  1. I'm from Essex but only just, I was born/have lived with a few miles of the Suffolk border my whole life.... Sent from the Norfolk Broads Network mobile app
  2. Personally I have no issue with charges being made for moorings, it is the right of the leaseholder or land owner to do so. I dont generally use those moorings myself as I feel it adds cost to an already expensive pastime, but that is my choice. What I object to in this instance is the aesthetic of the thing and it just seems to be 'Bad Form' in my opinion. Just wanted to clarify as theres seems to be some stick grabbing confusion... 9. Presumeably the turbo wash would also clear out the rest of the intake system as well as once in the turbo inlet it will get blown through the combustion chamber as well. You can or certainly used to be able to buy products in aerosol cans to do similar things to cars too. Sent from the Norfolk Broads Network mobile app
  10. I am a vehicle technician and although not marine trained I should imagine the principals are the same in boat engines as cars. I agree with ChrisB in that the bores and piston rings etc have a harder time in a long stroke engine as they travel at higher speed and further than those in short stroke motors. I suspect the longevity of the older Gardner engines etc is down to their lower states of tune more than anything, unfortunatly it is a fact that high performance tends to come at the cost of longevity and/reliability. The next point I would make it that low hours/miles does not mean an engine is in better condition that one that has higher hours/miles, an engine that has sat with old oil(containing all sorts of acids, condensation and god knows what else in it can easily be in a worse state than one that has worked hard but had maintainence on shedule. This is particularly true of turbo chargers where the shaft bearings can dry right out then be spun up to many many thousands of rpm in an instant on an over enthusiastic start up(it doesnt have to be on boost either, the shaft spins as soon as exhaust gas hits it) Just something (else)to consider.... 11. I think it's the use of a machine to collect the charges that people are finding a little out of keeping with the broads(it is a little bit 'town centre'), rather than the fact there is a charge for mooring, although I am happy to be corrected on that. I do see why it would be desirable to have though, nobody has to cross the river to collect fees etc Sent from the Norfolk Broads Network mobile app
  12. My sister and brother inlaw bought a boat out of Cove Marina back in 2010, a Princess 33 called Affinity, if anyone remembers it? Sent from the Norfolk Broads Network mobile app
  13. Prior to my ownership my boat had never had a Bss cert issued as it had been out of commission since before it came in. I bought her and within a cpl of months she was out on the hard over winter then the following spring she went back in, still minus Bss. When I contacted the BA with regard to the toll I was told it was ok to keep her in the water in the yard but not to use her out on the river until Bss cert was issued and that he would make a note on the record to say as such. I have found the BA to have a pretty relaxed attitude to this sort of thing which I think is a good thing, keeps it friendly. Tbh both the Bss and Mot are pretty low standards in my opinion(and I am an Mot tester!) But they do provide a basic level of safety for those who arent technically minded enough to know the difference themselves. However a car or boat can easily be very dangerous even if it has literally just passed the respective tests. Good and regular maintainence by competant persons is what really matters! 14. Tv has its place, I like to watch something last thing before going to bed sometimes if I am on my own, but generally in the evenings I prefer to read or as you say Alan watch the river go by..... Sent from the Norfolk Broads Network mobile app

  17. The motor trade is rife with this sort of thing, I work for a well known German brand and the stuff people seem to think they shouldnt have to pay for is unreal at times not to mention things they have clearly broken/spilt something on, modified etc and feel that the Warranty should cover! The problem for us is the dreaded customer satisfaction surveys which mean we have to pander to the try it on brigade whilst genuine honest people who dont speak up get sidelined, I think its all very wrong these days and the sooner customer satisfaction surveys get binned off the better IMHO. Good customer service and good value should come as a result of good staff training and business ethics rather than forcing it via survey. Sent from the Norfolk Broads Network mobile app

  19. I have seen one or two hire boats with aerials on masts, one in particular I thought was going to be bannana'd by Wayford bridge but the helm spotted it just before I hooted to warn them. Getting the aerial up high does help a lot with reception, I use 4G nowadays but the same applies with the dongle. Sent from the Norfolk Broads Network mobile app
  20. Engines of both fuel types are much much more powerful nowadays(think 125ps from 1400cc petrol), this is due to developments in engine management, general efficiency improvements(breathing/lubrication etc)and pretty much universal use of turbochargers. The basic output of the engine has nothing to do with gear ratios although having more of them allows better use of what power/torque the engine does make.. 25. I havent yet done much in the way of winter cruising but I fully intend to afloat as much as possible this coming winter, so I guess I will be finding out the availability of provisions and such as I go. I did spend most Sundays at the start of this year on the boat doing work on her and the lovely crisp air and scenery just at Wayford really whet my appetite to go off down river:) Sent from the Norfolk Broads Network mobile app
