  1. Price per linear foot is the only way to go. narrow boats on the Broads use 60 foot of mooring but pay for only 30' by virtue of being half the width they should be. As for hire boats only being charged while in use is a great idea, can we also apply it to all other areas of business so if there is a quiet week the company pays no business rates? Not sure the authorities trying to set budgets are going to be that in favour of it. Charging by horsepower is a shame. Jealousy is a very ugly emotion but unfortunately there is no other reason for suggesting it.
  2. Big difference between Birmingham and Yarmouth is Birmingham is having big money spent on it. The city center has had millions spent and the spending is still going on at a fantastic rate. The City center has changed almost beyond recognition to those that have not visited for over 10 years. The canal network is seen as a jewel but them it is the only available waterfront for expensive apartments and waterside pubs. You don't have to move far from the center to find the less desirable areas that have not been attended to yet but at least they are in the sights of those cleaning up the city. Yarmouth si a thousand times better than Birmingham was but unless it can find the investment it is only going one way.
  3. Have to sat a big thankyou to Richard at SnuggTopz for his service today. We all know how quickly canopy makers respond to a request, well I have to say I know one that breaks all the rules. Clanny today ripped her canopy in a bit of a blow. Being in Birmingham getting to her if something is wrong can be a bit of a problem but when one of my neighbours called me to let me know he had just propped Clanny;s canopy up and there was a rip where stitching had come undone (thanks Kieth) I called Richard up at SnuggTopz. he waa down at Reedham marina in about an hour. stitched up the canopy and replaced the broken stud that he felt caused the problem by letting the wind in in the first place. called me to let me know it was done and when asked how much I owed him responded with "don't worry about it" How is that for service on a canopy that was fitted 15 months ago?
  4. Hi John, can you put Clandestine down, Ian, Heather, Rachel, leccy a must as no other heating
  5. Not sure that they needed a vessel designed for 60 miles off shore and if they do I would love to see the risk assessment that allows river cruisers in novice hands to cross such a dangerous piece of water. Fuel use should, and I am sure will be something that is strictly monitored on this new asset, and there should be little need to use it above tickover. it would be nice to see it published as a separate expense but I have a feeling that is not going to happen. Given the price that was paid for the vessel, it was probably not that different in cost to one of their existing river launches. On the surface they seem to have got a very good deal. I am also really pleased that the boat was brought from a local builder who we know have a proven pedigree. My only worry is that as they are also the provider of service and repairs for the BA. It would have been nice to see the boat separate removing any possibility of accusation that figures could be offset with the service contract but it would also have been very unfair to exclude Goodchilds from the process on the basis that they do a good job of the current maintenance.
  6. You got it Clive, Tescos round by us now build the whole shopping centre, just to make sure they control everything.
  7. the unit can go anywhere you can get gas to it and mount the exhaust fitting within 1m on the hull but as MBA Marine has already said you can not mount any heater, including the diesel fired ones in a petrol engine engine bay or any place that is not sealed from it. they work exactly the same as the diesel versions, air for heating is heated by a heat exchanger within the unit, the combustion side is completely separate, air in and exhaust out for combustion are through the same skin fitting which can not be mounted more than 1m from the unit, this usually sites the unit as it is a good idea not to put it under water. it is better if the air from the cabin is recirculated through the unit as that has already been heated once. You don't need much room round the unit but the exhaust does get hot so you will want to lag this with suitable insulation if you put it anywhere near something heat sensitive. You obviously need as much air in to the unit as it is going to put out into the room but if you have put it somwhere sealed you can put the same ducting on the air inlet as outlet, and pull it from the cabin.
