  1. ah they career from one crisis to another?
  2. I read the first post and also thought a kilt would be the solution - then a nagging thought reminded me of Kenny Everett - all in the best possible taste, and I thought maybe not. Grendel
  3. The big trouble is that in the past he has been allowed to get away with it, as had other presenters - other things, and now while the reaction may be a bit over the top - the BBC have to appear squeaky clean, while I like the program I have always felt that JC was a bit of an a**e. I feel if he has broken the rules, he should pay for it. Grendel
  4. if it did come on the broads, it would probably cut the corner, hit the yellow post then turn turtle and sink.
  5. Trolls - that explains why the bridges are all so difficult to get under.... Grendel
  6. you just need to move the mudweight from the stern to the foredeck, and then she should float level. Grendel
  7. I imagine the problem would be keeping to the speed limits.
  8. I wonder if the water levels were allowed to drop to prevent flying boats landing on the broad. or maybe it was just a very dry summer? Grendel
  9. must have been easy to get under the bridges in 1946 looking at that water level. Grendel
  10. what shape is the isand, bear in mind that for medieval knights a heater was a type of small shield, maybe the island has that shape? and why not mermaids and dragons Tim? Grendel
  11. Timbo, the beauty of maps is that all those blank spaces can be filled with odd little pictures, such as here there be dragons, or mermaids, or anything else you desire from your map, at work I have to be a little obsessive with the maps I use and ensure they are set with north straight up (not even 1 degree off alignment) but then as I am generally doing a legal plan for a cable easement, if the land registry cant overlay it over their plans and get a good degree of correlation, then it get rejected. otherwise like you I prefer a map at a pleasing overall appearance, not top heavy in one direction or another. (and the more dragons and mermaids the better) Grendel
  12. With reference to the opening of cans, I have seen a good video which shows the opening of cans very easily with no tools other that the availability of a flat piece of concrete, just rub the top of the can (where the seal is rolled over) on the concrete hard for a few seconds, this wears away the can at the seal, then squeeze the can and it will open (you should see the layers of the seal after you have rubbed for a few seconds) Grendel
  13. Ok this is only just started really, what will I do with it - well apart from not building 27 foot of jibs and booms not sure, the fun is in the building. the plan I am working to is underneath the model so far Grendel
  14. my winter pastime has been meccano, I am slowly rebuilding the set I had as a kid, my current build is a Demag TC1200 crane - the chassis is nearly 3 foot long, and I had thought it would be about 6 foot high - until I got a copy of the specifications and found it could go as high as 500 foot - in scale terms that is approximately 27 foot high. I am at work at the moment so no access to my current state of build pictures, but so far I have completed the Jacking legs, and they span over a 2 foot square. Grendel
  15. I have one just like that..................................... (the 2 foot rule - that is) Grendel
  16. while for some people Friday 13th is unlucky, for others it is lucky, usually those that have terrible luck the rest of the time - I mean if someone is unlucky and drops £1 someone has to be lucky and find it. Griff, I am presuming a GHD is a Girly Hair Dryer? Grendel
  17. the halo is caused by refraction, through ice crystals in the clouds, we too saw the halo in Canterbury, one of my fellow astronomers got a nice shot of it that was shown on our local news last night. Grendel
  18. and yes I too am waiting for us to find evidence of aliens.
  19. all of the strange things I have seen in the sky have had logical explanations, from groups of 3 lights in a triangle formations (a trio of satellites) to strange lights (spaceships venting fuel tanks) to other strange lights (russian space launches) I have seen a variety, but if you know what junk is up there you wouldnt be surprised- map of space junk orbiting earth - http://www.reddit.com/r/MapPorn/comments/1eeswi/map_of_every_known_piece_of_space_debris_orbiting/ Grendel
  20. for me eggy bread uses at least one egg per slice, its just break egg onto lipped plate (to stop it running off) beat lightly with a fork to just sort of break the yolk, season with salt and pepper, dip thick slice of bread into mix (sometimes if I am doing a batch for the family I start with 2 eggs) allow t soak for a bit, flip the slice over and soak the other side - I might resoak the first side again after, then into the frying pan - while breaking another egg onto the plate, beat and season and then start the next slice soaking, turn the one in the frying pan to do t'other side, and then repeat, occasionally adding 2 eggs when the plate gets too dry. the last slice (mine) gets any leftover egg poured over it in the pan. then generally after eating I have to come back and do another 2 slices each for everyone. Grendel
  21. pictures taken at Hardley Cross. no special equipment, just a camera on a tripod. Grendel
  22. Here I am, I was where all good astronomers are on a cold winters night, when the skies are cloudy - Bed. Some of the best skies I have ever seen were on my holiday on the Broads, we moored up one night at Hardley Cross and I got my trusty travel scope (50mm f12 refractor) out and set it up on the bank and spent a glorious hour there just enjoying the peace and the stars. I have a whole host of telescopes ranging in sizes, but my favorites are my 1970's japanese built refractors, my two most favorite are the 76x1250 and the 80x1200 refractors. I do have a home made 4.5" reflector, plus a 127mm skywatcher, and somewhere is a 12" mirror and parts awaiting a new tube. Any astronomical questions you want answered I can usually help with (especially equipment related - my wifes great uncle was a engineering technician at hurstmonceux observatory and I have his photo collection). 23. I used to be blonde, but now count as a Bald old Git, so at least I have got away from the being blonde Grendel
