  1. Chance here to add some class - plenty of choice these days on the Net to buy a lovely brass one which of course, you have to blow into. Bit like having brass clocks and barometers - shows a bit of pride in having one!
  2. I have used them, but it's siting is not really suitable for a commercial operation for 12 hours a day. Perhaps before anyone else comments, they should take time and read the link to the reasons for refusal - hardly surprising that its been refused. What started, I guess as a bit of a hobby thing , now wants to turn itself into a commercial enterprise - not quite the same thing and it is quite interesting to read the comments in particular, from the Highway Authority.
  3. Andrew - most of Ludham is outside the BA's area - it only extends up Horsefen Road to the main road junction - indeed it ceases just before you get to the triangle at the end of the road. And as far as the NW&D Canal is concerned, yes it is privately owned and indeed my OS map shows the limit of navigation to be at the corner where you branch off towards Dilham - and that is my understanding of the situation as well. Just because a waterway or Broad is within the Executive Boundary, does not mean it has navigable rights - Hoveton Great Broad and all that area a classic example!!!
  4. Fred - I wonder whose side you are on in respect of the pub that was demolished? Sadly there is no point in having rules, whether you agree with them or not, that can be ignored just because you disagree with them, or it doesn't suit you. As Griff has said, use the other stores in the village - after all I expect they pay business rates. Help them out and everyone will be a bit happier I guess - if as a result you make less profit, at least you are helping someone else and who knows you may sell more of your products!!
  5. As always we may not know the full story. It is after all the job of the BA as planning authority to deal with planning breaches. It won't be the first time planning authorities have closed down a small business as it breaches planning controls - where do you draw the line? Perhaps someone has complained and they then have little choice but to act? Its perhaps the regulation that is wrong, not the BA necessarily.
  6. I wondered who would be the first to remember that the one way cruising had been tried, unsuccessfully, before!!!!
  7. I can tell you that typically, ex Broads boats, tend to have interest before they are listed - NYA seem to know the market,as indeed do, I suspect others, that they are virtually presold, even in the current market. You have to remember that most sales are to people who have long paid off their mortgages! Just because the newspapers are full of dire tales of poverty and such like, and interest levels are high, I think it unlikely that boat prices will come tumbling down - it didn't happen in 2008 and it doesn't look as though its going to happen again. Ok - some boats may hang around, and in some cases, owners have unrealistic expectations, just like houses, but good quality Broads boats, will sell relatively easily at the right price. Make sure you leave your number with the Brokers and discuss with them what you want - you may be surprised. Invariably they know the market well and with correctly priced boats, will have a list of prospective purchasers as soon as one pops up!
  8. As far as the AF at Waterside I would say any remedial work is probably built into the price!!!
  9. Broads cruisers nearly always go at a premium simply because over the last 20 years or so the stock continues to decline with so few new boats coming out of the sheds, particularly in that size range. Demand always outstrips supply!!! Even for 25 yr old Broads boats you will probably need to up your budget by some margin - its also a difficult size range - halfway between the two markets of sub 30 footers and then the 35' and above. Dont forget that boats like the Sancerre are probably knocking on 50 yrs or more these days, although you may be lucky to find a good one!
  10. Nothing changes - always been a rat run past the Parson Woodforde for as long as I can remember - and thats a long time!!!!!!
  11. Why would anyone want to listen to me - but I actually have a view! Step onto a Siesta or an Ensign and they move about like large day boat! Which of course they would as that really is what they are - with the greatest of respect! The Hampton Safari group, and the Calypso, carry a wider beam and with I suspect a heavier lay up, will behave very differently - I know where my preference would lay!
  12. There must still be hundreds of those shaver points still on boats on the Broads and many even without the isolation switch. Food for thought?? If they are a potential danger, I wonder why they are not included in the BSS??
  13. Must admit I was unaware that they had closed the navigation- it was only recently that they cut the weed back in the channel!
  14. They can indeed be replaced but only if the insurance pay up! When I had an electrical fire, they refused to on the basis that the cables were old and the system had not been checked regularly - who gets their whole electrical system checked by anyone throughout the boat on a regular basis? Where do you start? Old Gregg however makes the most valid point about turning the electrics off on a vacant boat, apart from the bilge pump. Mine just happened to start when I was moored up in the marina and I was aboard and alerted by the smouldering - turning the power off stopped further damage but it was touch and go. Flames had already started, albeit small but as soon as I turned the power off, they died down. So learn to shut down completely, and that includes your seacocks too, and do it every time you leave your boat unattended - just make it a habit! However the claim was turned down for the reasons stated above and that was one of the leading boat insurers, so I am keeping my fingers crossed for the owners!!!!!
  15. See - ask a man who knows like Tom and you will get the answer rather than just guessing!!! Always the wrong thing to do - do not guess just ask someone who knows!! Thanks Tom - jobs a good 'un!!!
  16. Well - ring him up and ask!!!!!
  17. Why ask the Forum? Talk to the Rivers Engineer at the BA - he is a very nice guy honestly!!!! He will give you the answer off the top of his head, so to speak
  18. That was probably the EA who cut the river banks to check condition of the flood defences on an annual basis - usually seen on the slopey bits with a big machine.
  19. Darude "Sandstorm"!!!! You have real taste for a Northerner, Griff!!! Excellent tune to strut your stuff to!!!!!!
  20. Equally, I see far more all male parties behaving perfectly normally!! Is there a way to tell ,in advance how they will behave? At the same time why confine that comment to male parties? In the day, and I agree it was a some time ago, it was often felt by the yard, that the all girl boats were even worse!! I have also seen mixed groups behaving inappropriately, of all ages!
  21. Never get that hassle mudweighting!!!! Oh well leave the noise ashore and the peace to those swinging on a piece of rope!!!!
  22. Ooops - I should have added "allegedly"
  23. And that about sums it up - not quite what Vaughan, with respect, would imply by calling it "famous and important"!!! It might have been perhaps 100 years or so ago but its been a dump for as long as I can remember, firstly when it was run by Mr Hollocks Sr and now his successor. No one should flout planning legislation which most of us abide by, and the the old man was a thorn in the flesh years ago with illegally parked vans, and know his successor too!
  24. Not as easy as cars I believe! They will all belong to someone whose responsibility they remain, and the BA will need, probably to go through the courts. Technically, I do not think they can even lift them and move them to their yard. And the bigger they are, the harder it all becomes
