  1. Christmas Crack on gravity. Superb stuff.
  2. Surlingham Ferry very festive at the mo - Humpty Dumpty Little Sharpie AND Christmas Crack. Bliss
  3. This is the life, empty moorings and a very nice pint of Humpty Dumpty too. Bliss :-)
  4. I do believe there is. I think the boat is called Louise and lives upstream of the bridge. Like a very flat barge with low air draft.
  5. Fantastic result, I watched the debate on TV yesterday afternoon. I think it will more level the playingfield Peter rather than disadvantaging free house operators. It should mean thàt Pubco tenants can make decent living at last and also sell us beer on the same terms as the free houses i.e. not having to pay at least 50% more for it!
  6. Actually I have considerable empathy with the OP on this one. We use our local butcher and local shops as much as possible. Also the likes of Tesco and the Co op are closing pubs up and down the country and turning them into convenience stores.
  7. According to my Jarrolds guide GY to Norwich is 27.5 and GY to Beccles is 22.5 I think Geldeston is about 3 miles further so I would agree Norwich would seem to have it by a short head. Bear in mind also that the head of navigation is technically New Mills rather than the Yacht Station.
  8. Bit like Ludham Bridge on a Sunday! :-o
  9. An object lesson in customer relations combined with people skills AND technical expertise (obviously) Well done Richardsons
  10. Quite possibly but I think the point I was trying to make is that for the once a year hire I'm not too worried about it but if I were lucky enough to have my own boat it might then make a difference as I'd be using a lot more fuel!
  11. Incredible! I want one! Thanks for sharing with us Robin – a fascinating video.
  12. I think Clive is right in that most hire yards will charge out at around 140 ppl – I know that Swancraft certainly do. I think the simple reason is that the yards make a small profit which is built into their business model for hire charges. As Peter mentioned it is swings and roundabouts – if they sold the fuel cheaper or at cost they would have to recoup it in the hire charges so it all evens out in the end. The likes of Goodchilds, Brooms, Horning Marina Services etc mainly sell to private owners and therefore are in a more competitive market but in any event probably make their profits from servicing etc so its probably a good way of attracting custom. However to put it in perspective – I used 90 litres over 2 weeks holiday in the summer. At Goodchilds prices I would have saved 27p per litre or in total just under 25 quid. I don’t think I’d want to bother trundling all the way over to Burgh Castle to save 25 quid! It would be a different story of course if I had a twin engined sea going boat which would cost hundreds to fill up!
  13. Hi Jon Don't worry about it, perfectly reasonable question to ask At least it created some debate! Don't be put 'orf
  14. Hi John No problem, PM you later if OK
  15. Long story but in effect, yes
  16. Must admit this threw me too. As Jeff says these places are indeed in EAST Yorkshire. In fact I spent many years in Hornsea. Pubs are not up to Norfolk standards but I could suggest a few of the better Ones!
  17. There is an article about it in the EDP http://www.eveningnews24.co.uk/news/village_in_shock_after_12_year_old_boy_dies_in_ludham_crash_1_3812326 So sad for the family and everyone involved. As Andy has said the traffic goes very fast along that stretch and there is a bend near the Dog Inn which makes crossing very hazardous. I’ve visited the Dog on numerous occasions as its one of my favourite pubs but I also exercise the greatest care when crossing the road for that very reason. Sadly one of Lorraine’s dogs was run over a few years ago at probably around the same spot. It’s all very sad.
  18. Most enjoyable read, many thanks for sharing with us. I don’t think you’ll go far wrong with Summercraft, they seem to have a good reputation and my sister has been with them too and been very pleased. Roll on next year!
  19. Hi MM I was last there in June. The chef is Portuguese and at the time they were planning a Portuguese themed weekend but as far as I know they do 'normal' grub the rest of the time. They have half a dozen well kept real ales and usually feature local ones too. There is a quiz night too but forget when this is.
  20. Fingers crossed for you Jim, hope you should be OK. Failing all else you could get a taxi, it's only a few minutes by road. Have a good one!
  21. Rising Sun. Nice position right next to river, pleasant outdoor seating with good river views. Beer choice and quality a bit mediocre IMHO At least you have 4 pubs to choose from! Railway Tavern now closed.
  22. Kings Head right next to moorings. Again good reputation for quality food. Usually a couple of quality real ales on but not cheap. Good pub though.
  23. Red Lion about 5 - 10 mins from Common moorings -good selection of real ales, often a Humpty Dumpty, S and P or Grain. They do food but bit more basic than RS. Well worth a visit.
  24. RS is a brisk walk from the Common moorings, takes me about 20 mins - v good reputation for food and usually have a well kept Grain brewery beer on. Nice terrace and beer garden at rear.
