  1. All Corvids tend to flock in Autumn, along with their "this years" young. Often different species flock together. The Jackdaw has few enemies unlike the Carrion Crow, Magpie and Jay, who are not liked for their appetite for eggs and chicks.
  2. Mum's was white. I don't think she ever really forgave me even though it was replaced with an identical car except the seats were black not red. She was still mentioning it 20 years later. After the car was written off I tried to get my father to replace it with a GT6 mk2 but he said that I had done enough damage in the Vitesse. Anyway Dad was not a bad old stick, he bought this for me for passing my A levels. We must have been down the pub as Judith is driving in one shot. We got engaged in Jan 69 on Judiths eighteenth and drove the Spitfire to Callafell for our hols that summer.
  3. I had 6 hours intensive and passed three days after my 17th birthday, I also had been driving around the farm since being about 12 in my 100E Anglia, little Massey Grey and a Fordson Major. I was the opposite of SwanR. I had all the confidence in the World in my driving ability. That is until three months later when I stuffed Mum's brand new Vitesse 2.0 litre convertible into a grass bank only 200 yds from home, bent the chassis and wrote it off. Taught me a valuable lesson.
  4. There is a Steam Boat Association of Great Britain. A sub-contractor of the company I worked for had a magnificent Edwardian Steam Launch which he kept near Sonning. He told me that the biggest drawback was his insurance insisting on regular boiler strip down and inspection that was very expensive. How Steam fits into BSS? Does anyone know?
  5. Kingfisher666. There is a book written by a much respected writer and journalist by the name of Ian Mitchell called "Isles of the West" . As the name suggests it is a study of Scotlands Western Isles that he travels in his Corribee. It is available on kindle or paperback, I would recommend it to everyone who thinks the RSBP can do no wrong.
  6. Those steering wheels, when in a smash then turned into an Assegai, often bringing about the demise of the unfortunate driver.
  7. And Hickling could be one great Superyacht marina with a fast Cat service to Holland.
  8. As seas warm so they expand. The water takes up more space adding to rising sea levels.
  9. Looks very like a Fairey Duckling to me. The smallest of a wonderful range of autoclave finished boats covering sailing dinghies to offshore power boat racers, with the Alalanta cruising yacht range stuck in the middle. My favourite was the Albacore from the pen of Uffa Fox, as indeed was the Duckling. Had a holiday in the South of France on an Atalanta before we had children, great holiday but very hot down below. We sailed from La Lavandou to Ile du Levant, Port Cros and Ile d'Hyeres. Back then that coast was absolute magic. Brings a tear to the eye thinking of us so young with not a care in the World
  10. I do tend to agree with MM re Flood Alleviaton. Perhaps it is a combination of higher river banks funnelling water up the system and lack of dredging not letting it out again. Remember the old moorings at Fleet Dyke? They were always under water. How Hill was raised considerably. Certainly over the last 15 years I have noticed a difference in the tidal flow at Ludham Bridge which used to be notorius for flooding over the fields. Whether as has been suggested "Plough Dredging" would work I don't know. The river can certainly get a move on during the ebb so it should. However then there is the question of where it ends up? A Bar at the entrance to the Harbour? So back to the Backhoe dredger and spoil to get rid of.
  11. 55 years ago. Finding someone who was old enough to take proper notice of the tidal range and confirm yey or ney could prove difficult.
  12. It would not be just down to the BA of course. Any "Cure" would have to go to consultation and apart from objections from the public, Natural England, NWT, RSPB, National Trust and Uncle Tom Cobbly would all have a say. It is a non starter. Dredging is the only hope in my opinion as Griff says.
  13. As I said, I have always thought 6ft 8ins until 5 or 6 years ago when the BA tables suddenly stated 6ft 6ins.
  14. I see what you mean. I have just looked at Topsail Brokers listings, there are a shed load of river cruisers for sale and at not a lot of money.
  15. The problem is you either need an awful lot of time on your hands and the skills required for a full restoration or very, very deep pockets. Sadly commodities possessed by just a few these days. The line twix "Full Restoration" and "New Build" can at times be very thin and faint.
  16. I have always thought that, when "Bypass Channel" has been mooted. The constriction caused by the bridge must hold a lot of water back in Hickling. I am told that Natural Hydrodynamics is a very complex subject and that there are many cases of what appears a simple cure can make maters worse for no apparent reason. There has been controversy, for example in Poole, where the increased dredging of the shipping approach channel was said to improve depth in the rest of the harbour. Many of the sailing clubs are saying the reverse is true.
  17. They are usually in a very bright colour that changes yearly so if you receive one and it looks familiar look at the dates.
  18. I remember 6ft 8ins being quoted by BA and that reduced to 6ft 6ins about 6 years ago never seen 7ft 6ins. Ex-Pilot where are you?
  19. If it were mine, I would push the "Luxury for Two" image. Loads of "both at work, no kids" couples would not blink at the price.
  20. Could someone tell me what class "Cuckoo" is I thought she may be some form of "A Rater" but I can't find her name on their register. Her bow is like a "Star" but LOA is too great. Rig too high for a "Punt" maybe I am being trickedbecause she is under covers. covers.
  21. Details herewith, not Maud on picture!

    Barnes Deal

That is the hotel and travel business and boats are really no different. If you want best choice or to be first with a new model be it car, phone, tablet etc you pay top dollar wait and you wil pay less. Last minute bookings are OK but often there is little choice.
  23. I rather liked this. In modern stained glass.
