  1. One of my favourite stories. I was sailing the dinghy one day, racing, on Hickling. I needed to put in a tack and there was a day boat crewed by an oriental group right where I wanted to go ( I was well over coming up to where the yachts moor, and they were well out the channel ) I hailed them several times, saying I was about to tack and to stand clear, finally stating " I'm a sailing boat, you should give way" The answer, forever remembered...... " me ruddy motorboat - you give way ! "
  2. Motor onto broad, solo sailing, fenders down. Drop mudweight, set the sails, lift the outboard, and bring fenders inboard before lifting the weight and sailing off. End of sailing reverse procedure, perhaps kicking one set off as I walk forward to deploy the mudweight. Motoring up river ? Well I'm not going to be stationary to bring them in, so they stay down
  3. There's a thread running on this on another forum ( for the Practical types - hint ) and the consensus there is it tends to fade and doesn't like abrasion.
  4. You do feel like you live in the human zoo in the summer, when the tourists get off their boats for a walk round
  5. Yep - this weekend going down the A12 in a temp speed restricted zone I had an HGV tailgating and flashing me when I was already at or marginally over the limit AND holding steady with traffic in the outside lane.
  6. The blue external lighting is a bit loud though !
  7. Browsing the website Britain from Above, there are some fascinating old images. Looking at this image from 1932 https://britainfromabove.org.uk/en/image/EPW039221 there is a schooner moored opposite what is now the yacht station in Norwich Any ideas - Cadet vessel ? You may need to register to zoom / go full screen. Image not directly posted due to copyright fears
  8. Thanks Grendel - Yarmouth had stock
  9. If any of you are moored in Barton Broad area this week there is a Poppy Trail around the parish with boards outside the homes of those who fell in WW1
  10. Why are the council not claiming from the insurance of those who have damaged the 'roadside furniture' - I had Suffolk do that to me back in the 80's when I had an accident
  11. Yep - had an incorrect item of clothing delivered. I returned it in a jiffy bag for exchange, and they charged me twice what I paid in postage to send me the replacement back in the same, reused bag !
  12. Hello - where are you keeping her ?
  13. Where you gone ? Just popped down to say hi and the place is half empty
  14. Mine has scrapes in the enamel - remember to tape sail toggles before washing your sails in the bath, unless you really want to upset your other half.
  15. Now what have they done ? Put some little dashed lane guide lines down - OK, good, but made the exits one lane instead of two into one ( Wroxham / Norwich bound ) bad idea.
  16. My concern if fisherman were asked to pay a 'toll' is they may well then think they had as much entitlement to be on the mooring as a boat wishing to moor.
  17. I have - hence the line about dimensional inability to stay in lane
  18. The biggest problem with the roundabouts is the inability, whether mentally or dimensionally, of drivers to stay in lane whilst going round and exiting them Secondary issues I'd say are approach speeds and failure to give way to vehicles already on the roundabout and indicating correctly ( me ! - not been hit yet but I'd say it's only a matter of time, as I use the road several times a day )
  19. Now you mention it... chap with the greyhound ? Not seen him either this year. Very polite, quietly spoken. Ex RAF like me !
  20. Interestingly, since they did the work on the airport roundabout I've yet to see a car off there - and it was almost daily. Article in the EDP on one driver who got it wrong on another NDR roundabout recently http://www.edp24.co.uk/news/driver-calling-for-better-lighting-on-ndr-after-crashing-on-roundabout-1-5643471 some sympathy, but I was always taught to only drive as fast as you can see to stop - be that rain, fog or darkness....
  21. As I drove over Acle bridge with my daughter last week I commented that we'd already have a few fall in, and if we had a hot school holiday period it'd only be a matter of time before the first fatality. Seems some people want to go out of their way to make it a reality
  22. Interesting - they are putting cones out this morning on the Petans car-park roundabout ( behind the airport ) taking it down to one inside lane each way. Roundabout improvement work ?
