  1. Oh and sorry but I have a PS. I have three switches to my bedroom light and can turn the light on or off from any one of them irrespective of which switch was used to put them in the existing condition, so if I turn the light on from any of the switches A, B, or C and then turn them off again from any of those switches. I'm still struggling to work out the wiring diagram from that one too.
  2. Whoops, sorry to disappear like that, had to go to Gravesend for a party last night and have only just got back. This whole thing came about from a discussion in a pub (like they do) where we were talking about an automatic lighting system based not on what was being foisted on us by the likes of B&Q but on what we actually wanted. The situations were each a little different but the overall requirements were the same. It started that the system needed to be automatic for convenience and security. It was felt that these days with LEDs taking so little juice to run, we wanted the lights on from dusk to midnight. if they came on at the same time each night it was a bit of a security giveaway, and if it was just a time switch, we'd be forever changing it. so the time switch and light sensitive switch was the obvious solution. I pointed out that I sometimes needed the carport lights on in the day as it was pretty shady in there, so the override manual switch was included. Then one of the guys started talking about the occasions when someone arrived at the house after midnight, and wouldn't it be nice if the lights came on for them, or just to come on for security, so the PIR switch was added into the equation. So, as you see, none of the individual requirements is in any way unusual, many people have some of the functions but nobody seems to have strung them all together as yet. I started thinking about setting them up as individual switches and couldn't for the life of me work out the basic wiring diagram I needed to achieve the results. So, I asked the group I always ask when I run into difficulty... you!
  3. Yes, it's just the light sensitive switch and some of the lights themselves that need to be totally weatherproof
  4. Warning This site uses CCTV and security carrots Sorry timbo, it really doesn't cut it does it.
  5. No, I'm after the lights being on from dusk to midnight then to come on again if anyone approaches between midnight and dawn. plus a manual on/off switch if I want to work on the car in the carport in poor light.
  6. Now Here’s a thing. At night it gets dark. Ok ok, call me a ‘know-it-all’ if you must but I notice these things. I am reliably informed that the way to overcome this darkness at night is to turn a light on. Well that’s fine and dandy but I don’t want it on all night all so when I’m ready to sleep, I turn it off again. Many of you will be saying “Great, problem solved.” (ok, most of you will be asking yourselves why you are reading all this garbage and muttering “prat” under your breaths) but I regret the problem is far from solved as you will see… ( if it’s light) Well, this tricky little poser can be sorted automattically by having the light on a time switch. On it comes at six in the evening and off again at midnight. MAGIC !!! errr wait a moment,… not solved! The time it gets dark varies. No problemo. I get rid of the time switch and put in a light sensitive switch instead. Now the light comes on when it gets dark whatever the time. MAGIC !!! errr wait a moment… not solved! The light stays on until dawn. Still no problemo I plug the light sensitive switch into a time switch. The time switch is set to come on at midday and go off at midnight so between those two hours, the light comes on when it gets dark and goes off at midnight. MAGIC !!! errr wait a moment… not solved. I was so excited to try this I watched it when the power came on, watched again when the light came on as it became dark and then saw it turn off at midnight. So extatic with joy was I, that I got up to go to the loo. That’s when I stubbed my toe because the lights were out and it was dark and past midnight. What I need is a proximity switch so that if the lights are out but it is dark and someone wants to see where they are going, it overrides the time switch but not the light sensitive switch. I’m not sure of how to wire this… but it goes further. There are times when although light, I need to turn the lights on for a bit of extra light. This has to be manual so what I need is a manual switch that will turn the lights on or off whatever the situation.. So, in short, this is what I need. A master switch that turnes the shooting match on/off A manual switch that turns the lights on whatever the other switches are doing (except the master) A Time switch A light sensitive switch, and A proximity switch And finally a wiring diagram to show me how to wire that little lot. Ok, the reality of this is to control some outside security lights in a carport and on a wall so the whole lot needs to be weather proof too. Any ideas?
