeting service, they can, but we (Karen and me) have never used it, and so far, we`ve always been complimented on how clean we leave Lightning, though this September, she was very grubby around the water line, something we can`t do unless we had a dinghy, which we don`t have. I have also noticed how clean Moonlight Shadow looks on the outside, her white and blue livery really stands out. Many thanks for a great write up Helen, and some great pics too. I particularly like the ones of your return up the Yare where the water is like a sheet of glass.
  23. I`m partial to a strong Earl Grey, with milk and one sugar, but mostly in the warmer summer months. Otherwise, a good old cup of Tetley or Yorkshire tea, NOT decaf though
  24. It would have to be a mug of tea for me, i`m a bit intollerant of alcahol
