  1. Here's some documents of Orca's renaming, which was completed by the commodore of our yacht club last feb. Just like BA we had about 50 people turn up and it was fun. Obviously you could just remove names, put new stickers on.. tell your insurance and the BA etc but I feel better doing it "properly".. (Sadly it didn't quite help keep bad luck away but evenso still better to do). 2. Good to see Vaughan back . I'm not sure if you are interested but here on the medway there are still some MTB's and patrol vessels used as houseboats, sadly we just lost the tidiest of them and she was broken but there's a couple still surviving.
  3. Hi Grendal. If you followed my thread you will know that Orca was purchased for £1 here in Kent. We do have a lot of DIY yards where sadly people give up and thus the mooring charges become a pain. Obviously such boats are a mess and require serious amounts of time and money. Once again if you look at our thread you will have seen just the amount of work that went in it was far from a free boat and the money we have spent was probably on par with a running boat from a broker. I wouldn't recommend you touching some unless you have deep pockets and lots of spare time. Also you need to experienced in restoring boats as you will need to give the hull a good looking over before taking the plunge. Also don't forget that it's almost imposible to dispose of glass fibre so if you get a dodgy one you are stuck. I'll PM you details of the yards I know, I don't want to post publicly as it's not fair for the owners there just in case they get curious visitors, also the "sale" could be private so just knowing the boatyard may not be helpful, although it's worth asking "Have you or do you know of cheap boats" but evenso I still recommend you go into this really wanting a boat. Good luck if you do one please do a restoration thread and enjoy the ride!
  4. I think you will need to talk to the humans JA, before you offer your soul to hirers!... One day it will happen.. People will shun the 70's tupperware for proper timber boats and a traditional timber fleet will be amazing. I need to win the lottery....
  5. Found some time to watch. That's amazing (Thank you again Carol for preserving and sharing these, you deserve an MBE!). You guys (Those that have) are so lucky to have seen all timber boats on the broads. I only started in 1999 so missed them. Those woodies are just gorgeous, imho it shows how lazy modern hireboat companies are. My dream is to bring back a small classic timber hirefleet.. One day it will go full circle.. (No JA! I'm dreaming).
  6. from me too. I think I've seen you about but not sure we moor at Stalham so I'm sure will see you soon. Grab an NBN burgee from our shop (http://shop.norfolkbroadsnetwork.com/) they not only help everyone spot you but also are really good for tackling the winds! Also check out our facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/norfolkbroadsnetwork/
  7. Surely with the increasing popularity of multifuel stoves the BA could make a fortune selling off peat..We have loads more broads. Imagine that.. hmmm.. (Can they also dredge a new channel from Sutton to Hickling.. that would be nice.. (and then a new one from Wroxham to Norwich that will be good)..
  8. I'm sold on them. We looked very closely at a few for a number of boats. I'd do one the only things that put me off was the alternators on the small ones look cheap bespoke ones but we didn't get any further (Probably just make sure you can get a local alternative from a motor factor).
  9. Looks good Robin.. It's nuts how China rips of everything though, they look identical to webastos! Just a word of warning, I suspect these aren't Marine grade; When I brought our Webasto unit I was tempted to buy a lorry version but Tom at JPC Direct mentioned these aren't Marine grade, i.e Something to do with the exhaust not venting outside for lorries (as they don't need to because they aren't in the cabin space, unlike boats. (and your insurance is invalid if you use them - He's a good salesman!). Just be careful. Saying that I bet China has a marine version (Not quite sure I'd have the guts to try it though!)
  10. www.marine-tech.co.uk forgot about them..
  11. www.tnorrismarine.co.uk or I'd guess any Yamaha dealer, it won't be too hard to spec it though. I'd suggest you get these companies to advise the size and then go to the boat jumbles to buy. Good luck.
