  1. I thought the latter two provisos were covered in the toll ie you have to have a BSS and you have to make a statement to the effect you are insured.
  2. well a quick search tells me that there is a high voltage supply to the pumping station and a transformer and that the supply also feeds the farm, however there are no details on loadings and capacity, which suggests there hasnt been a visit in a while. its quite funny that under the access details is the comment 'almost impossible !' its fed on a HV supply from the A47 near Brittania farm, over 2.5 miles away, and the cables run across the fields and have been repaired multiple times over the years. not the most secure of supplies. (I calculate nearly 600volts dropped on the 11000 Volt supply on the feeder cable alone- while this can be compensated for at the substation its pretty close to the limits that can be). Burgh Castle by comparison is much closer to civilisation electrically. Its only when you understand the issues involved in getting a supply to remote locations, that you truly realise why not all moorings have electricity points.
  3. It may well be connected to the adjacent pumping station, all I am saying is that the obvious point of connection may not in fact be suitable, you can only push a certain amount of electric through a wire before it overheats and melts, and this has to be looked at first.
  4. Using the supply to a pumping station may not be suitable, firstly it depends upon network capacity available at the supply point to the pumping station, then you have to look at the rated capacity of the cable, then there is the fact that a pump is what is called a disturbing load, on startup the pump may momentarily drop the supply voltage near the legal voltage limit, which may not allow for a charging point. this is the sort of thing the designers I work with are looking at day in day out, and is the biggest problem we face, also bear in mind that to lay a service cable can cost in excess of £40 per metre, by the time you have factored in the civils costs and costs for the cable.
  5. almost as bad as only allowing pretty boats to moor at Thorpe? if it floats its a boat, if its a boat it has to be tolled, of its tolled its fine. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, somebody loved it.
  6. I would imagine that too would be illegal, now just maybe one of my re-enactment bows with blunts, but that too would probably be illegal. Now I do know of a case where a drone was taken out by a spear, but then that must have been pilot error as he was way too close to a viking if that happened. this might work, i cant actually view the video from work.
  7. I have a ex work colleague who builds his own brand of valve amplifiers for bands.
  8. Watt, I hear resistance to the use of Amps, just you wait until I get Ohm, shocking isnt the word.
  9. also if you let off an air gun or shotgun and the shot goes outside the bounds of your property, that too is illegal, so shooting into the air is unwise as the shot would almost certainly exit the property.
  10. Quote above from a legal case in the channel islands - since a drone counts as an unmanned aircraft (according to the CAA)it is illegal to shoot at it, drones are restricted where they can fly (not over or within 50m of a person or vehicle not controlled by the pilot). if the drone is overflying your property lower than 50m, your only recourse is to report it to the police.
  11. ooh you naughty lot, thats it, moderator action, you will all be reported to the fat man with a beard (no not me) and that will be no presents time, just a lump of coal when the seasonal time approaches. on the naughty list it is. instead all your gifts will be given to the moderators for putting up with such naughtyness.
  12. maybe a bit too political even as a joke in the current climate.
  13. so on the left is the pva, on the right, epoxy, today after allowing all to dry overnight it was time for the varnish test, 25% varnish 75% turps, over both areas, lets see how that goes.
  14. Well Dennis, there is a wealth of information in the handy information link at the top of the page. if you are hiring you usually get a handbook with the boat, I will leave it to others to recommend publications.
  15. Timbo, you need to hang a card round your neck 'I Aintn't Dead'
  16. well the varnish option didnt work, so today we are testing pva glue and clear two part epoxy.
  17. I used to own a car AND 198Y, lost the number plate when I had an accident and it was scrapped, the road tax ran out, and I was told it needed to be taxed to exchange the number, as it was missing an entire corner the mot was impossible so no tax, no transfer.
  18. having hired Jayne from martham boats for the may meet, I am hoping to be able to cruise that section on the Monday, prior to returning the boat on Tuesday morning
  19. Me too, I get through about one every 3 or 4 days just driving to work (8-9 hour books), the next book is book 34 of the Terry pratchett discworld series (Thud), two free books a month on my audible package, then the opportunity to get 3 extra credits at a discount later in the month.
  20. I would think there are plusses and minuses, in the car the travel times between pubs are quicker - but on the flip side he has to drink soft drinks.

    Pilot

I was under the impression that if a private boat asked the pilots when they were not busy, that the pilot would ride through with the owner at the helm, while giving advice.
  22. well at least we know that everyone who needs to know is aware and will be discussing it, I think that was one of our primary concerns that it did not appear to have been discussed by the relevant departments in the Authority.
