  1. It is indeed the wine bar. A new restaurant has just opened upstairs where the Indian used to be, can't remember the name though!
  2. When in Oulton Broad we often pop into The Broadview for a drink and lunchtime snack. Very good value in our opinion. Having said that we had a lovely roast in The Wherry on Sunday after intending to try The Commodore and walked into a virtually empty pub , looked at the menu and decided we could have a roast and a pudding at The Wherry for the price of one course there !
  3. I agree with Chris, I used to just wear a baseball cap and this resulted in losing the top of one ear to skin cancer and the bottom of the other one. Luckily all clear now and as advised at the time by the surgeon now wear a Tilley hat at all times when out in the sun.
  4. My late uncle who died at the age of 94 in 2019 trained at HMS Ganges in 1940 before service in the North Atlantic Convoys. When asked if he was ever the "button boy" he replied in his typical manner-----Not b---dy likely , I had more sense than that!!
  5. You are right there. In the late 1960's there was a boatyard up there called Toby Cruisers . I do not think it was there for long but I do remember seeing 2or 3 of their hire cruisers moored up the dyke, all with outboard engines.
  6. I will second that . A far warmer welcome than on our previous visit and good value menu as well. The drinks prices are not over the top either.
  7. As far as I am aware The Lady Of The Lake allows dogs inside. We were in there a couple of weeks ago and the food was good and quite reasonably priced. They also have a covered terrace at the rear of the pub.
  8. Having been in the mortgage business for more years than I like to remember, it is not unknown for buyers to wait until they have the mortgage offer to hand before instructing a full building survey or Homebuyers Report. The initial mortgage valuation is normally free so they may not want to pay out the money until they are sure they have the mortgage. I could go on forever about this but best I leave it there !!
  9. It is operated by Norfolk Broads Yachting Co. Telephone could be 01692 665517 or 07411 282729
  10. I think you are right there Andy. After they sold their cruisers they carried on with day boat hire for a few years. I also remember they ran The Pickerel pub at the top of the boatyard before it got turned into a house.
  11. Hi Clive. Going back to my youth (probably 40 years ago!) I remember Poolcraft having their fleet with names ending in WAY and on looking at the database I notice Clearway was the name of one of their boats. Happy memories of holidays in Beccles around 1970 so well before you were born !!
  12. I have found it in a 1985 Blakes Catalogue! I do no have any means of scanning at home but if you are happy to private message me with your e.mail address, I am happy to scan and send it to you when I pop into the office next week.
  13. We too have done the same and bought a few shares. We do not expect any return but just the satisfaction of hopefully saving this historic pub for the foreseeable future.
  14. As it is December again ,I thought this thread was worth a bump up! Have really missed them playing at The Stamford Arms this year, lets hope for a better 2021.
  15. I remember in the early 1970's eating in the Masquerade restaurant in Reedham which had been previously owned by Norman Chalk. I can't actually remember where it was situated in the village but I know that it was only a short walk from the quay. I do remember a conversation with the then owner who said that he operated the restaurant in the summer then worked in a pea processing factory in the winter !
  16. Thought that as it is now December it was worth bumping up my previous thread. Some of you may have seen this trio last one evening week at the end of Look East .
  17. On delving into this further, I see that on 4th September, the strike-off action was suspended. Having said that on 7th September the boat building arm in Brundall went into liquidation.
  18. Alden ,Patterson and Dashwood , a Norwich based group have a lovely song on YouTube with the above title. We saw them live in Pakefield a month or so ago and the song is well worth a listen. I gather Noel Dashwood is a volunteer with The Nancy Oldfield Trust in his spare time
  19. It is on the Museum Of The Broads Facebook page confirming the time and the date as Saturday 12th Oct.
  20. Many thanks for the warm welcome, we are up from deepest Hertfordshire for a week in the caravan tomorrow so although we will not be water based , The Wherry at Oulton Broad may well be utilised from time to time ! As for the Seagull outboard, I may well have a couple of spark plugs and prop springs hiding in the garage still !!
  21. I joined a few weeks ago but thought it about time to say hello. We currently own a static holiday caravan in Kessingland and mainly hire day boats from CC Marine in Beccles to take ourselves up and down the river with or without the grandchildren ! I first started coming to Beccles in the late 1960's with my With dinghy and Seagull outboard and spent many a happy hour on the river ---Gosh all the boatyards up-river from the bridge in those days. I/We have hired many boats over the years , here are a few i remember--- Forest Brown-Waveney Yacht Station Stalham Vanguard-Richardsons Typhoon-Alphacraft Starfire-Alphacraft Star Glory (Twice!) -Powles--Best boat ever!! Little Gem-Richardsons Sheerline-George Smith. No doubt a few more will spring to mind as soon as I have finished this post!
  22. If you google LITTLEBOY OF WROXHAM, there is quite a bit of information of William Littleboy selling his tour boats and launches to Charles Hannaford into what eventually became Broads Tours.
  23. Alf Morris Rivercraft Ltd is listed as 5 The Yacht Station Oulton Broad, I remember it there many years ago as Stock & Morris.
