  1. I looked at this thread several days late but the issue about diesel for heating or making the engine run interested me as WR has no hot water or heating so I shouldn't pay the extra tax when buying fuel!! Thanks for this...
  2. A few years ago one of my brother's in his guise as an Editor of a Railway Engineering Magazine was given a guided tour of all FOUR swing bridges to enable him to write an article for the Magazine, I was seriously envious!

    Wind

Social media is showing some pretty high Broadland tides today as well. Earlier Reedham Ferry was closed and the height under Potter was put at 4' 10"
  4. I have just watched Michael Portillo on his train journeys visit Wroxham and sailing on Olive briefly tonight
  5. I suppose WR being part of the great canal program and visible in several shots and knowing that a lot of the shots were taken from WR. That has to be a highlight of 2017 plus daughter 1 getting married!
  6. Happy New Year and happy and safe boating to everyone wherever you are and as always Grace is spot on with her sentiments. I have THE VISITOR at the moment so have spent the afternoon in the kitchen not with wine glass but doing a seriously large batch of ironing which for some reason took even longer than usual. Have to do a taxi-ing run shortly hence the late of refreshment! Liz and Water Rail (who is about to enter her 85th year if my calculations are correct?)
  7. Yes we managed to moor up there is August 2016!!! The only thing to be mindful of is the mosquitos and the fact that people can moor up the bank a bit further up and to our surprise some 'explorers' with dog came along the bank through the reeds bed to watch up the path!
  8. Did anyone watch the home movies of Morecombe and Wise last night on BBC2. Included brief footage of Eric on the Broads with family and friends towards the end of the programme. Think they were at Yarmouth Yacht Station as you could see the old railway bridge and then on the lower Bure........... I was led to believe some modern day filming was undertaken with the family but unless there are more programmes to follow, it hit the cutting room!

    My Day

Definitely because the other photo I was sent was one of me actually timekeeping - I tended to do 3 RRs timekeeping in the early hours before Fred Turner woke up at a sensible hour and came over to continue the task.

    My Day

Minding my own business this photo was sent to me by the son (and seriously old crewing friend) who's father died last week. Vaughan and Labrador may remember him but he took my wedding photos. This is me possibly 1978 3RRs race. Scary!
  13. Here here, this bickering is 'annoying' me and its not what this forum is about. It's not fair on the mods or those that don't wish to be mods but know when it's going out of line...
  14. I looked out the window at the snow and suddenly realised that it was 2 x bins recycling morning. That was fun and they arrived within 30 minutes .............. all evidence of Christmas festivities removed!
  15. Just like Mr & Mrs Nog's winter tales, we never have enough of winter stories. Note I never finished my September tale and I doubt I ever will. Keep the pictures coming. Liz
  16. Thank you! She will look even more stunning after her winter make over..............
  17. I did my best - not 100% sure where the 1 point came from, possibly kindness :) Well done everyone else and thanks to SteveO for organising the quiz
  18. Ooops a bit early but worked okay
  19. Lovely. When I was very young, on a Saturday morning I would get into my parents bed and ask my father for broads holiday stories. My favorite request was Christmas on the broads with Father Christmas coming down the steps of the front hatch. Bear in mind this was in the late 50s when mod cons and heating wasn't supplied but I still loved the idea of Christmas on the Broads. Not sure now on WR as still no mod cons! Liz
  20. I should clarify I meant swearing in general not swearing directed at children which I also agree should never happen

    My Day

This wouldn't be an unusual day perhaps but put into the context that by this time next Monday, all the presents should be open and some of us will be feeling very full, and some may be feeling a 'bit sleepy.' So my day started with the most important thing you do 7 days before Christmas, paint the banisters and the hand rails up to the loft room. Yes we have had all year to do the touching up but it has to be done before Christmas! Honest. Then whilst the other half goes for one of his Christmas lunches, I decide to put all the recently purchased bird food into tins in the shed. We have an unwelcome guest that eats through plastic containers. On my second trip to the shed, I spy a baby hedgehog. This is the second one we have found in a few weeks (they said there are usually two) so I ring the local vet that takes them in before they are sent to a refuge and I hot foot in my car over to the next village. I have to explain to the kind receptionist that when I found it - it was eating a dead bird! And unfortunately when I picked it up with gloves on, the bird came with the hedgehog. The receptionist looks under the newspaper and says 'oh I see but at least it was eating something' - she very kindly threw the additional rubbish away for me when handing back my container. After lunch, I decide to do my next task, which is to wrap up all the Christmas presents..... bear in mind it is still 7 days away, this is quite a remarkable achievement (except I still haven't got anything for daughter 3!) but only after a few presents, I run out of wrapping paper and where is the wrapping paper. I believe it is in the loft room, which requires passing the wet hand rails :( - that put paid to that. Then I spy two Ring-necked Parakeets on my bird feeders - the cats can't be bothered so I am off down the garden telling them to 'go away!' (several times) I then get the text to say that his lordship is in need of my taxi services and with confirmation that the wrapping paper is indeed in the loft room, I carefully go up the stairs to retrieve it. I also sell something on Ebay, get all the presents wrapped and finally find time to cook my supper (someone else isn't in need of supper!) That was my day plus a few other things but not important to mention! Happy Christmas!
  22. And then the children just copy their parents as heard whilst walking to work one morning. Protesting child aged max 6 saying to parent "I don't want to go to bl**dy school" - Not that offensive if an adult but for such a young child to say.....
  23. I don't think so but by putting an outboard on, I suspect you would have to pay a higher toll? My brother used to pay a higher toll on the white boat simply so he could put the outboard on perhaps twice a year to move it from A to B. I deemed this ridiculous and have always managed to get the white boat towed! Likewise my little sailing dinghy which is strictly speaking only a rowing dinghy used to pay a higher toll but since my brother removed bits the rudder fitted onto to make it easier to use clean his boat from the dinghy I told the BA it was no longer a sailing dinghy and as result reduced the toll I paid....
