Lulu
12th August I woke up at 6.00 and didn't want to waste our last morning so went and sat on my ‘perch’ to absorb the tranquility and sunrise We left Stracey Arms at 8.00am and basically had the river to ourselves. It was utter bliss. The weather was glorious. This was the first day where there was no timetable to stick to other than getting to the marina by sometime in the late afternoon. We had no plan on where to go so we ignored all the speed limits and pootled very slowly back towards Horning. We went to have a look at South Walsham. The river was so still and very calming. Because Selsie hasnt seen much of the Broads so far, it was a special moment seeing his reaction as the broad opened up before us, similar to when he first saw Breydon.
Lulu
12th August continued We decided to see if there were any moorings at Ranworth but didnt hold out much hope and sure enough it was full. We debated going to Salhouse and walk to the pub for lunch but in the end decided to go back to the marina to top up the fuel tank and get a pump out. As we wound our way back to our mooring I patted Luna and thanked her for looking after us on this massive adventure for us novices. Selsie said she had been brilliant and hadnt missed a beat. He was just starting the reverse into our berth and the engine cut out! We managed to get her in using the ropes. We couldn’t believe it but Selsie said he thinks it was a dirty injector. He got it to start again thankfully. We worked out we had cruised for a total of 18 hours and had used 2.27 litres of fuel per hour. The holiday was amazing. We have learnt so much and cannot wait to get out and about again. I know we wouldn’t have pushed ourselves to go south this year so thank you Janet Anne for giving us no choice! It was brilliant and we met up with old friends and made new ones. Special hugs to Hazelgirl and Timbo’s Gracie (hope the ducks are happy in your butterfly room Gracie ;) Luna’s log to be continued......soon I hope 6

addicted
HI Sam, So glad your "mission" was so successful, We saw you depart from the marina but had gone home by the time you returned. Have very much enjoyed your blog and the trip sounds to have been an absolute joy. We are at home at the moment and likely to remain as long as the weather is as dreadful as predicted. However when we are on board do feel free to pop round again. We enjoyed our chat it was very nice to meet you. Carole

Lulu
14.9.19 & 15.9.19 Arrived at the marina where we spent two nights getting Lulu our greyhound used to the boat. Selsie has made some bespoke steps to assist with getting Lulu in and out of the boat. Our parents arrived for a quick stop on their boat they have hired. Lulu was most surprised to see ‘grandma and grandad’
Lulu
16.9.19 - Hound test cruise day We left the marina at about 9.00. We just decided to go to St Benets. A short cruise to see how Lulu would react. She surprisingly decided she was happier on her bed over the engine in the helm rather than in the saloon at the back. I saw a bittern on the way but unfortunately hadn’t got my camera to hand . After mooring up we went for a walk to the abbey as a reward for Lulu’s bravery. My parents joined us on their boat for a few hours before going up the Ant where they met Seagypsy. We spent the rest of the day NBN people spotting - Hazelgirl, Petersjoy, Robin, Speedtriple and Nyx.
YnysMon
Lovely, thanks for posting. I'm so glad to hear that Lulu was happier on board than you had anticipated. Hope she will many happy voyages with you! Helen
addicted
Your tale of introducing your dog to the joys of boating reminds me of the occasion when we were looking after my daughter's 12 week old Cocker Spaniel named Bertie. We took him with us when we went to re- commission the boat after the winter lay up. We spent a few days doing various chores around the boat without going anywhere until finally we were ready to take that first cruise of the new season. Bertie was asleep on the cockpit floor, below which was the engine. Tony started the engine and Bertie leapt up and dived down into the saloon without even touching the stairs. He stayed there for a few minutes looking very worried indeed after which he crept slowly up the stairs and put out a tentative paw to test the cockpit floor and deciding there was nothing to worry about came back up and resumed his sleeping position. That was the first of countless times we had Bertie on board. He loved the boat and used to get very excited when we were on the journey there and got near the marina. As soon as we arrived, he would jump out the car and tear off down the bank till he arrived at our boat where he would leap in the minute we opened up. Sadly Bertie died aged 13 about 5 years ago and we miss him still. Carole

