SteveO
A friend of ours on the Northern Broads is having problems with the gearbox on his Freeman 23 (probably a J type - it keeps jumping out of gear!) and is trying to locate a local engineer with expertise on this particular bit of kit, who would be prepared to come out and fix it for him. I would be grateful for any recommendations, which I will pass on. Many thanks Steve
CambridgeCabby
I believe this weekend there is a Freemans owners meet at Salhouse , may be a good idea to pop down there perhaps

Vaughan
A freeman would have a Parsons mechanical gearbox which can be adjusted from outside, to get the right tension on the clutch. This would be all it would need, but I can't remember where the nut is! I suggest John Spruce.

JanetAnne
I would disconnect the cable first and put the box into gear manually just to check it is a box issue and not either a cable or adjustment issue at the helm?
Vaughan
Unless its an old one with a manual lever on the floor?
SteveO
It is the "big lever" version. Cheers Steve
Vaughan
In which case it is adjustable. I recommended John Spruce as he is an old git like me who remembers the days of petrol day launches, which all had these engines. So long as the slack in the tension has not caused the clutch to slip, you should be all right.
ChrisB
Have you tried Sheridan Marine/Freeman Cruisers for advice. When they are up to speed they are really good. Back in 2006 we really fancied an early freeman. We were prepared to spend quite serious money getting it renovated from the bottom up but alas, well let us say service was erratic. We once drove from Bledlow Ridge to near Goring for an appointment and the place was closed having phoned the week before. So our "Freeman Dream" remained just that and we bought a new Viking to potter about on.
Mowjo
Have you checked the gearbox oil level?? my 23 used to jump out of gear if the oil got too low! a friend in my marina had the same problem, I topped up the gearbox oil ands it's been fine since,,
Vaughan
It is a splash fed gearbox, so that is a good piece of "first aid".
