  1. Hopefully a case of if, or when, the station building becomes unusable then finding an alternative location. Being next to the beach won’t be as important if there is no beach which undoubtably would mean few, if any visitors going for a paddle or swim. Not good news for Hemsby but as a tourist destination it still has plenty to offer.
  2. I’ll give 6 a try and see what number comes in. Yes, I was wondering about Southgate's, if not a Summer Breeze then one of the half deckers if they also carried the logo, Splash perhaps? Thanks for looking out the catalogues!
  3. Not daft at all, I did Google it with the Norwich area code and 78 tacked in front but nothing came up. It’s such a long time since the business wound up unfortunately but I did wonder if it might have been reincarnated at the David Wall premises. Still, that it was good enough to maybe grace the walls, or framing room, of a fine art dealer perhaps next to other noted Broadland artists such as Batchelder or Roland Green, without even so much as a signature, is warming to know. I wonder if I should remove the back and see if there’s a note inside…
  4. Continuing this fine thread, can anybody picture where from once it came? Pure guess on my part but was it what is now the classic car showroom on the opposite side of the road to Broads Tours? The art place now next door looks to be a refurb but I can’t recall if that was just part of the garage setup before they setup up in Hoveton?
  5. Toad Hall? If the one I’m thinking it was rebuilt circa 10 or more years ago, was a large wooden motor cruiser sunk next to it for a long time. To the righthand side of the Womack entrance from Thurne? Was the Ames bungalow at Acle situated at what is now the site of Northern Rivers SC perhaps?
  6. Thread drift? No way, it’s obviously blowing a hooley, the dinghy under tow looks to be almost on the plane! I think I’ve only ever managed to take a photo that captures the wind strength once and that was at the three rivers race that was blown out, 2002 or thereabouts.
  7. Great to get an alternative as I’m not 100% it’s Thurne, the stick looks too thick for a wherry mast and even a telegraph pole!
  8. That was quick Marshman, would be my guess too but I truthfully don’t know for certain. Any idea what that big stick could be in the distance?
  9. ... stitch up, well no not exactly perhaps, rather an intarsia challenge. No prizes, except maybe a bag of mixed wool and some needles from the local charity shop! Genuinely interested to know where forumites think this may have been, and a bonus ball for the name of who might have knitted it (no signature I’m athraid...).
  10. Apology Bern, on ferry duty, passenger running late and haven’t worked out how to link the chat room to my S.A.M. reverse speech synthesis talktype gubbins on hands free and hit return from the steering wheel, should make it next week. Have a good quiz!
  11. Haribo’s by any chance?
  12. I passed the Bure at both Aylsham and Burgh yesterday and observed that the flow was both quick and high. The fields in the vicinity are sodden and puddling as far as the eye can see from the roadside. There is a lot of surface water drainage demand from housing also so I suspect, whilst the new may be built on old fields, the floodwaters are contributed to by building over the uplands. Aside of the river by my calculations your next three visits to the Lion are destined to be weddings!
  13. Great photo, I love oil painting skies, didn’t get enough of those last year! Lovely part of the country and I hope the water drains away ASAP, pressure seems to be up and humidity down, fingers crossed for no more rain for a while.
  14. Is that about the same toll as Mutford lock? Think I’d stick a tall biminis on to get my moneys worth each time On second thoughts I suppose the bridge might break down albeit extremely rarely and not for very long...
  15. The Norfolkmills.co.uk website has some pics of Stokesby tower mill in 1938 and 52 and 79. Odd looking truncation topping design!
  16. That’s a good question about the path of the ‘Ant, I thought I may have the answer in the form of an old map of Norfolk but 450 years is going back two or three centuries too many I think... certainly has been a nice start to the yaer! Enjoy your new year cruise! [credit Christopher Saxton 1574]
  17. I knew of this yachts existence and its great to read of some of its history, must have been quite noticeable to anyone in the Essex area back in her halcyon days https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-norfolk-67479982 (credit bbc)
  18. With an armada like that you’re bound to forget some BrundallNavy! I note not too many Japanese in the mix so the indicator stalk has probably been on the same side most of the time which when you’re changing cars as often as it seems is handy. The Dolomite is a beauty which I think extolled the use of vinyl roofs so at least that part of the body shell could rust in peace lol! The VW Derby if I recall correctly was a 2 door with a boot that wasn’t made in Derby but the floorpan of which may have risen to become the polo breadvan? Whilst there was no competition intended I think you have earned the Turnoar prize for contributing the most to automobolia experience, I presume you haven’t owned as many boats as you have cars but if so I’ll start another thread for long listing...
  19. The basin where Allen’s was is still there with modern houses built behind facing onto it , 70s or 80s style, I’ve never been down the street and only viewed from the river entrance as you go past, off to the right of the sharp left bend when coming from Wroxham direction before you sweep round and up toward the common. Says Anchor Moorings on google maps. Lovely spot.
  20. I’d forgotten about LeGrice roses on the old Yarmouth road, a housing estate now. The Allen family were quite big too by all accounts, my grandmother was part of a large brood, not so sure they owned wherries as much as built and maintained but from relatively late, a John Allen seemed to have taken ownership of a boatyard in 1870 and I can only assume this later passed to Clifford Allen. It’s possible my great grandfather was Johns brother but I need to dig deeper and it may be he was a cousin, once or twice removed even! It is spooky, my great grandmother who married an Allen was a Lubbock of which there are dozens from Melton Constable to North Walsham and everywhere between, I probably walk past cousins in the street without even realising! That’s Norfolk for you.
  21. The navigation above Coltishall is documented as being somewhat tedious and from Buxton restricted to the smaller wherries and it was probably a single file affair akin to the North Walsham canal. The navigation was lost in 1912 but from my memory of a canoe trip up to Oxnead a few years ago it seemed wide enough to pass in places, it was winter though and wet!
  22. 12’6” might have been ok to Aylsham, I think the narrowest lock was 12’8 on that stretch. Fully laden 3’6” might have been drawn including a slipping keel but I should think the keel would have been removed up toward the head of navigation.
  23. Ironic indeed dom, Friday night quizzers will know I can spout the odd pun now and again unentintionally… in some ways there was no immediate demise of Duncan as the car man came to NW to assist his brother with the canning operation and that ended up outlasting NW’s brief foray into the auto industry by a long chalk, half a century or more. Enjoying following your research, it’s prompted me to pick up links I have to members of the Allen family in the area surrounding Coltishall and possibly the yard where wherry building took place in the late 1800’s. Seems Bunns and possibly press’s spawned from this neck of the Bure too.
  24. Morning Calm is another all varnished yacht probably on the racing scene around that time. Corsair too, clinker one though not the clipper class. Dusky Maid. All still going strong.