  7. Is it just a name change or has the top management changed?
  8. That's when my car is at it's safest !
  9. Keith, My comment was aimed at the three preceding posts and was very much tongue in cheek
  10. We don't all have "cruise control" perhaps the law should only apply to those who have.
  11. Yes Charlie, I agree but there are two different things ta take into account with this thread. If driving through an area I'm unfamiliar with, I am informed of the safe driving speed by "speed limits". Yes there are other signs too, but they can be missed by even the most attentive driver. Speed limits help. Speed limits work. HOWEVER, it is essential that the speed limits are set properly. A stretch of road near me where the national speed limit applied (single carriageway so 60 mph). there were some fatal accidents. The limit was reduced to 50. Still accidents occurred, some fatal. so the limit was further reduced to 40 and speed cameras were introduced. This was the wrong way round to do this. What should have happened was the cameras should have been introduced first, preferably "average speed cameras". It was patently obvious from the start that the accidents involved drivers doing well over 70 in the 60 limit, and overtaking on the gentle bend at that speed. It is my view (and therefore fact) that enforcing the original speed limits would have achieved the desired results.
  12. I have no objection to Safety cameras" when they are placed at hazards (outside schools for example), but I do feel that the speed limit should be very clearly marked where they are. Average speed cameras are even better for general road safety and are in my opinion a far better option.
  13. Is there any reason why salt wouldn't have been produced on Breydon, or even a lot further up even as the waterways are now?
  14. Thank you Jaws, I think that this says it all. Whilst I fully agree that certain flags should not be flown (white ensign etc.) I see no reason for anyone to lose sleep over such a faux pas. I for one dislike seeing the Jolly Roger being flown, except when all the crew are dressed as pirates and fun is being had. Under those circumstances it's all part of the dressing up. To fly it as a standard is largely pointless and if anything cheapens the whole appearance of the boat, That is however just my opinion. I suppose my own view is... Fly what you like, how you like, but fly it with pride.
  15. Good idea, you might think of doing that on the model as well.
  16. I really hope that isn't a euphemism !
  17. Just been checking. The boat pictured is White Emblem not as I first thought Silver Emblem. Oh well, close but no cigar!
  18. I favour bread in that area. It's very good just below the Sutton Stalham fork. Find a quietish spot to moor, tie up then wait a few minutes for the water to settle before starting. This is the time to set things up. Ideally you need to get the freshest crustiest loaf you can lay your hands on. I also use cheese, preferably one of the Stilton family (I have started using white Stilton of late and find it pretty good) My method is very simple. Take a largish piece of the bread, place some of the cheese on it and rinse it down with a glass of reasonable red. perhaps a quality Cote du Rhone. When fishing this method it is essential not to put any bait on your hook, as any disturbance from those irritating fish will be most unwelcome. Tight lines and tighter friends. That's what I always say!!!
  19. I think you might find that the boat is Silver Emblem and that it was taken when Pennant holidays was the booking agent. We hired it once, a lovely boat.
  20. Would a poem about such a majestic craft be a Barque ode ?
  21. Once again I keep coming back to my point, especially after Alan's comment. If a smoke alarm goes off it wakes you up to a visible problem... Smoke ! Because you can see it, you can identify the source and react accordingly. Not the case with Co. The alarm goes off. If there's no obvious source you ventilate the boat and ensure everybody is on the bank and feeling well. BUT THEN WHAT ?????. It's 3am, raining just a bit and you are standing on the bank at Salhouse Broad. The alarm is silent now. What do you do next?
  22. Sorry Keith, the point I was trying to make was that to remove someone's driving license is a hefty penalty for a minor offence. to use points to remove dangerous drivers is fine and I fully support that, but take a person living out in the country and stop him driving would be unreasonable (in my opinion) for what is after all, probably a genuine oversight. Let the punishment fit the crime. Going back to the exhaust and the hole in it, at no time did I suggest that the car HAD failed an MOT but that such a hole would fail one. It is still points on the license even with a valid MOT, yet of no danger.
  23. So if I had a small hole in the exhaust and already had points on my license, You'd support my loosing my license? one can always find examples where something can prove to be dangerous and one can always find situations where something can be found to justify a legal point. There are those who tell storys about people who would have been killed if they'd been wearing seatbelts/crash helmets, but these are irrelevant to the mainstream. My point is simple. If someone does something that is dangerous it should be dealt with as such. If it's a matter of paperwork then again it should be dealt with as such.
