  1. Yeah, indeed. I like the principle of having an all-electric boat as getting rid of LPG is obviously desirable, particularly in hire. But the reality of it is that you just create a bigger problem in terms of the number of batteries and alternators needed and an absolute dependency on running the engine. When I was in a syndicate I got really fed up having to explain to other owners about the need to look after the domestic batteries, to always use shore power when they could and to make sure they did enough running each day. I think they thought I was being melodramatic, but nonetheless we were having to replace the numerous domestic batteries every year.
  2. No I don't have much trouble with it either. I have a Mac for work reasons, but Win 10 is generally fine for me. My main work laptop (Win10) is running like a dog at present but only because of all the security crap that my colleagues in infrastructure have put on it.
  3. If it's a link to a product that's helpful to people and isn't a product you're selling then that's totally fine.
  4. You do appear to have used the phrases 'computer magazine' and 'experts' in the same sentence and I don't believe it was ironic
  5. But then that's the problem is it not? How does the average user know what will and what will not be affected? When Catalina was released, lots of things did not work. Big Sur is a significant change and I'd expect more of the same.
  6. Actually a lot of developers use them now.... MacOS is kind of like what Linux would be like if it ever got finished.
  7. Hi there and welcome back Is this the thread you mean?
  8. I'd go for South Walsham. One of the most beautiful Broads to wake up on, in my opinion.....
  9. No, indeed. I was thinking generally, though.
  10. I believe government guidance is that businesses should pass on the VAT saving to customers if they can. 'Hoseasons' and 'good customer service' are not phrases I would ever find the need to use in the same sentence. I've been stung by them too often and just don't bother with them now.
  11. Sounds like a good plan. Garnet is one of those cases where the reason no-one had done a roof like that before is because it was a crap idea.
  12. It depends - Those times are purely a forecast and of course tides are governed by the moon as well as the wind and how much rainfall there has been. Sometimes, yes you'll have a lovely run through Yarmouth at low water but often it's a long hard slog against the tide until you're past Acle. As others have intimated, depending how much power the boat has (and what its hull speed is) at times you barely move on the narrow bit past the yacht station. I'd say that going North to South you can be a bit early, but South to North it is a lot easier at slack.
  13. Ah yeah, good point. I think Airport, Thickthorn, Harford and Sprowston are running, though. https://www.norwichparkandride.co.uk/ https://www.konectbus.co.uk/coronavirus/
  14. Hi The New Cut is definitely easier during slack, but I wouldn't say it's essential to go then. You'll use a bit more fuel and be steering more but it's a fairly short section so won't make a massive difference. I'd probably head for Loddon on the first night, but you could stick in the Brundall area and go for Coldham Hall or even Surlingham Ferry (it is the opposite direction, but only 15 mins from the boatyards). Reedham is less travelling than Loddon of course so that's an option but it's quite tidal so can be a pig to moor at. I don't know your experience level so that might not be an issue.
  15. I think most of the Norwich Park & Ride sites are now back up and running, so that would be a good option..
  16. It's good going for a Vectra! I'm guessing that's not the 1.9 diesel.... Or it's had the water pump swapped out.
  17. Yeah I think there's a reason they consistently come top of reliability and owner satisfaction surveys.
  18. I do like a Volvo but worry how much influence Ford had during their ownership - I know the previous two V40's were basically a Focus. Ford are decent compared to the shonky brands like Fiat, Renault/Nissan, VW etc, but they're not 'old Volvo' or Toyota / Honda levels of build quality. How much Ford is in the bigger Volvos I'm not sure...
  19. You know the only sensible replacement begins with an 'H' and ends with 'onda'.....
  20. If you're storing video files, it might be worth at looking at how they are encoded as you can make HUGE gains in storage utilisation by re-encoding them into H264 or even H265 using Handbrake or something similar. You will need decent hardware to play back H265, but sometimes it can make your files ten times smaller with no perceptible loss in quality. I've been going through my old videos recently and while you'd expect 4K stuff to be the real culprit, it's surprising how poor the compression often is on 1080p video simply because older hardware lacked the computing power to compress the files efficiently.
  21. You may find that there is a build for your device of AOSP (the Android Open Source Project), which is the base 'stock' Android direct from Google. The best place to look is the XDA Developers forum, which has little to do with development for XDA's these days. In practice, these builds tend to have things missing or not working quite right and of course there will be no support so honestly I wouldn't really recommend it. One of my Samsung devices had a lovely new OS build available, but with a warning that the drivers for the sound didn't work properly. Cheers guys, that's useful. Unfortunately this is the issue with Android - Google were desperate for market share in the early days and let manufacturers put their own junk on top of Android. What this means is that it's now a bit of a monster which they are trying to fix but with considerable resistance from manufacturers who need to differentiate their offering from other Android hardware vendors. If you want a 'clean' Android device, either one of the first-party Google Pixel devices or something from OnePlus are probably the best bet given that they are actually properly tested and supported rather than having been chucked together by someone in their spare time.
  22. You can fit them to anything, but sometimes they are external and would not last long on a hirefleet. Yes, people really do fit those unfortunately..... Obviously, this is going to last a lot longer.
  23. They'll be more durable in terms of the motor not burning out, and it removes the problem of the heavy battery discharge. I suspect the control system and the (motorised) valves for the hydraulics will be the bits that go wrong, though. But in terms of a Broads cruiser you're taking the power from the hydraulics, so when in use they're giving you less propulsion power (which in a tight spot you may need lots of) and you need decent engine revs on to get decent thrust. I've seen lots of people using them and not understanding how they work (admittedly, why should they). With low engine revs they're crap, and you do have to plan in advance how you're going to use them.