  12. Three days later I had a reply back from North Norfolk council. My message has been passed onto the environmental department. I'll reply advise as soon as I hear .. I can't wait to hear their reply. I suspect it will be.. "Sorry it's the marinas problem, go away"...
  13. We are still playing with our lines. Thankfully we have plenty of space but the berths not square so when it blows the swimdecks damaging itself so all lines are tight to compensate. It's a tad annoying. We need to get a load of tires still which should help us fender off then start to loosen things up but it shouldn't really get too wet up there.
  14. I must admit Mark I'm a bit uneasy about being moored to a fixed pontoon but we are reassured it never floods that far inland. But never say never...
  15. I was always believed that a marina is actually responsible for checking on ropes? is that not the case? During the storm surge the other year our marina here did just that.. Although being barges I think they were more worried about the boats wreaking the pontoons.
  16. I thought they serviced it on site.. Must need to come out. There are roads signs saying it's closed Alan so guess it's planned servicing. Bet Reedham looks a bit different with no ferry though!
  17. Well done lifeboats crews bloody cold weekend too. No lecture from me can happen to anyone. Stop worrying Steve I'll have HembyPie's number on speed dial!
  18. Bobdog. Fair point but you shouldn't have to take it home in an ideal world. Your boat is separate from your place of residence and thus services should be separate. If like me you are not local and those who travel from overseas they can't always take it home. I see a charge applied in addition to ones tolls. Simple. Marshman. It ends were it needs to end. What's everyone else's solution heads in the sand and ignore it? Councils do a u turn. Lol as if!
  19. I'm sorry but the solution is simple. As Dave has pointed out the law is the law there's no point in arguing over it... Solution: BA need to provide services and charge a fee (I would prefer to it separate to my tolls fee - "waste collection fee") to cover the cost to them (to BA at cost though don't make a profit from it please). Hirer fleet I guess should pass this on separate. Why the BA because they are in the position to charge the users. (Sue the locals taking advantage). We don't want to pay more but tough the EU are making us so we have to. I'd rather pay a few quid more than see rubbish and dead affected wildlife floating down the rivers. So come on BA sort it out.
  20. Sadly sounds like nothing changes then. Rip London boatshow... Disgusting attitude from broom. We had good experiences with the brokers at broom direct so I would be very surprised if its the same people perhaps an external broker or a non salesman employee of broom getting a bit bored.
  21. I complained to NN council Email to ( yourviewscount@north-norfolk.gov.uk ).. I guess our boat is moored in their council.. We had to bring our rubbish home.. The compactor at ranworth is no more. Personally I don't think it's fair on my council to bring back rubbish.. Rubbish made in norfolk.. Norfolks problem. Perhaps we do need a complain but I feel lots of people moan on forums and facebook but don't moan any further so it won't be filled out. As Andy said eveyone needs to complain direct to the councils..
  22. Hi, Try this chap: http://www.bridgerubber.co.uk/ Good prices. Small family company, Sadly not a norfolk company but well worth a look at. They do hoses and seals too.
  23. Gracie have you heard the saying "Never trust a mechanics car" When pops gets home from work the last thing he wants to do is cook.. Sorry pops you have put me off roast dinners for life too! But yup I still call them up if I'm not sure but he did teach me the basics and I'm a pretty good cook. I'm not as fussy as them (Ma was a waitress) when they go to resturants.. they are both hard work.. proper critics lol.. So kinda means any pub they like has to be good.. I'd love to hear my folks favorites. I've not had dinner at the bridge but lunches are very very good (Being honest It's a bit pub grub for me). (I don't like pompus a'la cart food though but not a fan of pub grub needs to middle ground and these three do this very well) My favorites are Dukes - Somerleyton, White horse Loddon, One closer to the river at Colishall.
  24. If you are a city banker with a distant dream about boating in the calm waters off Monaco but have no idea about boats then you will love it. Especially if you love talking to clueless salesmen who are arrogant as hell! I wouldn't go even if the tickets were free. Bring back earls court!
