  1. Robin, they certainly are designed to be held upright. Although I worked out that I can hold upright but at a 45deg angle (If you hold upright but at 90deg it doesn't work)... All it needs a one way value on the tank to stop the water pouring out.. Maybe other ones have overcome this.. It certainly wouldn't work on decks but I don't think you need it. It's really useful inside the windows though and does save lots of hassle (and towels etc).. I'll let you try it when I see you again.. You will be sold
  2. I'm not sure if anyone noticed me posting on Facebook the last time we was onboard Orca. But we brought one for her. We have a Karcher and it's amazing.. Really works.. Really worth the money and it's reduced the humidity down inside. Only thing is you have to hold upright otherwise you get a bit wet (so if you have things in the way you may need to use a towel) certainly highly recommended though.
  3. Please don't buy it all ... save some for the rest of us
  4. I believe the BA rangers have pdq machines aboard and can take cash as you can pay tolls to them. So yes I suspect you can be fined there and then.. but I'm just guessing. Neil the speed limit is over the ground as it should be as you should be measuring your speed via gps. It's the same on every Port and river across the world.. the ba IMHO are not dreaming things up just to annoy you. Speed limits on the river are to be obeyed IMHO. Edit to add there is no correct way to measure speed through the water. And the speeds should always be in relation to your wash so if you are not speeding but causing too much wash then slow down...
  5. Thanks guys, we are just waiting for a spot to come available on the hardstanding at the boatyard so the buyers can get this boat lifted out for a surey. Although it should be all good we can't do anything until the survey happens but it should be this week.. next week worst case.. Once we know how much money we get we can put offers down.. I was getting stressed but I've calmed down alot now Tad annoying waiting though..
  6. You've answered your own question there....
  7. Hi Branden, I guess it's 4 stroke? If there is emulsification in the oil then it would be a fair indication that the gaskets gone or an oil seal has given up. Did you winterise it correctly? What colour is the smoke? Does it get hot? Is it pumping water? Sadly as I think you suspect outboard repairs aren't cheap if done by dealers. Andy at Kingfisher (Freedom) is close by, you could try Mark (MBA marine), (I don't think Graham at maffetts does outboards) or if you can get it in a car Russell Marine (South Walsham) are outboard specialist or boulters at horning. It's certainly worth trying to do yourself though.. are you sure your other half won't let you borrow the living room floor for a couple of evenings Good luck.
  8. I second what Jonzo says, don't bother painting the blue bits they aren't bad. You can paint under the waterline. It maybe worth chatting to Graham at Maffetts about the other work (and maybe he can give you some history considering he used to run it). But get quotes from lots of Yards, Moonfleet (re)laid our teak flooring and did an amazing job.
  9. Depending on what day you visit Norwich you may find plenty of space in the town centre car parks, there's quite a few, castle mall is right in the centre although can be a bit busier. I think the forum is the other but that's a little further out. I don't think they are overly expensive either. Other than the boats Andrew has mentioned I'd recommend Marthams day boat (http://www.marthamboats.com/day-craft/motor-launches ) lots of character. Although a bit of a trek from Horning it's well worth spending a day that side of the bridge Have a brilliant trip though
  10. Here here Grace, I highly believe that the movement to larger boats is slowly killing the broads off. We always used to hire the smallest Alpha craft (wildcat) and when they pulled these from the fleet we was a bit stuck (We went to Marthams and then brought our first boat). Whilst I understand the logic behind having larger boats in the fleet I do think there's a market being missed where people just can't afford to hire the new bling boats .
  11. Our last 2 years of hireing was with Marthams.. The best memories too! Amazing boats Although the engine ran off oil and diesel in equal measurements lol
  12. I'm not sure I agree that's a wise choice. Although the BSC at times is downright stupid (as admitted by our marine surveyor) I'm sure it save's lives which has to be a good thing. Although yes I believe the BSC wouldn't have saved the lives from this incident (as the genset was in the engine room, CO alarms and ventilation are both recommendations), it may still have made the owners think and started a discussion which indirectly may have saved lives.
  13. Whoops... Well last weekend after poor Orca being left for 6 weeks with no hugs we got in at 9pm heating on full the webasto heater control flashed error codes on the controller (Need more juice scotty) . Grrr. Over to the other battery and it started up but didn't like it.. So chief engineer switched on thumper (although don't forget Orca's exhaust system is 90% silencers.. We got three of them... ebay special! ), to help recharge and was left running for an hour . Chief engineer said it was either that or no go next time.. I mentioned do we need solar panels then? He said "No we just need to use the boat more"... fair answer (Although I think we probably need to add another battery too.. certainly in the winter when the heater needs to be run!).. I now get why engines sometime need to be run more.. certainly in the winter. Interesting valid points.. Certainly sounds like there's lots of reliance on batteries and some batteries may not be maintained as well as they should.
  14. Thanks Chaps. Yeah ideally the southern part of england . Before I looked as far as the US as there are lots of lovely boats over there for half the price of here (even with import tax paid). However sadly we aren't going to have the time to look too far away and I think we will need to complete in a couple of weeks it's far from ideal. Also it's at least 3 visits so anywhere too far makes it tough; 1 for us to initially view. (second look if applicable), send the surveyor over (of which I need to attend), 3rd to collect. (Neglecting any work need doing to it).. Gulp writing that shows hard painful this going to get!
  15. Ok now for me Does anyone have or know of a Broom 37 (ideally a Crown) or a Princess 41 (Any variant) or equivalent. Must be GRP. Late 70's onwards (to 90's) considered. Ideally not a project but will consider all options. (we are aware of Broom's, Liz, automony and avanti, plus the princess 41 at maldon and horning). Please feel free to PM me.
  16. Thanks all for this. One has been found and sale agreed (sts).
  17. from me too! I hope you find a boat one day soon!
  18. This is who we used... http://www.martrim.co.uk/catalogue/ribbed-lining-carpet.html £8.40 for 1 meter x 2 meters.
  19. Good point, although downloadable copies are freely available online. These are clean and nicely binded though so I couldn't dispose of them really. A manual section on here would be good, although there are many units but we could start with the popular broads engines. I'll try and find the time to get something sorted soon. These have been taken and will go in the post tomorrow
  20. Just tidying up and I've found 2 outdrive manuals. They are reproductions but all nicely binded together, be a shame to bin them. Enfield Z drive Perkins z-drive. If anyone want's them, PM me your address and I'll stick them in the post.
  21. It really is just that!! 3 hours on a tuesday afternoon in a town hall in the middle of nowhere!! (http://www.broads-authority.gov.uk/broads-authority/how-we-work/transparency/consultations)
  22. We would never use them JA. Ask Robin (LR) why... ("What's that burning smell") but you know how fussy I am with electrical bits ...
  23. This kentish, ex-londoner, working in sussex (spending far too much time in norfolk).. was fine...