  8. The requirement for venting is no more than an exhaust and an inlet for the air to and from the combustion chamber. Only restriction really is that the exhaust can be no more than 1 meter from the unit. Providing you buy a marine kit the exhaust fitting is with it and involves doing no more than drill ing 2 holes, one above the other, of about 25mm diameter. Fitting really is a piece of cake although apart from running the pipe in one for it from the gas locker (T fitted to the main line inside the locker), the other thing I did was to run the whole length of pipe inside a single length of hose, seal the end at the heater back to the pipe and seal the other end to the gas locker but leave where the pipe exits it open and any leaking gas from a broken pipe (unlikely I know but best safe and all that) will drain back to the gas locker. Other thing I did was fit a bubble tester in the locker for the gas system so that I could check for leaks at the push of a button. If you have LPG on board but no diesel, Propex is probably the best way to go. If you have diesel, providing there is a decent place to connect to then an Ebby or Webo is possibly better even given you will have to service it, something you don't have to do with the Propex. We used to run on a Camping Gaz 907 cylinder which was both expensive and a pain as far as running out. Calor is half the price and at least twice the size so no problem.
  9. As Mark says if you are on Camping Gaz the gas usage can be a bit annoying but the smallest Calor bottle is twice the size of the biggest camping Gaz. With Red now at the price it is I don't think there would be much difference in the running cost if you were to compare it to a diesel heater.
  10. If you have Calor on board they are a very good option, especially for smallish boats. Had the HS1800 on a Sealine 255 26' sports cruiser with an outlet below and one in the cockpit and it kept both the boat and cockpit lovely and toasty. They are completely clean with no smoke. much quieter than diesel and should be basically maintenance free and totally reliable. Having said that I had 2 factory reconditioned ones direct from Propex that gave a few problems with the electronics, in fairness they instantly changed the first with no argument, even sending out a replacement prior to me sending back the the first and when the second gave problems they gave me a fair chunk off the new price to replace it with a new one. that one worked perfectly for the year we had the boat and after meeting the boats second owners since we sold her i can confirm it is still working perfectly 4 years on.
  11. Dave you still have the issue of finding magnesium or Aluminium prop nuts which appear to be in short supply. Not up on anodes for shafts as never had one but could you not just fit a shaft anode in front of your P bracket? Have heard they are not popular with fast seagoing boat owners but on the river I would have thought the disadvantages would be negligible.
  12. Have always bought mine as a kit and the bolts that come with them are stainless if that helps.
  13. One picture every 30 seconds or so would sort of restrict the racing to things that dont move very quickly. should be alright for sail though.
  14. good to see Broom have seen the need for twin engines and trim tabs on river craft, can see an increase in complaints from fisherman on the Yare being on the cards though. Or are the photos not of the actual boats for hire?
  15. not exactly health and safety but at least it looks like the wash is minimal. Can't condone the actions of the poster but there are plenty of inland waterways with no speed restrictions, planing is common on these and unbelievably there are not 100's of deaths per week.
  16. I would agree but in an age when any excuse will do I would inform your insurance in writing of the difference. State that you are happy with your existing documents but felt you should make them aware. Sent from my HTC Sensation Z710e using Tapatalk 2
  17. Now you've told me it is a washing machine it makes sense that Heather hasn't asked me to do the washing up lately.
  18. Have to say the coach makes the london duck look a bit old hat.
  19. That was my reason for asking Mark, If all other national parks have had cables buried then even though the Broads is not officially a National park you would being a member of the family and being afforded the same status in most things would ensure any cables are buried.
  20. Are there power lines through any other member of the national parks family? If so are they buried or above ground?
  21. It is the stock ROM and over the last week it has used 444KB. I know that is not vast but another 2 forums and all my other internet usage has only gone through 235kb, I don't use much mobile data as I am normally on WiFi but given the rate of use for the one forum on TapaTalk which I certainly use no more than the others it seems high and one to watch if on mobile all the time.
  22. Is it normal for tapatalk to use large amounts of data? Next to my android operating system Tapatalk has used the most ony data usage, twice as much as the combined amount of the rest of my internet which covers 3 other forums and ally google stuff. 23. Pike season is now well underway, if you like your fish with teeth.
  24. But at the same time Richardsons have probably a better repeat customer base than most, so I would say it would be a fair representation. Maybe not a 100% factual one but close enough to give an idea.
