  1. I don't think you'll get a broads boat up the river to Figheldean.. The Bishops mill's in the way.. An Aunt lived just down from there in the grounds of Salisbury cathedral, a house right on the riverbank.
  2. Welcome to the site from someone who used to live in Wiltshire, I've still got relatives in Ludgershall and the other side of the county near Longleat (close enough to hear the Lions roar). My only recommendation on boat's is to get one low enough to get under the bridges, Above Potter and Hoveton are some of the best parts of the Broads..

    My Day

Congratulations to Roger Hannant with crew William Symonds who won the Tri Icycle in a Yeoman Keel boat..

    My Day

Well if you're out on the water the Tri Icycle will have started. Due to the wind being in an awkward direction the start was moved to the water works from 11:00 onwards. 48entries this year's which is very good.. from an OK dinghy up to a 40ft broads cruiser..
  5. I've always heard it pronounced Burh .. no ruh
  6. just for fun, I think water levels are going back up, with the switch to Northerly gales flood warnings all along the coast... https://check-for-flooding.service.gov.uk/alerts-and-warnings?v=map&lyr=mv,ts,tw,ta&ext=1.037302,52.593732,1.803779,52.796178&fid=flood.054WACDV2B

    Lost Pub

There was a 4th pub in Horning the Half Moon, but long gone by 1972. "looking from the river garden to the right" sounds very like the Ferry . This site might help. https://www.norfolkpubs.co.uk/norfolkh/horning/hornhm.htm
  8. I have reed and plaster ceilings and one small room still has reed and plaster to brick walls. Back in the early 80's the previous owners removed most of the the reed and plaster and replaced in with modern cements along with an injected damp proof course, which seems to be working.. As for insulation it will have to go on the outside the rooms are small enough as it is..
  9. We may not have had easterlies but we have had northerlies until Sunday when it switched round to the south that kept the water high. The forecast for the rest of the week is south and west except for Thursday night Friday morning. So the levels should drop this week..
  10. Since that's online only this year hopefully I can fast forward, bypass or otherwise avoid him.
  11. There's a ridge of water just above the bridges caused by the back pressure from the bridge supports.. They just can't cope the current against them and going up hill..

    Sailing Zoe

When she's not out on hire on the broads somewhere, her home boat yard is Martham Developments boat yard.. see here https://www.marthamboats.com/hire/yachts/35-zoe
  14. Well I did call it a "subject" to carry on the train of thought...
  15. yep, That's what it looks like from the photo I've just seen.. Eight on board would be a tight fit, 8 times UK average 76kg per person, that's 608kg. I suspect the boat may well have been overloaded.. Yhough that may not be the cause of them taking on water, it certainly won't have helped.
  16. going back to the original subject, yesterday fuel at Blue Boar tescos, Roy's actually in Wroxham, Wayford Bridge , and Tesco's Stalham.. Though It's took forever to fuel my land rover, I suspect they've turned the fuel pressure down..
  17. There are comments on the Hemsby lifeboat page, The first boat on the scene, a private boat, couldn't get close enough to take anyone off, which suggests it really was stuffed into the bank. A later comment is the boat has been recovered and has little visible damage..

    2022 Plans

2022 no holidays for us, as in go somewhere, all time off is spoken for, However.. My sailing boat should finally be finished, so sailing every Sunday instead of working on it, plus Monday 18th Apr Down river race On duty for the 3 Rivers Race 28-28 May. Horning regatta week 30th July to 5th August, Sept - Oct sometime, the dinghy weekend.. and at the end of the year I retire.. So we can have some time going elsewhere in 2023
  19. Probably in the seventies, when everything started moving down market to the lowest common denominator. You're not allow to "better yourself" anymore, the lowest dumbest advert / Programme is where "it's at" now..
  20. Lorries, lorries / buses / delivery vans as well. The most polluted roads in Norwich are where the buses run, particularly round the bottom of the castle where cars do not run..
  21. I certainly remember, the lunch time charge from the carriage Works across the road to the pubs the other side.. They just poured out of the works not looking at the traffic just aiming to get a pint or two or three in lunch hour
  22. one thing I think people are missing is the transmission losses of hydraulic or conventional gears, This is quite substantial especially with hydraulics.. an electric motor does not have to be anywhere near the power of a diesel.. With hydrualic power you could be losing up to 30%. A mechanical gear box loses less but has frictional losses and sometimes it's own oil pump which uses power.
  23. Dark windows are quite see through from the outside when the lights are on....
