    Trafalgar Day

We visited 'The Victory' last week, and were told the story of Nelson's return (or at least his body). Apparently when it was returned to 'Blighty, the lid was taken off the barrel. Well, sailors being sailors, they couldn't resist a tasting of the 'preservative'. It was declared to be very good, possessing of plenty of body....... I'll get me coat...
  2. Of course, had there been a tide barrier at Great Yarmouth......
  3. I'm afraid I know no more than has been already posted. However the fact that this has spread over social media like a forest fire in a drought displays the mistrust that surrounds the Broads Authority's Executives !
  4. The BA web site is to be polite - 'coy' on this matter, however It has been discussed by the Broads Tourism Group, who will have 'contacts'.
  5. The word on the rhond is that The Broads Authority are planning to close the Paddy's Lane moorings at the head of Barton Broad to save money. The have already served notice on Norfolk Wildlife Trust to terminate the current agreement for the boardwalk to be there. This would be a very bad idea, for a number of reasons. It's a popular stop for many, although there are no facilities. Closure could seriously impact on the operations of the Nancy Oldfield Trust, since it would add to the congestion which occurs in the narrow Lime Kiln dyke leading to Neatishead Staithe. Please consider signing the petition. http://www.change.org/p/dr-john-packman-broads-authority-reconsider-any-mooring-closure-of-paddy-lane-at-barton-turf?utm_campaign=friend_inviter_chat&utm_medium=facebook&utm_source=share_petition&utm_term=permissions_dialog_false&share_id=CvSCWMokGK
  6. Give a man a fish and he will eat. Teach a man to fish and he will sit in the stern of his boat and drink beer.
  7. Daft idea. Gets in the way of the boom......
  8. "Of course it’s all bloody rubbish, but I thought I would get with the current Zeitgeist dribbling out of Yare House." Love it ! :clap
  9. ...and how many ( on the Broads) would know what THAT meant ?
  10. The first piece of advice I would give to any hirer would be 'read the bl***y hirers handbook. Amazing what you can find in there Secondly (to any mobo) please accept the directions given by the saily. We are trying to be helpful you know. Oh, and shouting at me "don't effing well tell me where to go" doesn't help. Yes, I have been so told, (But he was a private boat )
  11. There is 'previous'. A Yare Navigation race and a very senior and experienced Yachtsman some time ago, but best not to comment further given the present case.
  12. Yes JM, A good, if a little light read. I would thoroughly recommend it to those with an interest in the history of the Broads, particularly the last 250 years or so, There are some good illustrations as well, there is even one of a general store in Oulton Broad.....
  13. http://gcaptain.com/containerships-collide-suez-canal/ Ouch!
  14. Who remembers the Shop on Thurne Staithe - the one with the petrol pump outside that's now the very posh house? And the Caravan Club site adjacent.....
  15. Probably the same bloke who was wagging his tail all the way down the dyke. Upon hearing 'my strong remonstration' he replied " don't stress mate, they don't say nuffin when you take 'em back". I explained that my boat, along with several others would NOT be taken back ( as politely as I was able ) he appeared genuinely surprised! They live ( and boat) amongst us. Thank GOD they aren't all like that.
  16. . She's a rag 'n stick, so a free standing job is no good. Something like the spinflo is what is needed, but I'd like 'pre owned' if possible. To be honest, I'd rather spend money on rig etc. The BSS isn't due for a couple of years yet, it's something I know I shall probably have to address before then.
  17. That's why I'm looking for a 'pre owned' one. About £400 or so new for what I'm looking at.
  18. Before the next BSS inspection, I shall probably have to replace our on board cooker. If anybody has one for sale, let me know. It must have flame failure devices. Ta!
  19. Welcome - and enjoy your boat - as I'm sure you will, having been taught to be cautious and that
  20. Stowager, the multiplier is a constant. However, with a design of this type as the vessel heels to the wind, more of the hull is immersed and then the waterline length increases. Ergo. the hull speed increases! The overhangs were a design feature in Victorian/Edwardian racing yachts, since handicaps were calculated using waterline length at rest. Any slight heel therefore would offer an advantage.......
  21. A simple explanation of hull speed can be found here http://www.sailboat-cruising.com/hullspeed.html
  22. She's about 28 feet on deck from memory, but has long 'overhangs' at both ends, so waterline length (which governs hull speed) I'm guessing at no more than 18 feet, so that would be no more than 6mph using the formula
  23. ...... and they don't charge to park a car.... yet We park there and go to the chippy!
