  1. Thoughts and prayers are with you Tim
  2. Never actually met Iain but I have had much contact with him by messages and emails. Always friendly and willing to offer support to others. God bless you Iain you will be be so sadly missed. Thoughts and prayers are with the family.
  3. Must make some enquiries about this. I work for a bus company although I no longer drive buses. This is the first i have heard about permits to board the bus with a mobility scooter. In my opinion some of the giant size prams/pushchairs these days are more of a hazard. Most of our vehicles are low floor and have wheelchair ramps available. There is also designated space for wheel chair user.
  4. 1333 would have been during the second war of scotish independance, I think!. Maybe the post was a veiled reference to a possible second referendum on the same issue.
  5. Yes Iian There was also a rule in our area that you had to live at least 2 miles away to be permitted to cycle to school.
  6. I was in the South at the time Iain and it was still a case of going to school in the dark. Of course you have to take into consideration that the school day was a lot longer back then. For us the school day stated at 0845 and did not finish untill 4pm That was just the time at school there was still the walk there and back. Thses days, certainnly round here, most of the schools finish around 3pm and some even earlier.
  7. Not that I actually remember of course but I think the practice of putting the clocks forward in the UK as a daylight saving measure actually started during the Great war of 1914-18. with double summertime, 2 hours forward, existing during some of WW2. However I remember clearly that in 1968 the practice stopped in the UK for 3 years as an experiment and we adopted what was known as British Standard time. It all changed back acgain in 1971 and has continued that way since.despite regular debates on the subject.
  8. Oh! You were talking about wind, Peter. And all the time I had been under the impression that sailing boats run on Alcohol in various forms. Main source of this information "The art of coarse sailng"
  9. Great picture Peter. I have to admit that when i saw the title of this thread that my mind was thinking of a Clyde Puffer. As in "The Vital Spark" and "Para Handy". Nice little boat though. Must be great to own something like that and what a great way to travel the rivers.
  10. As Polly has already said. Why do they have to mess about with a classic story and turn it into the usual sort of trash that now fills our TV Screens. I find the renaming of Titty as Tatty rather silly but I guess that is the stupid political correctness these days. However there is no need at all to add nonsense such as secret agents and russian spies. Maybe this is the usual obsession with the secret history of Arthur Ransome. Not really a secret though as Ransomes involvement with the British government and with some of the leaders of the Russian Revolution is well documented. The BBC did make a Swallows and Amazons series which was broadcast in 1960. (Arthur Ransome himself did not like the way this was portrayed) However it did stick reasonably to the story line but Titty in this 1960 series had been renamed Kitty. I have copies of both the 1973 Swallows and Amazons film and the TV Series of Coot Club and the big Six. Arthur
  11. Earn??????? I would like to see some of todays so called star players up against the great players of the 50's and 60's When the game was played with a good old fashioned ball and proper boots. And many players still had a day job as well. England did well in 1966.playing proper football. Can't find any interest in the game these days.
  12. Got there ok Peter but I must admit that I did guess the answer to the third question.
  13. Says it all Peter You can could cover the Broads with ugly signage and goodness knows what else. The main problem is that all require the use of the brain and common sense. No matter if there is a great big sign saying this is Wroxham Brdige or not. It does not take much intelligence to realise that if the height indicated in the cockpit is 7 ft something and the bridge gauge shows something less than tha then the boat is likely not to fit. I guess the waterways are getting a bit like the roads. Start the engine then dis-engage brain.
  14. My thoughts and prayers are with you Eric. Take Care
  15. Never mind "All's well that ends well"
  16. Hi iain, I never did shakespeare at all at school. However, I guess the other Bard is more relevant to you. Arthur
  17. To quote from "The Scottish Play" Iain. "Macbeth shall never vanquished be until Great Birnam Wood to high Dunsinane Hill Shall come against him."
  18. Yes Pauline, thereby hangs a tale. I did like the Maurice Mynah variation on a play about a cigar? "His wit is as thick as Tewkesbury mustard" (Henry iv Act 2. if you must know)
  19. Perhaps you should all "Exit, Pursued by a bear".
  20. Totally agree with you about the handover at Eastwood Whelpton Griff. Only hired from them a couple of times but I will defintely go with them again if I ever get back to the Broads. Very comprehensive handover with everything explained very clearly and happy to answer any questions. I was reasonably confident in being able to sail the yacht even though I was single handed. However I was not quite sure how the A Frame arrangement that the boat had for raising and lowering the mast worked. They took the time to go through the procedure with me which I very much appreciated. I think the yacht you hired Giff may have been Spindrift. Arthur
  21. Thanks Iain, Looks really good at the moment
  22. I am 100% in agreement with that opinion Poppy.
  23. Just had a quick look at this on Iplayer. Skipping through all the padding it did not take long. As has been said typical tv programme these days, all presenters and no content. Not impressed. Think you are right about the speed limits Iain. I seem to remember them much the same from the 1970's. Diffiult to judge speed in the archive footage. This would have originally been on cine film and TV often show it at a faster frame rate than the original speed. I think the media types think it adds effect. Much the same way as perfectly good quality historic film often has the appearance of scratches artifically added because the progrmme makers think its clever.
  24. Let's hope they do not see this as an opportunity to remove all the piling in the dyke and promote reed growth like the proposed ideas at upton. Seriously though this could be a real disaster. Hope it can be sorted quickly
  25. Felt just the same as you when I heard this story on the news this evening. I hate the way people like this risk the lives of others that go to their aid and then seem to have complete disregard. It is certainly not funny.
