All boats competing, craft in Any sailing race, in any Club Belonging to the Royal Yachting Association (HSC Does) are required to have third party insurance. It is a requirement written into the 3 Rivers Race rules. Sailing racing insurance is remarkably cheap, quotes taken from Newton-Crum not the cheapest company but one of the most used. Third party(£5,000,000 coverage including all racing risks A topper dinghy £20 A kestrel dinghy £40 yes A broads cruiser will be more, but not extortionately so.. if you can afford the boat you can afford the insurance..

I agree with the above comments of the cricket and the Cycling. Over the weekend I drove to Scotland and Back.. 18.5 hours driving in 27 hours... on the way back it rained, starting this side of Beattock summit, and continued all the way through to Newark. Just north of Donny, the rain was so heavy on the A1M, I was down to 40MPH, and considering slowing, in the left hand lane with Nothing overtaking me. Now that's a British Summer... Forecast for the next fortnight sunshine and showers, time to get the waterproofs ready for regatta week...

Here's my comments, 1, There are idiots on both sides. 2, Even in a sailing regatta, all the sailing boats going through don't belong to the regatta. 3, As with the motorboats, Not all the sailing boats are crewed by local people with local knowledge of the rules or are used to sailing with anything other than competitors on their stretch of water and if they've only sailed out on a huge lake or the Sea they really are struggling... 4, When sailing on the helm or as crew, if the wind is too strong, you have no spare hands to direct or to wave back. 5, When sailing all day you really can get really P*****d off with every motorboat expecting you to wave back.. 6, I often see motor boats over reacting to a sailing boat approaching, that is the Motorboat is expecting the sailor to turn away 10 ft away, the sailing boat is expecting to turn 10 inches away... 7, I also have a motor boat and have never had a problem going, through others sailing on their own or another regatta. But this is because having sailed for many years, I can often see what they are going to do next, long before they decide to do it.. it's a matter of experience..

The Coltishall road NDR roundabout, is..... A roundabout, you now pass through both sides, the lanes aren't marked yet and there are plenty of cones still around. The Island needs Landscaping, and the signs are not yet up.

I view of another thread (i'm only just catching up I've spent many hours on motorways over the last few days) Here, bumped back to the top, is the Advice given for Motor boats trying to get through the Horning Regatta which starts Saturday!!!! Oh it's Wroxham week this week, they request you keep to the edges if they are out racing. but be prepared to stop if a vast hoard starts charging down their start line towards you as you cross it.

One of the things that I find amusing is everyone (not just here on this site) attacking Chris Evans but not Gary Linaker, who per hour is earning a lot more than CE.

I'd agree with this, tourists are generally limited by the hire boat to a couple of miles an hour over the limit. It takes a Private owner to be planeing down the river ( I have seen on the Woodcutters Straight up to Dydlers mill) OR because they have a huge ocean going boat rumbling along on tick over, are unable to keep below the limit, and when they open the throttle slightly to move forward a little faster they leave a hole in the water...

You are paying a lot more than that for all the presenters on ITV and Sky, just indirectly through every thing that is advertised on TV.

As for the bats with the speed limits on them I have seen them in use, as it's very difficult to shout to ask people to slow down past, for instance, the beginners sailing.. PS I have a megaphone, your voice gets very sore after a week shouting at tourists, over reving engines to ask them to slow down, as they approach the regatta. Trouble is I keep forgetting to take it with me...

One of the boat companies interviewed said they had fitted GPS to their boats (I can't remember which). The sailing school at HSC takes children from the age of 8 upwards, but you need to ask about it the year before as they are very well booked up. IIRC Thursday evenings, with the odd event for them on a Saturday. it operates May to September -ish and because it's all run by volunteers not hugely expensive..

You are correct, all the clubs on the Broads combined in 1938 to form NBYC. Within a year almost all the clubs reformed at their original homes. It is something of a sore point NBYC kept all the trophies from the original clubs...

Just a little nudge to keep this in vision for anyone who's missed it. You can drop in (By land) to see what we do, from 31st July to 4th August, during our regatta week. We have our own car Park which is free but it will be crowded and our moorings even more crowded, hence no non competing visitors during racing time by boat please. You might find yourself ignored at first, as there are a lot of unknown faces arriving for the event, everyone will be sorting out their racing and officialdom will be very busy with the racing, if have any questions just ask someone. Then you will be made welcome. The tea bar will be open about 08:30 to 16:00, tea and coffee is an extortionate amount of about 60p a cup. Sometimes there is cake!!!

Oi We're not posh Like Wroxham, Horning is a Sailing club not a yacht club, we'll let in anyone (including me). One week to go and I get bacon Sarnies for a week, although I have to pay for them, I will get free tea and coffee as I'll be on Rescue boat duty.. Our bacon sarnies ( and tea and coffee) are vastly cheaper than Wroxham anyway, because we have no paid staff. The HSC regatta week from 31st July to the 4th August drop in to see what we do, we'll probably charge you 50 or 60p for a coffee though

I can confirm our entry fee is a huge £2, and the opening hours are 10:00 to 16:00. I think we will have 6 or 7 operating layouts, 3 of which are completed. Also there will be another 3 or 4 non operational layouts under construction / rebuild.

Just for added fun in this tourist season , if you cross the Horstead- Coltishall bridge heading north and turn right on the Hoveton -Wroxham road, there are traffic lights for water works holes in the road. The traffic is backing up on to the Bridge and the other way into the narrow bit on the Hoveton Road.

The tarmac on the Coltishall Rd Roundabout is almost complete, the tarmac stretches as far as the eye can see, towards the Wroxham road, though the Wroxham Rd Roundabout still has a long way to go before it's use.

