  1. Steady on a bit chaps! I quite like Robins debates and without a bit of technology I wouldn't get to enjoy the 'Captains Blog' films. Its far better that we are able to discuss this sort of thing here and use our shared views to hopefully shape any such new technology before it arrives, as arrive it will. Whilst I am very happy to stick my bow in the reeds and pretend its not happening I am also painfully aware that the next generation seem unable to even tie their shoelaces without an 'app'! And, as we age, it is them that will bring the technology that is so normal and integral to their existence along to the broads with them!
  2. Ironically we are all using the exact medium we are so against just to have this discussion! However, I am very much in favour of anything that puts bums on seats, so to speak. The broads are desperate for new revenue and we are all up in arms when pubs close through lack of income. I would not necessarily want such technology aboard but if it helps the boating community in general then bring it on. Of course I am hypocrite, I am in love with the new all singing heating controller that comes with my new webasto and would never want to see a gas panel heater aboard again, ever! Edited because I pressed the wrong button.
  3. I think I am with the majority on this. I would love to take the broads back 25 years rather than forward 10! Just one thing though. Someone mentioned a virtual experience, if we get that far can we set it in the 50's? Oh to be able to moor and watch the wherry races, to stop at the Beehive for ice cream, to overnight at Yarmouth three abreast amid a sea of varnish, watch the new star class fleet being built in Wroxham... A time before the elf 'n safety ruled the roost and, of course, a total lack of No Mooring signs across the net work! Be warned though.... you might come across the pesky mod in shorts
  4. Today I have mostly..... been watching my new cooker arrive along with an assortment of bags and boxes containing all sorts of galley parts, fixtures and fittings. And then I got to watch them scratch their heads, search frantically and finally realise my new sink was not amongst the pile of new shiny bits now in my barn but 60 miles away where they left it behind! And so todays galley layout planning and positioning has been posponed till the weekend. They really do need to get their acts together you know. We launch in what... six months? There is supposed to be bacon sandwiches at the launch... at this rate McDonalds will be cooking them
  5. Not sure if there was an iron topsail to blame here but an excellent recovery in the end https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ytwSGiJEe1Y
  6. Its past midnight so NOW can we talk about Christmas? and Christmas Chocolate.... yum!
  7. Don't forget the prop before you launch old chap....
  8. Can I take this opportunity to wish Iain a very merry Christmas and all the bah humbug s he can eat!
  9. Its no good Doug, you'll have to bring her to Beccles. How could you not? We are hoping to have 'Faymore' there as well in 2016
  10. Well its blowing an absolute hoolie here. The wind has blown spray through the open doors and halfway up the barn this afternoon so, now everything is wet, they have made a dash for home! What I wanted to say was good luck to my fellow vessels during this stormy spell. I hope your ropes stay tight and your quayheading remains intact. And a stay safe to your crews.
  11. Can we have something more like... Go for it, you have this much gap Dont even think about it You made it! The height gauge says what? Oops
  12. Yachting on the Yare for Youngsters and the Young at Heart
  13. Oh I get U do I? The Umpteenth Book of Underwater U Turns ok I know...
  14. I'm not so sure about this one. You see, there are those who own their boats and are very experienced at handling them. Then there are those that hire. Being a hirer with experience means approving nods when you get it right and a get out of jail free card when you get it wrong. And then there are my lot.... its like being helmed by the chuckle brothers! I'm not sure I am quite ready to become a star on youtube just yet. As a positive though, you lot will all be sat at home watching the motley crew trying to steer me which means lots of empty moorings.. On second thoughts I like this camera idea - go for it!!!
  15. I can do J.. Janet Anne's Jumble of Woodworking Joints hehe
  16. He may still be on his summer berth at NBYC?
  17. and you think you have got problems... This is 25kgs of trouble. it sleeps where it wants, no arguments. You cant wrestle the duvet because once he is on you are so pinned down you cant move let alone retaliate.
  18. Agreed. I am sure that the lower bure does not flow like it used to. Whether that is due to a lack of dredging, the current across its mouth from the southern rivers or just the rose tinted glasses used by some skippers (wink) I have no idea but something we have noticed is that anyone renewing quayheading or jetties etc 'up north' are automatically raising them by 6 to 12 inches. The southern moorings seem to be staying about the same...
  19. If the block is out of Particia I'd be happy to get my humans to collect it and have it assessed by 'our' chap. They are up at the marina next week...
  20. Is having your original block repaired really not an option. I would be very surprised if it can not be done no matter how badly cracked. We have had four very old blocks repaired locally over the time and three were 100% successful. the fourth had to be done a second time which was annoying but it was done and thats my point.
  21. And me! I fit too. Sorry about the photo, its from the day they bought me. It was the end of the 70's when hire boats that would not go under Potter, Beccles and Wroxham bridges became acceptable. The quest for 'private look' hire boats plus the need for new look fleets with more and more kit aboard meant upwards as well as longer and wider. Now, some 35 years later, we can see most of the current new builds are moving back to full access of the network, something I think is excellent news.
  22. I hope you'll be bringing her to Beccles next August old chap?
