  1. Your first and foremost responsibility is for the safety of your own crew and vessel so if someone is slowing down below good steering speed overtake them, if need be use a bit more throttle to get past a bit quicker (within reason), if you are heading with the tide towards a bridge you have the right of way over someone coming against the flow, most canoes can manouver a lot quicker than you can in a much tighter space, the old 'sail has right of way over power' thing is BS, it all depends on the situation at the time. If running with the tide and not sure of a bridge height the thing to do is swing into the tide and reverse through with more control (using forward throttle), as long as no-one is right behind at the time.
  2. I think the reason why bss only reccomend co detectors is the fact that they can't actually test them without lots of expensive equipment (that we don't want to pay for), my boat passed it's first bss on ventilation as all the vents measured up ok but the previous owner had put 1" polystyrene between roof and wooden headlining blocking the gap between the outer and inner vent covers, I only found out when taking it down to run some wires, it had no lower door ventilation till I put them in so with a family of 4 on board it's probably only that they smoked a lot and opened the windows that they are still alive now (also had unflued gas fridge in cabin with a black soot patch above) If your boat has vents make sure you can see all the way through them, if they don't line up check the gap is clear, don't just assume....
  3. This needs a bit of double checking but hopefully it should be a useful guide to broads tide times that can be displayed on a pc or smartphone (I have it on a samsung galaxy ace), it can be downloaded from http://www.leomagill.co.uk/2013%20tides.xls The times are based on lowestoft sourced from the imray/cruising club tables so won't exactly match the broads booklet (at a guess, don't have it handy)so could be up to 1/2 hour out in places, the yellow section is bst and adjusted accordingly the rest is gmt, red lines are high water and blue lines are low water. Any cockups found let me know, if you find it useful chuck a quid in a lifeboat box next time you see one. I hope to do the same based on walton times and adjust for east coast spots around to the roach. It is only a guide, use proper sources for actual navigation
  4. You should try the tesco meatballs, they are the dogs bo**ocks.
  5. As long as the pub is better than last year I'll be in for a peruse from time to time while there anyway Richard, if a small amount more expensive I will always go for the small local business anyway as long as you won't be offended by me asking for a deal, I have had a few deals through Jones before that resulted in them getting cheaper suppliers from the research so it's never a bad thing to be told what you are competing with, Mick Jones has also told me to go to the opposition if it would be a loss, I have no issues with that as it's all just business. Trev I sincerely hope all is sorted and will actually see you out on the river this coming season, preferably at a pub, after all it's your round......
  6. Thats when it spin Trevor instead of just rattling.... Is it fixed now?
  7. I look forward to a visit in the woods end, we havn't been in since feeling that customers were an annoyance last season, as said I hope he gets the prices set right and a better menu than Phil had, after all he has the ferry house at surlingham to compete with and we've never left there hungry or dissapointed or feeling less than welcome.(or ushered out the door too early) How are you for price matching Richard? Unfortunately for you we have one of the best chandleries around on our route to norfolk (L H Jones St.Ives) and they're always good for a deal if you've seen something cheaper elsewhere.
  8. I'd want to get the remains off the shaft even if it's only for curiosity to see whats under it, careful grinding could still do the trick.
  9. A puller is far better than a hammer and if you can heat the centre bush somehow that'll help loads, how to do that without knackering the prop bush I don't know, ignore the boiling water idea as it just isn't enough.(wheres the gas-axe) Whacking it probably won't damage the bearing but will very likely bend the shaft, the bearing is the cheap bit but the shaft is not so be very careful, I have straightened enfield shafts before but it takes a good while with centres, hydraulic press, and a dial gauge to get it right, then it needs crack testing to see if you've over done it and buggered it anyway so best not bent in the first place. I always like to check shaft run-out anyway as you'd be surprised how much they can get bent.( 2.5 bmc diesel stopped dead @ 2500rpm does it well, .032" run out, that would be a concrete step then....shaft still going )
  10. This was how it looked when we were there in 2009 at the same spot, levels were above normal then as lots of fishing platforms were below water.
  11. What can I say to a thread like this.
  12. Not true as I've only just looked at it....
  13. And if you've already donated theres always this one too. http://uk.movember.com/mospace/2213236/
  14. Good work chaps, I think I've made a measly £121 when all cash is collected, so how many mo's were greyer than expected?
  15. Could you not retain the existing manifold and still use a heat exchanger? Raw water out of heat exchanger into manifold, Bit of re-plumbing but not impossible.
  16. Think I'd just buy a heat exchanger and go for split coolant/raw system, better for both water temp and engine.
  17. If you are not sure about the channel going against the ebb is the best way, you can approach slowly under full control and stop easily, also headroom is only going to increase if you have to wait.
  18. Call me silly but isn't there already a trench running from lowestoft to norwich, I know it's full of water but so is the ground around there.
  19. for that, may go for a change of position then.
  20. I have a battery one on Leo just below berth level (co is heavier than air), only changed the batteries once in 5 years so don't worry about taking them out to extend life, they beep when the batteries get low and it's always quite comforting to see the occaisional led flash in the cabin at night to tell you it's alive. Just had a day off work with nasty flu like symptoms but I'm fairly sure it's just a slight cold with a big dose of co from work after an exhaust leak on our testbed so yes it can happen and does happen, I'm lowering the co detector at work on monday....
  21. It's getting there, how's you lot doing?
  22. We'll take that as forum speak for pi55ed then.....
  23. Screwdrivers every time! It's the operator that does damage not the tools.
  24. I've been conned into the facial fungus thing by my local pub, had a go last year too.
