  1. Hi Neil, Sadly there are far too many boats that do not move or hardly move. We had a timeshare cottage at the Windermere Marina Village, most of the boats there only tended to have people on them at weekends, such a shame. Regards Alan
  2. I have just been onto the webcam that shows the Norwich Peregrines nesting platform on the Norwich Cathedral, a pair of birds are back again this year. Looking forward to developments. Please see the link to our featured webcams:- http://thenorfolkbroads.net/forum/forum/124-webcams/ Regards Alan
  3. We do not have a microwave, or a generator, our mod cons include an electric kettle, toaster and TV should we happen to be on shore power. Boating is about what you make of it, watching the world go by, the odd conversation with like minded crews and the occasional brew. Regards Alan
  4. Come on guy's the Broads are for use by everyone, there is only a few sections that are used for skiing and these are limited to certain times during the year. To be honest I have not seen any for quite a few years. Regards Alan
  5. Hello, Sarah, Welcome to the NBN Forum. I agree if this is your first visit, stick to the Northern Broads, at Stokesby there is a small green with swings ect and the ferry inn just down from the green. The Ferry Inn at Horning no longer has its games room but I am not to sure about the amusements that were outside. Regards Alan & Tan
  6. Hello Stevos747, Welcome to the NBN forum. Regards Alan & Tan
  7. Hi MM, I agree with the lower speed limit at schools, but with regards to overall safety to the children would be better if schools opened up their car parks for the use of parents to collect and drop off children. What we have at the moment is roads leading to the schools with cars parked on both sides of the roads or pavements, junctions where you can not see because of illegal parking, the end result will be children will be maimed or killed no matter what the posted speed is. I am sure many of you will see this every day of school terms, if you live anywhere near to a school. Regards Alan
  8. Hi Iain, I am surprised that you didn't borrow his tools and get the job done right Regards Alan
  9. I saw it as well and thought it should have been the Yorkshire Dales on the options given. No doubt anyone watching in Yare House would have liked the program. Regards Alan
  10. Ensuring boat safety in the Lake district is a very easy task, all boats have to be craned in or the smaller boats can use a slipway (these are few and far between) if a BSS is not in force then they could be refused entry onto the lakes. This should be adopted IMHO two deaths a few years ago surely justify the adoption. Regards Alan
  11. We have never hired on the Norfolk Broads other than the occasional day boat, we have hired Narrow Boats and cruisers elsewhere and we have never had battery issues, after saying that we always get the yards to remove the microwave, because the space can be better used. We tend on these holidays to cruise between 5 to 8 hours or in the case of a ring route maybe even longer. Most boatyards recommend a minimum of 5 hours travel to charge the batteries. On Ranworth Breeze batteries we replaced all of our lights with led inserts to reduce our overall load. use converted table lights on low voltage. We do not have a microwave on board, but have a toaster and electric kettle when on shore power. Other than having to go back to the marina to give new owners training or picking up guests we are usually away from the marina all week. We do try get on shore power but if needs be we can go a day or two without (keeping a good watch on the battery indicators). If we are moored near other people and need to get up early and set of to catch a tide, we tell the people near to us, we get up, get ready, start the engine and leave, none of this running the engine while doing checks or making breakfast. The best policy is keep any disturbance to a minimum. We all know what Robin thinks of batteries on good number of the Norfolk Broads boats Regards Alan
  12. Hi Iain, For me you could buy Potter Heigham Bridge for £15, but you would have to take it away Regards Alan
  13. Hello Ric, Welcome to the NBN forum. Regards Alan & Tan
  14. It as always been the situation that a new phone installation can cause delays, no exchange equipment, no lines available from the exchange to the cabinet or the cabinet to the house. Both my father in law and Tan used to work for BT in day, Tan worked in Sales and Les worked in the drawing office. Regards Alan
  15. It is always best practice when dealing with any company to speak to a person to get the job underway but I always follow up with a written confirmation or ask for a letter of confirmation from the person I talked to covering the topics of the conversation. Regards Alan
  16. A friend of mine sent me this video link. It is interesting, well I thought so. http://www.chonday.com/Videos/trailerghu4 Regards Alan
  17. Hi Steve, A noisy engine or Cliff, an easy choice, I would settle for the engine, at least it will not keep saying you how many decades it had been in the charts Regards Alan
  18. I guess we have all been in the situation of encountering an hire boat (all electric, no gas) that has to use the engine to heat the water for a shower or boil a kettle. Our worse case was at Loddon where a boats engine was on for 3 hours in the late afternoon/evening. Most of the crews do not have an idea how noisy the engine is from inside their boats. As already stated we have talked this topic to death over the last few years. Regards Alan
  19. I think Grace has it covered in where to buy cakes, I have to agree the shop at Stokesby sell some very good cakes. After saying the above we find the cakes at Budgens to be better than most supermarket cakes, we bought one (coffee cake) this weekend whilst we were on the boat. Regards Alan
  20. Hello Gussey, Welcome to the NBN forum. Regards Alan
  21. Hello Nigel, Welcome to the NBN forum from Tan & myself. If you require any advice please ask away many of the forum members do not bite, well not too much Regards Alan
  22. Hi Peter we were faced with that in Sheffield two or three years ago, there are so few people that pay for the service, maybe two or three per street. I already composted most of our green waste and just tended to put the weeds into the green bins, so they now go into our black bins. Sheffield struggled to meet its recycling quota before they withdrew the green bin service. so heaven knows how they balance the books now. Regards Alan
  23. Workshops & Feasibility Studies, the answer to everything these days, what ever happened to decisive actions to problems? Regards Alan
  24. We were hoping to go onto the Caladonian Canal in 2013 but because we needed accommodation for 3 x double berths in comfort boats we were looking at (bearing mind this was early May) were between £3500 and £4500 for the week. We opted for a week on the Scottish Canals at £1750 all in for a narrow boat. Again somewhat more than expensive than in the UK, but I expect that there are fees paid to Scottish Canals for the use of lock keepers who do all of the work on the locks & bridges, this is done by appointment times and is somewhat restrictive. Regards Alan
  25. Maybe Grace has one of those wine bags hung on the back of the kitchen door Regards Alan
