  1. Very sensible, yes the pelistors have a life of 10 years but these, like other detectors be they optical or ionisation smoke detectors can be effected by the environment they are in. Boat interiors are a pretty harsh environment, they have large temp. Changes causing condensation and cooking especially frying in such a confined space can cause ingress of dirt. As you say the cost is not huge for peace of mind. Spiders and thripps can also be a pain where ionisation detectors are fitted.
  2. Typo ftm. CO. It is the lack of the extra O molecule that makes it so deadly.
  3. Looks a very good buy for someone, especially given the age of her Honda engine. They just go on and on.
  4. Yes, the big balloon glass of wine is to be treated with respect. The lady Chairman or whatever they are called, of the local WI. When we lived in The Chilterns received a one year ban reduced to nine months for attending a Drink Drive Awareness Course. She had a small sherry at a members house then drove to the venue of their Christmas lunch where she consumed a 250ml of rich Australian Red. Stopped for clipping the curb having not been aware of a cyclist she blew way, way over. Naturally the local gutter press went to town over the matter.
  5. I have also agreed, and support their proposals. Have to say that it is tinged with sadness as my very good friend Richard (Viking 23) would have loved to have seen this. He campaigned for CO detectors on boats so hard.
  6. We would always visit the church when in Coniston to pay our respects at the resting place of Donald Campbell, a hero of mine when growing up. The drive along the Eastern lakeside, through the woods is a favourite and gives a good view of Peel Island and the other island which I think is Fir Island. I would love to walk Sharp Edge and Striding Edge one last time but would not trust my balance these days.
  7. Love the boats in the second and fourth photographs. Absolutely beautiful. Great photos Peter.
  8. One Dyane and two 2CVs for us. Picture is of my late wife Judith making lunch in Montauban, which is north of Toulouse in 1974. The Dyane was one year old and on it's second trip back from Andalusia. Having come over the 6000ft Col de Puymorens. No back seat in, full of camping gear. One of the really great things about the Dyane 6 was the spare wheel, jack etc were mounted over the engine so no unloading of luggage if you had a blowout. As an aside Judith, unknown to us when this picture was pregnant with our eldest son, William, who is now 43. Both sons William and Jeremy learnt to drive and passed their test on 2CVs.
  9. One Dyane and two 2CVs for us. Both my sons learnt to drive in them.
  10. Snetterton 24hr 2CV. just got home back tomorrow early. Saw an engine change in 8 minutes... unbelievable. Back very very eary tomorrow.
  11. We used to stay at the Dale Head Hotel, lakeside Thirlmere. (actually a very old reservoir) or The Glenridding Hotel on Ullswater.
  12. It is very easy to get emotive about these two bridges but let us not forget that British Rail had 47 years of ownership, Railtrack 8 years before Network Rail was formed as a Government owned company. The tragic Hatfield rail crash highlighted an immediate need for nearly £600 million on safety grounds and the Government buyout of Railtrack cost about £500 million. Network Rail are currently undertaking £38 billion in upgrades and new lines. At some point a solution will be found and I think that these two bridges will not be viewed in isolation but viewed against the whole of the infastructure of this line which is probably way down the list of priorities at present. The bridges are not a safety hazard, they are an inconvenience for a number of boat owners that is why I do not think these bridges will be treated as a stand alone project.
  13. Funny old world, I went to Tavern meats to get a pork pie this morning. And before I got in the car looked over Swafield Bridge. The open stretch of water that was dredged a couple of summers ago down stream of the bridge is completely overgrown again. It will have to be done again. Wish I had photographed it now.
  14. Your are correct, otherwise why on earth would you keep a 40ft TSMY twenty two miles up a river?
  15. Those party to the problem can take as much expensive Queen's Council as they like, but the legal position will be an academic exercise (which we see alot of these days ie was the Iraq War legal etc. etc.) However as I have said before you will not see the situation of Dept for Transport Vs Dept for Environment. I think a more viable argument would be to concentrate on Reedham Bridge improvements that would give boats access to the sea and Bure and forget Somerleyton. Boats based at Oulton and WRC would make their exit at lowestoft and a short sea passage between there and Yarmouth and visa versa is no hardship.
  16. I think you would get very good odds on that. Close a railway to satisfy a few boat owners and a brokerage/maintenance facility? Brooms have stopped production and I would think limited airdraft could aid their long term ambitions for their site. Closing a line in this day and age would be unthinkable. I could see it being made into a modern tramway type railway that maybe might not need such expensive bridges.
  17. Alcohol has played a part in some appalling incidents in recent years. Not being an offence as such it gets little reporting space, not like if a car was involved then headline would be along the lines of "Twice the Legal Limit"
  18. I have lost complete understanding on this forum what you can and can't do. I think you are correct. How much it effects the local ecomomy could be veiwed as somewhat subjective as moorings would soon be filled with boats that can pass under the bridges. I can however see NYA concern, many of the boats on their books are available for PX. Which means they must be financing and paying interest on them. They really do need to be able to get out, sell them. Given the sort of money involved in that class of boats they probably have legal charges against their stock by their bankers and prospects will not wish to go as far as Reedham and back when committing to that type of investment.
  19. There is a thread elsewhere that is interesting. Perhaps it would be possible for the member who has produced the report from BA could post it here as well.
  20. I agree, should be left to the song of the paddle.
  21. I had a shooting discipline deleted from Griff's game shooting thread. I had no idea why until I saw the word in an Urban American Dictionary. Certainly I have never heard of it over here as obscene.
  22. This is her preparing for her role in Swallows and Amazons. It really does help if your parental home in The Cotswolds has it's own lake.
  23. This is the trailer put together for Sophie Neville's book. I think it is insight into film making 44 years ago https://www.imdb.com/videoplayer/vi3400510489
  24. Sophie Neville's " The Secrets of Filming Swallows and Amazons" is an interesting read. Published in 2011 it is available on Kindle.
