Loddon - Draft

Hi folks,

Purely theoretical question I hope... I had a dig around and no one seems to say don't do it, but I was curious. If I took my Cruiser down towards Loddon... what are my chances of running aground? :)

The specs say my boat has a 0.86m / 2.8ft draft.. which I assume with a planing is a bit deeper than the hireboats that moor down there? But I don't see loads of reports of people getting stuck! Any advice?

Hi Tom,

Do it mate, you should`nt have any problems. Maybe at low water springs there may be an issue, but at normal mid tides or above, you should`nt have a problem. Loddon basin was also dredged out a few years back and has a good depth of water at all states of the tide.

There seems to be a meth about Loddon/Chedgrave. I must go down there about four or five times a year.Never have I had a problem there.

We were there in November last year and saw an ex hire cruiser being towed off the mud at the moorings in the corner of the basin, nearest to the road.  I couldn’t honestly say whether the tides were unusually low on that occasion, but we moored at the other end of the moorings and were okay.

When ever we visit Loddon we have about half a metre under our keel on Ranworth Breeze and we have never had a problem.

The basin is not normally an issue for most boats since being dredged, though the corner nearest the road as previously described is starting to silt up again and can be as little as two feet at low water.

The area of main concern is the old ford just past the end of the boatyards which is a stony bar across the river and can be less then two feet at low springs. I've touched bottom there above once. There is quite a rise and fall on the Chet so just avoid low water and you should have no trouble.

Our cruiser has a 3ft draft and we have been down there many times with it and have never run aground. 

Just stay off the inside of the bends, which is common sense on any river anyway!
