  1. I was just trying to justify going through horning with both turbos at full boost to keep the smoke down..... Am I right in thinking 4 in mph is about 21 in knots? Must have a dodgy conversion table officer.
  2. May not have made any difference depending on engines, my volvo TMD41's are renowned for smoking on startup, there is no cure, they would have done it from new, unfortunately it is the nature of a lower compression direct injection diesel, the lower powered TMD40's are better as they run a higher compression ratio, any engine with a turbo or supercharger generally runs at lower compression ratio depending on the level of boost given by the turbo. There's a lot of those engines about in various forms. Apologies for the somewhat anal reply...... As for warming up unless a seriously cold start I normally undo all springs and just leave short fore/aft lines before firing up the gasbags for my own preservation as much as anyone elses, I'd rather get moving and not have to breathe that crud. If heading out to sea it's a different matter, I want some heat in the oil before it gets opened up.
  3. I have a chartplotter on board that shows me exactly what speed I'm doing over ground, and I take no notice of it most of the time as speed over ground limits are worthless on tidal water and achieve sod all unless about to moor and then you should be way below cruising speed anyway, as said before wash is the key and slow down for moored boats regardless of wether over the limit or not. You will often see boats going through reedham past the ranger at 7mph + and he pays no attention if going with a strong tide, go through at 5mph against it and you will probably get the paddle waved at you. It's common sense and consideration, don't try to keep up over breydon when it's a clear run though....
  4. Or Skegness lifeboat, they are a nice bunch too, and good at towing......
  5. We've done st.bennets to the dog before on foot, that was a fair trek, and years ago as hirers we did wayford bridge to white horse neatishead (admitedly on pushbikes).
  6. Mudweights drag but if still in the channel I wouldn't have thought one would drag up the side of the channel easily as it's pretty steep these days. That said by the time an inexperienced crew realise and act a good blow can take a drifting boat well out of the channel.
  7. I usually have a battery drill and grinder in my tool bag as there is usually a job on the go somewhere.
  8. The whale can handle crud like hair and the like ok where centrifugal pumps get jammed, they do sound like a menstrating duck as the shower tray runs dry though.
  9. At the end of our last 2 week trip on the boat we took the fridge home with us, does that count? We did bring it back the next visit hopefully slightly more efficient and a lot cleaner.
  10. Must be a husky/shepard thing then, mine is husky/shepard/lab mix and it's very rare to hear anything from him, knock on the door though and he makes a hell of a racket and doubles in size, trouble is the tail keeps wagging which ruins the dangerous dog effect.
  11. The one at brammerton was probably the richos boat hired by a local family to surlingham and probably either own the private mooring or know the owners, they certainly had the boat at the weekend as they spent friday night at the ferryhouse.
  12. Or Paul at clemments engineering, he knows most things prop and does a lovely job on them.
  13. What size and how much? It's something I'm looking to get done, so far the best option is £250 cash via a local fabricator, mine is 200 litres with a V shaped bottom.
  14. To give the dog a bit of grip and confidence on wet grp a cheap bathmat does a good job and usually has suckers on the underside to stop the mat sliding.
  15. If air has got into the system they can take a few startup attempts to re-prime the system but voltage is most likely culprit. have a look here http://www.letonkinoisvarnish.co.uk and look at their eberspacher pages, they have most of the answers and tricks to eber issues.
  16. If asked for ID it's very simple, look into a mirror and say "yep that's me".
  17. My best gear issue was on the gt.ouse in a norman 25 during a big rowing regatta, going upstream they would hold the boats back till a race went off and let the cruisers follow up through the race lanes (you'd never catch the rowers at river speed), I held back holding station nicely till I was given the signal to go and as I went into forward gear and gave it some throttle I discovered the gear cable had jumped off in reverse gear, backwards we shot shouting at the rowers waiting for the next race to get out of the way as all I could do was reverse till we reached the bank. Luckily only a few thousand spectators, even more luckily before youtube....
  18. The opposite of this then.... Does the chelmer actually check for licences on canoes?
  19. Cut it straight and remount the boarding ladder to suit the new edge, that protrusion is a crappy bit of design as proved by the damage.
  20. Theres plenty of syndicate planes too, when you get it wrong I do a good line in shock load inspections and know a good prop shop.
  21. If first timing on the southern rivers don't forget you need to moor against the tide which may mean going past and turning round and leave plenty of slack on the ropes, it runs a good deal harder than the northern softies are used to.
  22. Yes surlingham was pretty busy saturday but you would have got in later on as a lot departed after the music, we had 2 on the outside rafted. I did hear someone got a punch on the snout after the music at coldham over music played a bit too loud on a boat, won't mention names though.
  23. Just 12v, the gas/240/12 are the ones that eat batteries as they use a heating element to work, the fridge in question was great for smaller boats as it was a drawer fridge mounted below a dinette seat with the compressor unit unwound and fed through to the base of the cupboard beside it, we once forgot to turn it off and left the drawer open over a really hot and humid week, when we returned the next weekend there was still frost on the evaporator plate and the outboard still started (albeit a bit slow to crank), that was a bloody good fridge (waeco with danfoss compressor). I wouldn't touch a gas/240/12 fridge.
  24. Don't be silly, it was planned in a pub! As was the decision to cut the cabin off in the first place. It started looking like this. Went through the hands of a major bodger. And ended up like this. There's more piccies at my old webpage.
  25. When designing a new canopy think about where the poles are going to rest when folded down as well or they will be a PITA in the wrong place, when I had a canopy made for a norman 25 that I had cut the aft cabin off I planned in sliding mounts so when dropped the front pole hooked over the screen and sat out of the way and the rear pole slid forward so it didn't hang over the back of the boat too far, it worked very well and the screen could still be dropped in seconds with the pole in front of it.