Were you mud weighted at Ranworth on Saturday and rowed out in a dingy if so it was me moored on the corner of the cut who said I would get you in one of the Oxbridge crews
Lulu
No, we haven’t gone to Ranworth as we need side on moorings only with our hound. My parents were there moored at Ranworth island.
Ray
Lovely to see you both this morning, Luna looks absolutely stunning, beautiful boat! As you came round the corner I said to Gill that's the kind of boat we're looking out for to say hello to you guys, couldn't believe it when it was actually you 👍
Lulu
Thank you Ray. She’s still a bit on the scruffy side close up but she’s getting there. Great to see you too! I couldn’t hear over our engine but we did the usual mad waving thing lol. If we hadn’t had Lulu on board, we would have turned around and moored up for a natter but she had just started to settle.

Lulu
17.9.19 We woke up at 6.30 and I took Lulu for a walk to the St Benets Abbey. So peaceful and the light was stunning. We just stood by the Abbey and took it all in. The pic below of Lulu will be one of those very special memories for me. We left at 900 and went up to Potter Heigham but no room to moor so turned around and moored up at the entrance to Thurne Dyke where we stayed for the rest of the day. We had lunch at the Lion. What an excellent pub. Food brilliant and Lulu was offered a bowl of water. Fantastic service and will definitely be returning. Hazelgirl and crew went past on the way to Womack. The wonders of text meant we knew they were on their way so we got ready to do the madly waving thing that us boaters seem to do! We thought we spotted a prop warmer around their boat but all was ok. Hazelgirl sent me a photo saying it was a load of white foam! Lightening moored beside us for a while. So lovely to meet more forum members. A pleasure to meet you both and Lightening is a stunning boat. Hope to see you both soon!

Lulu
18.9.19 After a very chilly night at Thurne Dyke, as we have no heating, we decided to make our way back to the marina and have a night hooked up to shore power with our new ceramic heaters. It was a lovely cruise back and we saw Ray and his wife on the stunning Dakota. We did the madly wave thing as usual. Lulu had just settled otherwise we would have turned around and moored up for a natter. We got back and relaxed doing absolutely nothing for the rest of the day. Our new heaters were very welcome in the evening. We have both said that fitting heating in the boat is going to be a must.
Lulu
19.9.19 We dithered about discussing if we were going out thinking maybe Lulu needed a day off from cruising. She gets very shakey as soon as the engine starts but the advice from quite a few dog owners is to persevere and they will get used to it all, and the weather was so perfect so we headed for the moorings by Wroxham Broad. Unfortunately they were full so we turned around and came back. We were still out for nearly 3 hours and Lulu was so much better and even ate her bacon twizzler en route so we think she’s finally thinking boating is actually ok. We got a pump out and topped up with water and chilled out for the rest of the day again in the marina and cleaning the boat.
Ray
It was great to see you, we thought Luna looked beautiful! We have heating, but this week have been cold in the morning because our dog sleeps in front of the vent... I take back all those times I wished she would sleep on the floor lol! Your lovely pooch is getting there! Well done, all your effort is paying off 👍
Lulu
20.9.19 My parents met us for lunch at the Ferry Inn on the way to handing their boat back. They have had a fantastic holiday. They last hired we think in 1993. When my father saw the photos of our trip to the Beccles Wooden Boat Show and me FaceTiming them as we crossed Breydon, dad immediately booked a holiday. They have got the Broads Bug back and I think will be booking again next year. I know they met a few forum members along the way and said everyone was so lovely and helpful. This holiday was all about introducing Lulu to boating and we are really pleased she was getting better each day. Its been a tough few weeks for us as we had to have our other dog put down and we think this probably did her and us good to be thinking about different things. Highlight was St Benets and will always now be incredibly special to me.
YnysMon
So pleased to hear of your trip on Luna...even more pleased to hear that Lulu is getting used to the boat. Don’t leave it too long before you take her on another trip. (That’s an incentive to get the heating sorted!)