Ok folks, Since I'm Busy reminding people about Horning Regatta Week I thought I'd also better remind you about this. Broadland Model Railway Club are holding their Open Day on Sunday 13th of August 2107 at: Stalham Town Hall, High Street Norwich Norfolk NR12 9AH We do have to have a small charge for entry to cover costs. There will be Club and Members layouts in a variety of Gauges, We hope to have a second hand Stock and Book stall, Tea and Coffee will be available, there is a pub across the road!!! Drop in if you're in the area, have a chat and see what we do. I'll update this with the entry charge (£2 last year) and opening hours once I've been to the club on Friday..

Yes, it's been running for at least 109 years. You Need Hitler or the Kaiser to stop it... It's been running since before there was a Horning Sailing club, there is video of a Horning regatta of 1908, and there is Photographs of racing there in 1895...

As it's coming up to that time again, that Time again I thought I had better put out our annual plea and warning of chaos, to those not involved. This is mostly a repeat of last years plea for those who have not experienced the Chaos..... I'll be motoring around the regatta as usual, trying to rescue boats (more often than not, non competitors). Anyway here we go HORNING SAILNG CLUB REGATTA 2017 We DO NOT wish to impede your enjoyment of the Broads, so here's a few clues as to what's going on and hopefully some helpful advice.. There will, if previous years are anything to go by, be up to 150 competitors, this could include up to 50 or 60 children, some of which are on their first regatta and will be in the smallest boats. Please do not, berate small children who get in the way, when we have asked you to stay close to the bank, many of the smaller children are beginners and may make mistakes at their first regatta. This years Regatta starts on Saturday 29th July 2017 which will be in the afternoon on Black Horse Broad, so there will be a fleet of boats sailing up there around 1 till 2PM and returning around 4pm depending on wind etc. On Sunday the 30st of July, we will sail up to the broad at around 9 till 10 AM returning for lunch about 12 and back to the broad before 2pm So if you are timid about being around sailing boats those are the times to avoid, you are welcome to come and watch the sailing on the Broad, we ASK that you keep to the edges as it's safer for you not to have up to 100 boats sailing all around you!. And now the real Chaos, From Monday the 31st of July until and including Friday the 4th of August, we will be sailing from Horning Sailing Club up as far as Dydlers Mill for the majority of boats, but the big cruisers, will, if the wind is right, go as far as Woodcutters dyke.( the end of the long straight to the Mill) The First race starts at 09:30 at the club house and the last race each day will finish at anything up till 18:00. For the timid ones who wish to pass through with no sailing boats around, then you would need to go through outside of those hours, though there is a lull between 1 and 2 pm when the majority stop for lunch. That is the numbers will drop from around 100+ to about 20 boats. There about 5 or 6 Race starts at five minute intervals, if you see a large group of up to 20 boats milling around at the start line outside the club we ask that you hold on till it goes, and then slip through before the next start. Each race lasts about an hour so there are lulls in traffic ALL COMPETITORS ARE TOLD THAT IF A NON-COMPETITOR IS ON THE BANK, THEY ARE TO TREAT THAT BOAT AS THE BANK AND TURN WAY. Swearing by competitors to anyone is ungentlemanly / womanly conduct and will cause disqualification from that race. Now by being on the Bank We mean within 6ft of the Bank. Why 6ft? Well about that is about the width of most sailing boats and therefore you won't get sailing boats down both sides of you. We'd prefer it if you were a bit closer maybe 3 or 4ft of the bank as it makes it more definite there is not room between the bank and you. Please remember sailing craft have a 3ft keel hanging down below, and we sail within a few inches of the bank from the club to the Mill and it's rare there is a problem with draft. Now we are used to sailing on the broads, sailing within a couple of inches of each other is not unusual. So if a boat come what seems to be very close to you, DO NOT PANIC, DO NOT PUT YOURSELF IN THE BUSHES, They are sailing their pride and joy, that's their hard earned money, that is expensive to repair and they can't compete for the trophy if their boat is broken. Unless there is some mistake (very rare) you will not be hit, they can turn on a sixpence. This does not mean you may not have to slow down or stop, IF there is open water in front of you, they will use it.. It is a common mistake of those new to the broads, that they move in to the bank correctly when they see a sailing boat, which when it gets close they move in more, so the sailing boat uses more river, and repeat,,,,, Don't do it, once you are less than 6ft preferably 3 or 4ft from the bank that is all we ask. SO WE RESPECTFULLY ASK, that if you are going through the regatta, go slowly and keep to the bank, if there is a gap in front of you keep motoring slowly. If not please slow or stop till the obstruction has cleared, always pass behind sailing boat just after it has just tacked away from your bank. If they Are running away from you just follow until they turn at their next buoy, if they are running towards you, please slow and when they get to you they will move over, eventually (they can't go through you!). P Please enjoy your view of the chaos, it's all part of the broads Thank You for your Assistance.....

Saturday, went to Sutton gala, Went home laid 3/4 ton of concrete, suffered greatly in the heat, did not a lot else. Sunday, Did some heavy duty Pruning with a chainsaw, Went to Stalham car boot, picked up a couple of books by Keith Skipper and a copy of The Broads from the air by Mike page (it turned out to be signed by him). Left Keith Skippers book with Mother who was laughing greatly (though she struggles with the Norfolk, Mum speaks west country).. Took Ben the Border Collie for a long walk, some insect took a bite out my left hand which is annoying intensely at the moment. Had a bad nights sleep due to pea harvesting, and the heat. Now about to measure ACV to roughly 1 part in a million...
