  1. "Broads National Park to help regulate global climate change" If they mean global warming, it seems they have been very effective already!!
  2. If anyone wants to venture up the Cut, sometimes the entrance from the Mere can be a little shallow, I always approach diagonally from the middle of the Mere and leave in the same way-from the middle of the exit aiming across the Mere. I know it all sounds like a lot of bother but those who know about these things talk about the wildlife.
  3. We have an Elysian 27 and there are few similar size boats moored in the Dyke. The Nature Tour boat makes occasional visits to the bridge just before the end of navigation, and I would imagine its beam would be about the same as the Bounty. I know not everyone wants to do every mile of the Broads, and the size of boat is naturally limited by PH Bridge anyway. There are a few wild moorings before the mill, a footpath from Horsey goes along the side of the Cut and back onto the road, across which you can get to the sea and the seals! At the Mill there is a basin where I would think a 35' could turn easily. Beyond the Mill, the Cut is quite wide, although if you go to the very end, turning is limited, although possible (we and the trip boat manage it!) although as I have stated, there are no public moorings here. One problem is that weeds do grow in the cut and lack of use contributes to this. I have been told in the past that hire fleets and days boats have been told not to venture up the Cut. We do see a few visiting boats. if weeds become a problem, it's reverse gear to clear them. It is about 30 yards before the Mill where the reeds by the bank sometimes narrow the river, but it's just a matter of keeping going!
  4. I along with many others, moor on Waxham Cut. BA have cut the weeds a bit more often, as we have complained, but apparently it really needs dredging. I have to say that on the odd occasion I have mentioned the problems on forums, there hasn't been a great deal of interest, as it is "not used by many". The sign at the beginning is misleading, as there is a turning point at the mill, although the reeds tend to narrow the Cut just before the mill. Actually they push out of the way quite easily, after which there is a wild mooring, and a footpath which would take you to the beach (eventually!). Admittedly, beyond this there are no public moorings but there are a number of private boats, all liable to pay tolls. IF BA decided to close this to motor boating, how many people would protest beyond a nominal email etc? I guess will would be the first domino. What would your reaction be?
  5. When we retired and moved house, we didn't connect a phone to the landline, therefore all communications are via mobiles and email. We get enough free minutes to be able to ring back to those on landlines, and get very few nuisance calls. I do text but would rather speak direct. We get 1500 "free" minutes and never use all of them, so I suppose about four calls at least each day, six texts in or out. Hundreds of unread emails on two accounts, I can't be bothered to deal with most, I can usually see the subject and decide from that whether it needs opening or not. Texting is also bad for me owing to my lack of typing skills, please see my occasional appearances of the forum quiz for examples!
  6. I thought the bank was for bringing a boat to a dead stop!
  7. Batrabill, I think you may be accusing Paladin for posting my post! I am sure it doesn't have his usual erudition and clarity, it was just a point that occurred to simple me! I am a pensioner, I have equivalent status with other pensioners. I. however I am myself, I have somethings in common with some other pensioners, but my each of us has our own priorities and responsibilities. That which I receive is still my pension, even though I spend some of the largess on my boats, whereas others spend theirs on other things.
  8. The government in its wisdom pays me a magnificent pension every month. It chooses, with my agreement, to channel this money every month to me, via a bank account. The fact that I receive the credit via my bank, does not make me a "member" of the bank, the bank may pretend to love me and get me involved in all kinds of other stuff, we may even have interests in common, but they are really just the conduit through which I receive the means to own my boat! DEFRA uses the National Park system in order to channel its grant to BA.
  9. Why do some people seem to want to steer this thread away from its subject? This is not thread "drift" IMHO but something else less pleasant. How much poorer this forum would have been if robin took offence and hadn't kept us in touch with his last few months of activity-how many positive views and comments ? Mind you a few of us would have spent a little more time working I think!
  10. I hope this doesn't go against t&cs. There is a long statement from DrP in another place. He asks for unity in supporting the Broads in the survey. He also states that he has never, and never will support The Sandford Principle for this area.
  11. Somehow I feel there are no words to say, but I feel I ought just to say thank you for sharing on this and the previous thread. Some of us will have to go through the same experience at some point, and reading your threads again may be of some help to us when the time comes.
  12. Well done. it was good to see you all for a couple of minutes when you were mooring up at GY quay. Only sorry there was nothing we could do to help. (Must try to get the key to the Bridge control room-forum users only!!)
  13. We were hoping to leave the garage by yacht station in time to give a wave, but the crew here are slower than that of independence!
  14. Back up to 5 crew now-does that mean Robin is back on board? We are waiting for car to be serviced opposite yacht station, are there any up to date timings for GY please?
  15. Coments are made regarding the large amount of cash spent by BA taking these matters through the courts. What would be our reaction if BA sued the "little man" for the full cost of the case?
  16. I looked in via my phone, which is very old. House laptops had been purloined by others. Unfortunately although I could appear, I couldn't find any way of posting. Better luck this week perhaps.
  17. I seem to remember that there was a group of young volunteers organised by BA some years ago, I just assumed they were still going, I am sure they had a name, maybe going back to the 1990s. I didn't realise how long ago it is. As it was for younger people, it would no longer include me, but I am sure some other members may still qualify!
  18. I think (for what its worth) that those who feel strongly against NP status should continue to register their protests otherwise if in years to come, if an application became a reality, one of the arguments "for" maybe " we've been calling it a NP for the past ....years and no-one has objected".
  19. Didn't work for the guy speeding through Norwich an got a hefty fine recently!
  20. Apart from all the above sensible answers, with which I agree, finding an independent person you can trust to survey the boat. Make no assumptions regarding maintenance and upkeep because it was "owned or used by". Decide where you will want to travel on the broads and where and what type of home mooring you would like. When we bought our first boat on the Broads we didn't take it to the mooring we had reserved and paid for at Porter and Haylett until we had spent a lot of money on it and had our holiday. We didn't realise how tight the fit under Wroxham Bridge would be at some times. Fortunately we always managed, and usually got through Potter Heigham bridge at low tides (also important to us) with the help of the pilots. Best wishes for a successful buy and many happy years on the Broads.
  21. Last season we visited Catfield Staithe (if that is where the boatyard is) a number of times, and usually there were other boats moored there also. We only have an Elysian 27, not the largest of boats-does this just apply to larger craft or has it got worse? Mooring on "that" side of the bridge we it is one of the places we enjoy visiting.
  22. thank you, will record+1 and watch later.
  23. There is an extensive search for the Broads equivalent of Wigan, I understand.
