ranworthbreeze
Good afternoon Can boaters please be aware that the Met Office has issued a weather warning of strong winds on Friday 21 August, between 04:00 to 18:00. This is expected to lead to some travel disruption. We are issuing the following safety advice to all users of the waterways. For urgent assistance please contact Broads Control on 01603 756056 or Broads.Control@broads-authority.gov.uk. For emergencies use 999. · Check the Met Office website for weather updates. · Regularly check that mooring lines are tight and have not worked loose. · Stow any loose items from above deck to below deck. · Use caution when moving about the vessel, especially when topside. · Moor away from over hanging trees (they will be in full leaf and have a large area to catch the wind). Branches may fall. · High winds can make the surface of the water choppy, so boats may rock. Ensure fenders are out and spacing kept between neighbouring moorers. · Getting on and off a vessel in high winds can be difficult; always put your lifejacket on before you board your vessel. · Boat handling is harder in the wind, especially for larger vessels that can catch the wind making manoeuvres difficult. · Disembarking from an exposed mooring will also be harder in high winds as vessels may be pushed onto the mooring via the wind. Stay moored until conditions allow you to safety leave. Please see the Met Office website for further information: https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/warnings-and-advice/uk-warnings#?id=390e14b9-4d86-4d91-a464-fb799d7ac67c&date=2020-08-21 Kind regards Karen Karen Tyrrell Administrative Officer Operations Broads Authority Yare House, 62-64 Thorpe Road, Norwich, NR1 1RY Tel: 01603 756035 : karen.tyrrell@broads-authority.gov.uk Broads Authority, Yare House, 62-64 Thorpe Road. JenJen
We are due to go out on the broads in a day boar with our two small children tomorrow. We have zero experience of boating. Would you advise we give it a Miss tomorrow given the weather or will we still manage ok?
grendel
give it a go, but follow any advice from the boatyard at handover, they may give more specific information about the areas you might wish to avoid.

vanessan
I can’t remember having seen such an in-depth warning from the BA before where adverse weather is concerned. Hope people take notice.
ChrisB
Quite rightly. Norfolk as a whole has tragically seen four water related deaths so far. And for most of the summer people were locked down.
MaceSwinger
I can’t remember having seen such an in-depth warning from the BA before where adverse weather is concerned. Hope people take notice. Sadly from what I've seen today, no, many haven't. We've just moored on Glebe Farm at Stokesby and the swarms of day boats with kids on the back (with and without lifejackets) is staggering, and that's with daddy at the helm at full throttle. The river is lumpy enough that there are white-toppers out on the river. I love the Broads but today, from the minute we left Gaye's Staithe around 8am, has been utterly gopping. SwanR
Definitely a lot less windy on the coast at Lowestoft today. Been a day of sunny spells with some hot sunshine and no rain. :)
