  1. When I first stated holidaying on the broads with my parents in the late 60s / 70s we spent a lot of time on the Southern Broads and used the Waveney House Hotel in Beccles quite a lot. At that time you could moor about 4 / 5 boats outside the hotel. There was a notice on the moorings which stated No mooring without permission. You had to personally ask the owner, Mr Brumfitt, if you could moor there. Once you had assured him you would be using the hotel he would have a quick look at you before giving his answer. Further up river from there was the Geldeston Lock House. At that time it didn’t have a proper Bar / Serving area, the drinks used to appear from out the back. It was run by a well known character called Susan. After you had consumed a couple of drinks she would tell you you had had enough. Time to move on to Geldeston Wherry, in the village, where you could drink all afternoon. (Don’t forget, in those days pubs used to close between 2.30pm and 6.00pm.) I have very fond memories of my early days on the broads. They were the good old days.
  2. I remember the Buck in the 70s when a blind man used to play the piano in the bar on a Saturday night. The same man also played in the Ship at Reedham.
  3. Showing my age now, I remember it. It was a Lacons pub / hotel, opposite Oulton broad north station.
  4. Part of the current refurbishment is the addittion off a micro brewery.
  5. The Ferry Inn Horning have posted on another site that they will be closing today, 02/01/23 for refurbishments and will re open on 10/02/23.
  6. One of my favourite pubs was The Fox & Hounds in Loddon. Run by Kelly and Monica Scarfe.
  7. Hi Kevin. Barbara was driving my car slightly over the limit when I spotted a camera van. I shouted watch out there’s a camera van to which she replied, What camper van, what are you talking about? Luckily she must have been just under limit for a speeding ticket.

    Brrr!

Hi Kevin. I can’t think why. The temperature actually reached 4 degrees c today and we had bright sunshine. All the frost has now cleared. We changed our plan and went to Yarmouth this morning, not overly impressed by the new market, but it’s not finished yet so should give it a chance. Came back via Potter Heigham, Stalham, Horning and Wroxham but didn’t see any river traffic. Richardson’s had ice in their main basins and the dinghy basin at the New Inn was iced over but nothing that should put you off on the main rivers. Go for it, that’s what I say.

    Brrr!

Hi Kevin. Yes we are staying at the Brick Kilns. Arrived Norfolk mid day yesterday. Went To Dereham, Wroxham and booked into pub at about 17.00. Today we went to Potter Heigham, Wayford Bridge Garden Nursery, Acle and back to base 17.00. Just finished our meal. Tomorrow we will probably go into Norwich. It’s just nice to be away.

    Brrr!

We travelled up from Kent this morning for a pre Christmas break. Last night we had a fair amount of snow where we live which made us doubt if we would be able to travel today. I checked Barnes Brinkcraft webcam this morning and it showed no signs of snow so we decided to make the journey. There was snow on the ground / roads until we got to Thetford, after which where there was no sign of snow for the rest of our journey to Wroxham.
  11. It was also in the ownership of the family who ran the Broads Hotel Hoverton. The landlady was Helen but I can’t remember her husband’s name.
  12. When you book through Hoseasons their Ts & Cs state that the party must contain at least 2 adults over the age of 18. You also have to tick Yes or No whether any of the party have mobility issues.
  13. Could you book direct with Silverline or did you have to go through Hoseasons. If you booked through Hoseasons the Ts & Cs would be the same. The starting destination would be different so you would have to be offered and accept the change. A previous post from a forum member who had booked through Hoseasons posted that, he had been notified of the change by Hoseasons and 10% discount was being offered for any inconvenience caused. Hoseasons told him he was one of 300 customers being contacted. Hoseasons Ts & Cs state that there must be at least 2 persons over the age 18 and they also ask if any person has mobility issues. I can’t see Silverline Ts & Cs as their websites are off line for maintenance updates.
  14. Sorry, you are correct the registration number was D135 not D137. If you look at the picture Vaughan has posted above you will see the name is on the superstructure on the varnish to the left of the cockpit door. This was so for No’s 1,2 and 3 but on number 4 it was in the same place but but within a white panel.
  15. We hired White Emblem 4. Registration No D137 from Ernest Collins Wroxham from 1970 to 1975 for 4 weeks per year. 2 weeks in April and 2 weeks in September. There were 4 White Emblems in the fleet. Beautiful boat in those days. Ernest Collins built their own boats and had their yard opposite to where Brinkcraft are now. They were eventually taken over by Jack Powels. The last boat they built was Astral Emblem 1.
  16. I see N Y A have a new addition to the hire fleet in 2023. It is a 4 berth named Evita, price range £1785.00 to £3623.00 per week.
  17. Hi Simon. It was good to meet and chat with you this morning. I was very impressed with your approach to the moorings at Reedham and the assistance from the BA Quay Ranger. Having hired Silver Emblem I agree with you, the stern mooring platform could do with being a bit longer to make easier to use, when moored side on. I hope that this experience as a solo hirer gives you the confidence to enjoy many more years boating on the broads.
  18. The mould lay ups were done a Brundall (A lot of the time out in the open air.) I seem to remember Langford Snr telling me that he couldn’t get planning permission to lay up the moulds at the St Olaves yard. St Olaves was where Alpha Craft was originally started by his father. At that time the fleet were all wooden boats which were built within the boat shed there. When his father died Langford Snr took over and expanded the business, selling off the wooden boats and introducing his now famous GRP boats. He had a boat builder that used to fit the boats out at St Olaves.
  19. Barnes Brinkcraft have 10 boats from their current hire fleet up for sale with Norfolk Boat Sales.
  20. The Rising Sun at Coltishall. It’s right on the river, does accommodation and very popular spot for Canoes, Paddleboards and Kayaks.
  21. The 4 digit number + letter, same as your format, was introduced in 2017. If you Google Norfolk broads boat registration numbers and select History of registration numbers there is a history of registration number formats.
  22. Just seen Water Rail on Barnes Brinkcraft Webcam.
  23. Welcome to the forum. Looking forward to further posts.
