JimG
Are there still 3 pubs relatively close to the public moorings. Last time I was there, there was The Rising Sun, The Kings Head and The Red Lion. How far away is The Recruiting Sergeant? Are these all still open? donnygeoff
the two near the moorings are still there, or they were in August. Rising sun and the one next to it.
NorfolkNog
RS is a brisk walk from the Common moorings, takes me about 20 mins - v good reputation for food and usually have a well kept Grain brewery beer on. Nice terrace and beer garden at rear.
NorfolkNog
Red Lion about 5 - 10 mins from Common moorings -good selection of real ales, often a Humpty Dumpty, S and P or Grain. They do food but bit more basic than RS. Well worth a visit.
NorfolkNog
Kings Head right next to moorings. Again good reputation for quality food. Usually a couple of quality real ales on but not cheap. Good pub though.
NorfolkNog
Rising Sun. Nice position right next to river, pleasant outdoor seating with good river views. Beer choice and quality a bit mediocre IMHO At least you have 4 pubs to choose from! Railway Tavern now closed.

NorfolkNog
Excellent information, thanks very much. Now let's hope we can get under the bridge!!! Fingers crossed for you Jim, hope you should be OK. Failing all else you could get a taxi, it's only a few minutes by road. Have a good one! MauriceMynah
How up to date is the Red Lion info? I went there a while back and it seemed to be some sort of "polish?" restaurant.
NorfolkNog
Hi MM I was last there in June. The chef is Portuguese and at the time they were planning a Portuguese themed weekend but as far as I know they do 'normal' grub the rest of the time. They have half a dozen well kept real ales and usually feature local ones too. There is a quiz night too but forget when this is.
Hockham Admiral
The Red Lion is my favourite pub in Colt, as the RS is a bit too far to walk back from! However, the sign prohibiting hire boats from going to the head of navigation had gone in May this year. I don't know if hire companies directly prohibit it though. lampini
We just "yesterday" went past the Rising Sun to have an explore.. About 500 yards past it gets very tight so we bottled it and span round whilst we could! Having said that - we did see a lot of fish in the water and a pair of kingfishers - so we deemed it worthwhile! , Jane and Jon
Rincewind
Lovely stretch of river but...there is also a fair bit of underwater plant life with which to contend. Weed filters can very soon get blocked along that section.
Guest
However, the sign prohibiting hire boats from going to the head of navigation had gone in May this year. I don't know if hire companies directly prohibit it though. The sign disappeared a long while ago - 10 years or so, perhaps. No hire company we've used has prohibited navigation up to the locks and we go up there from time to time. It is shallow and sometimes weedy, but apart from having to clear the weed filters we've never had a problem. Its a lovely short cruise. mbird
We used to pass the common and carry on up to the lock, as it is a beautiful stretch of river, with a few moorings. In our Alpha 32, we never encountered any problems with depth, though it is a bit weedy, that didn't cause a problem. From there the Recruiting Sargent is only 5 mins walk. The river opens out a bit at the lock and so there is plenty of room to turn. The last time we got up there we were guest aboard Broad Ambition, which is longer than our old Alpha, and even so, Griff had no problem turning round.
LizG
There is no problem turning around, the problem this summer was serious weed! The weed blocked the intact on WR before it even reached the filter - it was a serious blockage. LBBY have banned me from taking WR up there again
SPEEDTRIPLE
How easy would it be for the BA to oe-weed this stretch?. I don`t` mean dredging, just pulling up some of the larger weed growth. If they did that and then put up a sign saying "full navigation to the lock" or something like that, it would mean more trade for the pubs and shop. Jonathan
I have been to the Recruiting Sargent many times (by road unfortunately). It can get busy as it is popular for food. It is about a mile from the moorings at the Kings Head, but as has been said above, you can get a lot nearer by going up to the Mill (or where the mill was!), although I don't know the state of the weeds there at the moment. Jonathan
p.s. There are several small shops near the pub, including a general store and a Chinese take-away.
Guest
p.s. There are several small shops near the pub, including a general store and a Chinese take-away. And one of the best little deli and fresh fish/meat shops on the Broads. Not cheap but high quality. http://www.farmtoforkandfish.co.uk/
VetChugger
I've actually seen the BA's weed cutter up that end a couple of times. I suspect a few calls from boaters to the BA might just result in it getting nibbled again. This is the sort of work often done in response to the amount of demand.
