Still an open pub is infinitely preferable to a closed pub any day. Anyone know the Kings Head in Lingwood? Simon The 35 footers have more space around the rear berth too - the reflections are s little more tight for space but perfectly adequate. Lovely boats, Swancraft quality

Pub all day yesterday so just seen this Hired all 3 from Swancraft 2 Reflections one shaft, one hydraulic lovely little 31 footers Radiance newer than Rapture 2010 from memory both lovely boats 35 foot Alpha hulls, Radiance has berth in saloon hence L shaped settee All have (or had) superb hot water and battery systems. Not hired since Swancraft so can't comment on how they have fared now. Any specific questions please let me know. Jean has certainly hired one of the Reflections

If it were me, I'd seriously consider that, particularly the beer bit! Don't forget it is near enough the longest days so you could probably navigate at 5 if you wanted! You don't have to hit Yarmouth bang on slack water, an hour afterwards wouldn't do any harm and you'll have a good push across Breydon although you might be slowed a little as you approach Yarmouth. Just depends if you are early risers!!!

Wroxham to Yarmouth is quite a long trip in one hop but quite do-able. Your estimate of about 5 hours sounds OK and you should be going down with the tide which will help. Add another 45 minutes or so for Breydon water and you may be ready to stop by the time you reach the end of Breydon. As others have said Burgh Castle or the Berney Arms would be the nearest. Reedham or St Olaves would be another hour although I believe that you can moor at Polkey’s Mill half way to Reedham. Personally I’d go for Burgh Castle or Berney Arms. Don’t moor on the pontoon at Goodchilds though as this is for services. I think the Berney Arms would be slightly easier. Not wishing to teach you how to suck eggs but please don’t forget to moor into the tide! Also bear in mind the rise and fall is quite a lot in these places so allow enough slack on your ropes and be careful climbing onto the bank. But above all enjoy!! The Southern Broads are usually quieter and well worth the trip.

Indeed, lets see what happens. As far as I am aware Councils will bend over backwards to work with operators and try to help with the improvements needed before enforcement action is taken. I think given that the Council have gone this far would seem to indicate the seriousness of their concerns and no doubt they will have the evidence to back it up. As Liz says the operator has presented mitigating circumstances, interesting to see what happens.

That is sad news indeed. Jill will be missed by us all. Condolences to her family. Very sad loss.

I must admit I don't go in very often, lovely pub but the beers are a bit run of the mill. I tend to go in the Wig and Pen a bit further along or over the river to the Leopard

Good point Liz, the gents in the Swan is on the higher level. Given its a Bank holiday as well I think a phone call ahead would be a good idea. Do the public loos in Horning have disabled access? Its not too far from the Swan just across the car park at the rear.

Agree with Grace, those would be the two to go for. The Swan has some raised areas inside but there are tables on the level particularly on the right as you enter the pub. Not sure when you are going but if its at a busy time a phone call ahead might be worthwhile. Enjoy!

Hi Neil I think the 3 Horseshoes had closed by then but I am struggling to think when it was! I do vaguely remember going in at some point. Hi Trevor, thanks, it was just the Norfolk part of the Broads and GY so no Norwich or Suffolk sadly (although I do have an old guide from the early 80's which includes Norwich if you are interested). I didn't copy the GY entries as they were a bit dire but could easily add them. Steve, yes I agree Yorkshire Bitter was somewhat grim! Tolly Cobbold does seem to get bad press, it may be partly due to landlords not looking after it properly though which would account for the sour taste. And yes, the Black Horse was a welcome oasis, beer very well kept as I recall. Norwich Bitter - um, probably the push I needed to join CAMRA back in 1975!

These are a selection of the pubs that you might have visited on a Broads holiday 25 years ago. Many of the beers mentioned have now long gone (some thankfully)! The Broads seems to have fared better than most in terms of pub closures but the loss of the Castle in Wroxham and the Railway Tavern in Reedham will be much lamented (by me anyway)!!

I’ve just been watching the latest film which Carol has added to the Broadland Memories website (via YouTube). It’s a fascinating bit of history from 1966 showing a family aboard Fulmar 1, a magnificent wooden forty footer from Richardson’s. There are some really good shots of the Southern Broads too including Oulton Broad, Thorpe, The New Cut and Norwich. Some interesting boats feature too including Morning Flight and a huge coaster (presumably on the Yare). There is also a good shot of a Herbert Woods classic (Countess of Light) ?? plus an amazing view of what looks like a Freeman on the plane, it’s certainly going some! I must say I agree with Simon, that would be the main concern for me as well. I like to go at certain times and conversely there are times when I would rather not go too!

Thanks Carol. Yes it's simple and effective and always worked for us (touch wood) The advantage is that the boat is under control almost immediately so you can moor with very little fuss. And yes, we too have witnessed more than a few 'domestics' with the stern firmly in the middle of the river!

Glad you enjoyed the Dog Inn - excellent pub IMHO also I must compliment you in your taste in beer - Humpty Dumpty and Broadland Sunrise in particular are two of my favourites. Sorry to hear about the mooring - Ludham Bridge always seems to be one of those windy spots and of course whichever bank you choose the wind is always blowing off it, it's sods law. It's not infalable by any means but Mrs Nog always gathers both stern and bow ropes together and provided the stern rope is long enough it's usually possible to step ashore and you immediately have control of the boat to pull the stern in. It works for us (but no granny and eggs intended
