  1. I have been grateful to accept a tow though a dead spot upriver, trying to get back to Hickling one evening in a dinghy. Just a couple of hundred yards, but it made all the difference - I'd been there about an hour and got nowhere ! There were two river cruisers went by a few minutes apart. I stubbonly declined the first ones offer, then wised up and accepted the second.
  2. Sadly this is now reported as a fatal and the lady didn't make it.
  3. Hmmm....... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Gate-Fence-Shed-Trip-Line-Alarm-Mine-Blank-Firer-/391115456079?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item5b104c3e4f
  4. Just a thought - was the bridge built after the Thurne no longer had an outfall at Horsey or before ? I understand there was still water flowing that way into Medieval times.
  5. How do you modify / lift a scheduled or listed bridge such as this ? Only way to open the upper Thurne to larger boats is either to build a passing loop / new bridge or incorporate some kind of lock into the central span and extending either side to lower a boat under the bridge ( this could be effectivly a self contained 'container' and needn't touch or damage the bridge - it'd be ugly though ) Anyway - I like the fact the upper Thurne is quieter.........
  6. See from the EDP there's a 6 metre boat with 2 POB missing last night off Cromer having put out a Mayday. http://www.edp24.co.uk/news/boat_with_two_people_aboard_missing_off_the_norfolk_coast_near_cromer_1_3951398 The name / size does have a match with a Broads cuiser. Fingers crossed for a safe outcome ( or it being a hoax )

    Snow

ARRRRGHHHH !!!!!!!!!! Right - having said that, it took me nearly an hour to get from Barton to Caister / work today People who either do not know how to drive on a light dusting of snow, do not have the confidence to drive on a light dusting of snow, or have not taken steps to fit winter tyres to their car, STAY INDOORS 30 to 40 car tailback behind a little Fiat or somesuch.
  8. Had a blocked drain in the cockpit, so looks like rain water has gone over the top of the lockers and then tracked down to under the cabin sole. Need a very thin syphon tube to slip down through one of the keel bolt cutouts between the sole and hull ........... done it before using a model aircraft fuel pump.
  9. I suffered a similar sort of damage a few years back. On mine the hull and topsides meet at a flanged joint, and it's glued / glassed together with the rubbing strake over the top. I had about a metre damaged and had to carry out quite extensive GRP repairs.
  10. Will it affect anyone, except Norwich Sea Scouts if they ever want a new boat ? http://www.edp24.co.uk/news/politics/historic_trowse_swing_bridge_could_be_replaced_to_unblock_rail_link_1_3835341
  11. You'd need different catergories of training / test - one size won't fit all. Total sail, auxillary yacht, power........
  12. The motorway round Dublin is a similar system. They have ANPR cameras, get the reg, you call in with credit / debit card and pay it Simples
  13. Belaugh and Coltishall somewhere around Red / Yellow ? I'd put Horning well above Wroxham ......... Thorpe as a Green ?
  14. A lot of sailing clubs make extensive use of PMR's for rescue boat cover. At Hickling we can normally communicate with the club-house even when we are some distance down the river to Potter
  15. Eh ? What do you base that on ? I could possibly concede Paddy's Lane to Pennygate, but Barton Turf Staithe not existing ..... That's new to me, the Barton Turf History Project ( http://www.barton-turf.co.uk/staithes.html ) and probably most of the village.
  16. ....and as I have said, as one who lives there, almost every day in the summer we have visitors walking down to Neatishead. I've even been known to offer a lift if passing. There will be a small but significant percentage of users of both shop and pub who tie up in Barton Turf and walk down. It's 1.5 miles / about 20 minutes.
  17. As I put on the petition, these moorings are constant use during the season, and not just for the village. Many a tourist I have directed down to Neatishead for the pub / shop. I'm sure these would suffer some financial impact if the moorings were lost, with the resultant knock on to us who live there Besides, I love chatting to visitors
  18. I'll speak to the Parish Council too - not sure if it's anything to do with the village, but............
  19. I went from a Mercury 2 stroke to a Honda 4 stroke ( and from 4 to 6 hp ) Smoother, quieter - but a darn sight heavier to take on and off
  20. Dropping the mast is no problem when motoring - takes about five minutes. Just need to get the courage to go for it
  21. I haven't ventured South, and am pretty aprehensive of so doing. Under power I made 3.8mph on Barton according to my GPS How strong are those tides again............. Oh - and just realised afer much lurking ( and inhabiting elsewhere ) this is my first post here !
