  1. Actually the priority bit in the New Highway code has always existed on the broads, Simplifying it a bit.. Motorboats give way to sailors, and rowing boats, Sailors give way to rowing boats.. Vessels going across the rivers have to give way to those going along the rivers..

  7. Always used a depth sounder on every boat I had except the boat I have now.. What is the depth sounder? It says "we've run aground again" what is the depth sounder? The Crew... Why not on the current sailing boat?? It's a single hander...

    Roadworks 2022

Went through there this morning at about 06:15, BIg hole now with bracing to stop it collapsing in.. Maybe they're making another Broad...
  9. Paddle boarders I don't have a problem with, you can see them, though paddling through the middle of a regatta in the middle of a river isn't the best Idea. Which is why on rescue boat duties I go and ask them to stick to the bank. I've not had a refusal once I've told them why.. Horning sailing club even has a paddle boarders section. What is worse are swimmers, swimming down the river Towing a little orange float, the float is hard enough to see, let alone someone wearing all black wetsuit in front of it. As for rule changes No I'm not expecting any ... But what we do get is new "interpretations" of what is written in law..

  12. September to November it's quieter on all the broads. the kids have gone back to school. Just avoid half term. There are a lot more places to go on the northern, rather than the southern broads. Note, if you want to go to GY, stop at Acle and get the bus or train. The river south east of Stokesby is fairly boring, and more importantly mooring on the Broads Authority moorings at GY is a real handful except at high or low tide as the current is very strong there. Although I've only used Martham boats for 3 separate one night stays, I'm highly impressed with them, they have everything I want..

  14. I have a big Head.. yeah You Knew that... Specs only just reach over my ears anyway (the cheap ones) putting two sets on is not an option. , so I use a magnifier lamp like Grendal's or... https://www.amazon.co.uk/Headband-Magnifier-Fozela-Head-mounted-Magnifications/dp/B01MG7IT6I/ref=asc_df_B01MG7IT6I?tag=bingshoppinga-21&linkCode=df0&hvadid=80745442135209&hvnetw=o&hvqmt=e&hvbmt=be&hvdev=c&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=&hvtargid=pla-4584345017056572&psc=1 Mine's not that brand but it's extremely similar..

    My Day

My day, My Week, I'd like to talk about paint...... OK moderators, this on a sailing boat not a motor cruiser.. Well I've had a disaster.. The last coat of paint I put on Blue Moon's hull, has not gone hard after several weeks and in places has not stuck on properly.. So the decision was to strip it off and start again. My fault ? Or the manufacturer? It's not a well known brand of marine paint I used, it is much cheaper than say international paints. Anyway I've bought a can of Toplac to replace it with, it's a stronger light blue than I wanted. (squall blue) but I'm not messing with it, it will be applied as per the instructions. So the decision was to strip the soft paint off and start again. First I tried a hot air gun and scraper.. 40mph winds from the warm south defeated that.. Then I tried a sander with conventional paper... Paper clogged up almost instantly Then I tried non clog sanding mesh.. it clogged up instantly. So at this point I got aggressive, and angle grinder With a scotch bright sanding pad.. That worked , I cleared the hull of the soft paint in one day, not too many extra deep scrapes and none through the glassfibre, just through the hull smoothing filler. (The hull is a glassfibre / plywood/ glassfibre sandwich). I looked like a snowman after that.. The next day the scrapes were filled. After a day off due to rain , the hull was sanded using the conventional sand paper.. lots of it.. I looked like a snowman after that.. The next day, the whole hull was given a coat of VCtar2, with second coats on the leading edge of the keel and rudder.. unfortunately I've run out of VCtar2, and the chandler's closed until Wednesday. I want to put another coat of VCtar2 below the waterline.. So today the plastic covers have gone back on, we have a reversal in weather forecast from Wednesday, cold freezing weather from the north.. As it is I couldn't continue to work on the hull this week, towards the end of working on the boat my left knee gave way, in great pain, it did it again late yesterday evening, and again this morning trying to come downstairs..
  16. Ye here we go again road works already.. Usual place Wroxham, on the Norwich road, just up slope of the Loynes car park.. Appears to be sewage / drainage works there's a big pump there.. Traffic lioght controlled.
  17. The winds switching to the north unfortunately water levels will rise for the next few days..

    Boat Hooks

Never bought a boat hook, picked up several out of the rivers though.. I've had the tell off several tourists for waving boat hooks at sailing boats. One it's downright dangerous Two it can cause serious damage to boat or person. Three, it can get hooked up on our ropes and pull them in.
  19. Holidays not over yet... So you can fill in your 3RR forms. Yep visit 3rr.uk to get all the latest information and entry forms. Entries are open.
  20. To me it's a blast from the past, a lot of the equipment there isn't like what I worked on, it is the equipment I touched and worked on...
  21. Well it's around a year to go before I retire.. I'll be about 65.. My sister who is 3 years younger than me has decided to retire, when they stop her working from home.. I think there'll be a lot of that... I could go on my birthday, about Christmas, or at the end of February, the February pay packet includes the annual bonus.. not that it's a huge amount.. I'll make the final decision about September.. What will I do when retired? There's a lot of stuff to do around the house and garden. Sail more, Probably volunteer at the Radar museum. Oh and I think somehow from 2023 I'll be chairman of the model railway club..
  22. What changed my direction was electronic training kits. At Inverness high school I'd finish SCE O grades, for the year but we still had a couple of weeks left. The school had some electronic kits delivered but had never used them. So they have a couple of us the kits to try . They were individual electronic components in plastic blocks that you plugged together on a special board.. and you could make radio transmitters, receivers, frequency generators. Etc. So I got interested.. I remember the model engineering show and went a couple of times in the mid 70s. Sadly most of the time I've lived too far away.. I note it appears to have moved to Ally pally .. Sadly the dinghy show has just moved from Ally Pally, to Farnborough, adding another hour each way to the journey, making it a very long day to attend...
  23. Well I'm currently moving the main workshop from one shed to a partitioned off half the garage. If all the equipment were in one place.. Heater... radio.. Pillar drill, table saw, band saw, wood lathe, bench grinder. Hand power tools. Various drills battery and mains power, jig saw, half sheet sander, palm sander, belt sander, planer, Angle grinder, reciprocating saw, Tile cutter, Ancient hoover Non power tools, Saws, planes, many chisels, hammers, Mallets... Dustpan and brush.. 300kg max load hand hoist to lift heavy stuff on and off the work bench.. last item move, a 180kg keel I'd made for the sailing boat.. Currently on the bench is a jib club for the sailing boat. With various other boat bits scattered around getting coats of varnish. The boat is outside, the temporary marquee tent having been taken down due to winter gales, the boat is wrapped up in plastic while I work on removable items.. Model railway workshop. Well that's one end of the model railway shed, in the U of track as it will head back the other way. As yet not properly set up, most of the tools live in a tool box that travels between home and Broadland Model Railway Club.. fridge, kettle... Tools for mechanical stuff. Spanner sets. Socket sets, plumbing tools, farmers and trolly jack scattered between sheds Landrover and the other half of the garage. One ton chain hoist, mostly used for lifting boat on / off trailer. , But can be used to lift lawnmower onto trestles or trailers up onto blocks etc .. Electronic tools. Hand held and bench dmms, oscilloscope, power supplies, signal generator, scattered around the place. Will eventually share the model railway work bench.. Gardening, lawnmower, hedge trimmer, chainsaw, plus the usual gardening hand tools. The oddities being a very large iron bound fencing mallet, and a dydle inherited from Harry Nudd.. I'd like to get.. A small metal lathe, then either a laser cutter or 3d printer..
