  1. Just a question: if people who moor in Adjacent waters have to pay a toll, do they get any dredging etc service for this? It is my understanding that although having to pay a toll some of these vessels never leave their mooring. Perhaps I am wrong.
  2. But can you spend £750,000 on a small coffee shop etc? It's got to be a LANDMARK building! Not necessarily and USEFUL building. They may use all the building materials, but not necessarily in the right order!
  3. While I'm on this earth, there can't be enough! Without opening another subject, the early closing of some public toilets and the total closure of others has caused me much discomfort in the last few years! I suspect this has nothing to do with lack of demand, rather diversion of funds.
  4. Thank you, I will pass on the info to 'er onboard. Regarding storing in garage, good idea, but where would I sleep?
  5. We have some garden furniture made of Scandinavian Redwood. The makers recommend their own waterproofing product plus teak oil. Despite many applications the table top has not fared well. The makers do not recommend covering the furniture over the winter. Does anyone have any ideas regarding treatment that can be used? I can see my wife spending many summer hours trying to keep the table as good as possible, and it is tiring for me sitting supervising!
  6. I've got to admit, very often I am only moving on because I was on a 24 hour mooring. For those of us who are fortunate enough to have our our boat, perhaps the need to rush round and see everything isn't part of the holiday experience. I enjoy the journey, the scenery, the satisfaction of a perfect mooring up () . If the mooring suits me and would be quite happy to stay longer than normally allowed. Perhaps I am just lazy!
  7. I would like to add expertise to this thread, but unfortunatley I have none, having predicted disaster for the Millenium Tent at Greenwich, and failed to see any future for the Ferris Wheel sited on the South Bank! However, having read the ideas in JMs post above, I do wonder if they are thinking of taking over the adjacent fields and building new roads. Given my track record, it probably has the chance of being an outstanding success-following the injection of a few million £s
  8. Is there some confusion between the visitor centre and BA information centre at ranworth? The information centre on the staithe was closed by BA I think. As far as I am aware, the visitor centre further round is still open? Not sure who runs it.
  9. My grandson decided to visit the Broads last weekend, I thought I would be helpful and give him the postcodes of the various places he had visited with us on the boat. I thought I would be helpful and also supply a road map to help give him perspective (what is near where etc,). He was absolutely horrified that I thought he would take a paper map book with him! I explained how I thought this would help him, but apparently, he has mobile which will "do all that" for him. I love to read a proper book rather than Kindle, anything of any importance I print off rather than reading it on a screen. Is this the end of my world as I know it? Is it time for me to shuttle of this mortal coil? I must admit we have to use a SatNav as we often travel to places unknown to us, but we never travel without a map. Surely, I can't be alone?
  10. If anyone ever sees my boat untied, even by one rope, please feel free to secure it again, the damage to mine and other boats could be expensive it it managed to drift away. Mind you, I do try to moor up with as much expertise as I have-it comes from people who keep telling me to "Get Kn......"
  11. I think this will be my last comment on thread. If I state I have no television on my boat or that I don't drink alcohol it is not because I feel superior to others, it is just part of a discussion where I happen to have some input. I do not look down my nose at those with other life styles.
  12. My comment was still bring composed when Nigel posted the above.
  13. My inclusion in this discussion, had nothing to do with irresponsible drinking nor was it intended to be judgemental regarding those who do drink. The OP stated that he is teetotal, and thought that alcohol plays a (significant) part in boating for some people. I did not take this as any suggestion that this is irresponsible drinking leading to dangerous situations. His, and hope mine, comments were quite happy for others to do as they wish. He was just describing part of his life-style and asking for people's thoughts. I was in no way suggesting that social drinking that causes no danger to others whilst boating should be discouraged.
  14. We too are teetotal. Mainly those that visit us on the boat (or at home) do not expect alcohol whilst with us, although we would have no objection to them bringing their own. We probably wouldn't buy it ourselves as we wouldn't know what to buy! It does seem when there are reports of meets etc. alcohol does seem to play a part. That is no problem to us apart from not being to reciprocate, therefore we usually don't attend (although there are other reasons -time etc). We are quite happy to eat in pubs and we often do so with those who do drink.

    Tv Licence

I was afraid if I posted about our lack of television it may seem I was trying to criticise those who have them on their boats - but like an idiot went ahead anyway. It was an attempt at humour. I do watch plenty at home especially since I retired . When on the boat our lifestyle is completely different. Maybe in the future we will have one but not yet. Everybody enjoy the Broads as you want to as long as it doesn't disturb others.

Maybe, but may be on its 3rd or 4th showing!

We've tried to get a decent picture for over 30 years................................. I suppose we should buy a television!
  18. My inclination is to do whatever is needed, but my mind tells me that I am no longer strong enough swimming to actually get in the water. My problem would be living with that if a tragedy should happen, I think many people would be thinking there must have been more "I" could do.
  19. Talk about subject creep-from overstaying on moorings, to Jukeboxes via suspected funny substances-and I used to get into trouble at school for not concentrating on the subject!
  20. Some of the above posts seem to assume that this may be an all male party. I don't fully know the details but some hire companies have recently refused to hire to these I understand. I don't know if you need to check to avoid problems at the time. It's just me being a pessimist! Really hope you all have a great time and welcome to the forum.

I was only telling my wife that the other day I'm hoping to be allowed indoors any time soon.

I thought this post had passed this stage! When someone shares something which contains their motivation for carrying out whatever they did (clumsy but I hope you know what I mean) there MAY be some justification for discussing that motivation. However, discussing a person's motivation for doing/not doing something in my opinion can become judgemental. I don't think judging one another is either a positive attitude nor helpful to the forum.
