MM, I walk past your boat every day. I'll let you know if it sinks.

How's that working out? Sent from my Nexus 9 using Tapatalk
  4. Wonder if Curry's tried to sell them an extended Warranty before they took delivery.
  5. Apparently, the Ministry of Defence has confirmed the Royal Navy's brand new £3 billion aircraft carrier, HMS Queen Elizabeth, has a leak #HeartNews. At least there's plenty of crew with their own tin cups.
  6. Aren't there rules about live-baiting?
  7. Got snow today? Sent from my Nexus 9 using Tapatalk
  8. Such a brilliant and informative topic - thank you. Recommend to anyone who hasn't read it yet. Sent from my Nexus 9 using Tapatalk
  9. Thanks, JohnK, I kinda thought that although I am not an engineer. I didn't expect TheQ's reply, though, although that does seem to make sense. Sent from my Nexus 9 using Tapatalk
  10. When a boat crosses an aquaduct does it increase the load on the bridge? Sent from my Nexus 9 using Tapatalk
  11. To be absolutely fair much of UK's wild uplands are shaped and maintained by grazing sheep, deer and cattle; the farmers, environmentalists and country sports aficionados are just as keen as we are to prevent their countryside reverting to the wild woodland, bramble, gorse and ferns of yesteryear.
  12. I have most of a bottle of 1970's vintage Brut if anyone would like it. Tried it once, and the dog wasn't too keen either.
  13. Sadly true. I believe the Mayor recently tried to introduce a jaywalking law but was unsuccessful. If you have ever tried to make your way along the pavement in Oxford Street at Christmas you would realise that if pedestrians were confined to pavements London would grind to a halt. The West End is one big pedestrianised area with permitted vehicles - but you get used to it.
  14. This is what happens when you get rid of PCSOs, lollipop ladies, and the Jolly Green Man, not to mention Mrs Baggett, Sid from the gas marketing board and Bernard Miles doing something with an egg. The world just goes to pot. Sent from my Nexus 9 using Tapatalk
  15. Two stone child runs into two ton car. Regardless of speed the car will win. The trick is to separate child traffic from car traffic at the school gate.
  16. Perhaps a buoyancy aid on the way there and a life jacket on the way back?
  17. To summarise then, if you are setting off for the pub you will need: Buoyancy aid Torch Length of cord with loop in end Folding ladder Jeans with velcro fastening Manual on Holger Nielson Method of resuscitation Throw line Length of yellow cable Have I missed anything? Nearly forgot - beer money!
  18. As a youngster I learned a technique for getting someone out of the water (although I have never tried it out of a pool). The idea is to use their natural buoyancy to propel them upwards onto the shore. Standing on the bank, take their two wrists and dunk the person into the water repeatedly in a sort of pendulum motion; their head may go under the water but they will eventually attain enough bobbing momentum to land them at least halfway onto the bank from whence you can roll them over fully. For a larger person perhaps it would take two people to lift them up, but a straight lift out of the water of someone who is unconscious or incapable is simply an impossibility. I wonder whether the RNLI or the RYA might have some training materials on river rescues which could be published online?

  20. Fred, Silver Cloud looks like a really nice boat and would be our first choice, except that pets are not accepted. I can appreciate that. Sent from my Nexus 9 using Tapatalk
  21. Thank you, Trevor & Deirdre (please give my regards to Bromley Common) and Fred, who may well have picked the direction of my thoughts. If anyone from Goosander would like to contact me I should be very pleased to chat.
  22. Hi, all. We are seriously thinking of joining a syndicate for a smaller boat, but am I right in thinking that shares can remain on the market for a considerable time?
  23. Human speech, the written word , television and computers are designed for the communication of ideas, facts, emotions and information. In order to communicate well, the means should be well structured, clear and incapable of misinterpretation. There is the old anecdote of the soldier sending back a message from the front line: "Send reinforcements, we are going to advance", which was passed from person to person until it reached HQ as "Send three and fourpence, we're going to a dance". In scientific papers, international relations and all stops between accuracy and conciseness of expression are of the utmost importance. I find it deeply saddening to see the art and skill of communication corrupted through laziness, poor teaching standards and foreign invasion, and propagated by the media.
  24. I too have provided a free 24hr technical service for all my family, friends, neighbours and "new best friends" for many years, including call-outs at unsociable hours. I have , however, now reached that time when my memory is conveniently declining at such a rate that a 12-year-old kid will outshine me pretty much every time.
