  1. Having been a bit incommunicado ddue to a training course in Leeds I will give you my take on this. Suppose someone organised an informal gathering here, with a sign up thread, then went to the venue and booked moorings under the auspices of the NBN, is went in and said to the owner, I would like to book 10 berths for an informal NBN meet. Now the meet happens, 7 people turn up and pay their mooring fee to the organiser, who pays the mooring owner. Ah but says the owner, you need to pay for the 10 moorings you booked. Organiser comes back with, but only 7 of us moored there and will only pay for those 7. As the mooring was booked under the auspices of the NBN, and organised on a thread on the forum, we ( the NBN committee) now become liable for those unpaid fees. So when it says organised through or under the auspices of, that means if someone starts a thread for booking moorings here, then uses that to book with the mooring owner, then we have a liability. If on the other hand they say, I will be at a place, anyone want to meet me, then people sort their moorings out themselves, no problem. And remember, that's just the moorings side of it, anything else that uses the name of the forum for booking or paying or just organising, brings a liability to the forum. The team need to be able to control these risks and liabilities. Thus for organised (formal or informal) events that are organised here, or use the forum name in any way, we have to retain control, is we need to know who is doing the work on our behalf, and that they are going to do it in a manner that is responsible and safe. We have risk assessments, we put in place, covering everything we can perceive as a risk, including people falling into the water after drinking a pint too many, maybe tug of war wasn't the best example, but Man overboard is a serious incident, so if we don't have a process in place, via a risk assessment, we could be held liable. Now Tim will probably come along and highlight all the points I have got wrong, but the above is my understanding of the whys and wherefores.
  2. The ones I hire generally are.
  3. Well here are the faceplates, printed with hopefully enough thread to allow them to accurately seat on the lathe.
  4. Ian to be fair, the only two that havent are well known to us (well me anyway)
  5. when I was little we went to Scotland to loch Lomond, all I can really remember was the salt in the porridge.
  6. OK, I have looked for my faceplate, but from memory, it wont help as the wooden part is too small for the fixing points on the faceplate, so plan number 2 goes into effect, I need something to hold the wood part, so I have the solution, I have designed a faceplate in CAD, and 3d Printed it out, unfortunately I dont have the tap that corresponds to the lathe spindle so I will just have to reprint this with the correct thread already set on it, simple - so I will have printed a 50mm dia lathe faceplate fo fix the blocks to to turn the ships wheel parts. so now you can see some of the processes that go into some parts of the model, where a part has to be fabricated to enable another part to be made, next to decide which lathe to set up this part on.
  7. ah yes, it was 2018 that was cancelled, and yes we said that it was because we were unable to get a member of the team to the event, I seem to recall that we had a team member who had been organising everything who dropped out leaving nobody to organise the event, and that there were only a few people signed up to it, who subsequently decided not to attend anyway leaving poor MM on his tod. I know I for one cant get to many more events than the spring one at present, that is because if I do the spring event, the wooden boat show and lads week, that the majority of my annual leave used up for the year. though this may change in future.
  8. that would have been at least 2 years ago as we didnt even plan a southern meet last year
  9. I an not an antques dealer, but I do like buying old stuff and making it useful again, I once bought a mutilated spinning wheel at a boot fair, and removed the lamp that had been fitted to the top, repaired the flyer, made new bobbins and redid the drive band, just to get it back to a useable condition. this weekend just gone I picked up another, fortunately rescuing it before it was mutilated, it was sold to me as 'it would look nice in your living room if you put a lamp on top and made it into a nice floor lamp' , a new drive belt made and it was back to fully functional. I also pick up old tools (wooden planes etc) and clean them up, sharpen them up and put them back to use, some of those old tools hold a far better edge than the modern equivalent and still work nicely given the right treatment.
  10. we even put up with Jays Jokes, now how many places would allow those.
  11. Grendel / Jayne / 1 / Friday Y / saturday Y
  12. There are a lot of specialised forums that wont allow off topic chat at all, so here we have the one area where off topic is allowed, and yes while you can ignore a topic if you wish, think of the poor moderation team that have to wade through every post however trivial, just in case. and here I must thank all the moderator team for the hard work they do keeping the forum the nice friendly welcoming place it is.
  13. I think so, but you seem to have missed out several trips to the pub between them.
  14. forum meet is 15, 16, 17th May weekend. may bank holiday has been moved by the government back by 4 days to 8th of may to coincide with the 75th anniversary of VE day, so whether the dates for the various races have been adjusted to the new bank holiday dates I dont know. late may bank holiday is 25th May, and from above 3RR is 30th 31st May
  15. To be Fair Mike, this post is in the non broads related area, and its clear what the subject matter is if you didnt want to read it, plus it is throwing up several new youtube channels for us to watch, instead of watching TV, Since before christmas, today was the first day i watched tv as i had finished the binge watch of a new (to me) youtube channel, i generally only watch the talking pictures channel on tv though.
  16. If I use a single piece I will have two points where there are short grain , where the wood can split, by using 4 pieces cut at 45 degrees, the short grain is avoided as the grain runs around the piece, the end of the wood will be turned to size, half way through the wood, then the wheel can be drilled and assembled, then cut to thickness, as it will be stronger with the spokes in place.
  17. Today i am working two different methods to make the ships wheel, the easy method is to 3d print the wheel, the other way involves gluing 4 blocks of teak together, then it will be a matter of putting it on the lathe and turning the wood for the rim, then the boss, and then adding the spokes, this will also mean cutting a brass circle to make the brass parts, this is the hard way, i have already done the easy way, but i still feel the hard way will give greater satisfaction.
  18. Just a thought, indeed a purely hypothetical question, if JP were told that he could have his real BNP but with one proviso, he had to persuade JM, I wonder what he'd say?
  19. Polly, I will have you know that my house is just full of wonderful things (not junk)
  20. just a gentle reminder that the BroadsAuthority in the persona of Tom, is a member and that all of the normal rules apply that protect individual members from being attacked or baited by other members apply. This of course should not stop any comments regarding the authority in general terms (as we are used to from both sides of the fence), but when these comments are directed at a member (Tom specifically) then myself (with my size 14's) and the rest of the moderator team may well step in if we feel you have gone too far. Tom has made it clear that if he feels that a question will cause either himself or the authority grief if answered, then he wont answer it, so please leave it there and dont keep pushing. Now can we get back to the great sign scandal debate, as clearly we have views that range from one extreme to the other, and its only by discussion that we can come to a consensus as to whether these are good for the broads, bad for the broads or make no difference. So are the signs merely marketing, or something more sinister as alluded to by several members, or merely a nothing as some other members see them?
  21. surely to be accurate and obtain an answer the question should be does Acle fall within the boundaries of the area of the Broads that can be referred to as a National Park for marketing purposes. otherwise you are in reality asking a question that has several possible answers, ie is Acle within the boundaries of the Broads Authority, while at the same time asking if the Authority is referring to that area as a National Park. thus the question is a bit of a trick question, because whichever way it is answered, the inference is that the Broads is a National Park, or it is implied that Acle (whether it is or isnt in the area governed by the authority) is not in a National Park. so an answer of No can be taken either way depending upon the viewpoint of the questioner.
  22. They are probably following MM's advice and keeping quiet, as whichever answer they give will have its own comeback.
  23. A fact I can concur with, even now when faced with a moderation decision, i tend to think to myself, how would Ian have handled this, i still aspire to the skills he had in moderating, despite all the practice some people have given me.
  24. probably due to the gravity of the situation (ie at ground level)
  25. oh I dont know, kamikaze walls leaping out and tripping you - yep, entertainment.
