  1. Hi Bill the new picture does show a passenger ferry of sorts and looking closely at the picture there is a chain attached to the front end. The Buckenham ferry was out of service by 1940 it was a chain ferry but the road leading up to the Beachamp Arms suggests a larger form of ferry, maybe it was replaced with the smaller ferry in your picture by the 60's, If you could blow up the sign behind the cars it may give a clue to where it was. Regards Alan

  4. Hi Fred, We did the Cheshire Ring the year before last, the advice not to stop in the City is just in my opinion, there was 6 people on our boat but we talked to crews of 2 that were intimidated by the druggies and drunks that are on the section that goes under the City, unlike Birmingham, Manchester has turned its back on the canal system which is a pity because sections of it were where the canal system was born. Getting back to the topic. I think one reason why I dislike and have never moored at Yarmouth is because the journey towards Yarmouth after Stracey Mill tends go down hill fast the nearer you get to Yarmouth, the banksides are run down, shallow with no mooring other than the Yacht Station which to me is not ideal because of the fixed moorings, if there was moorings off of the river that were on pontoons it would be safer for everyone especially for overnight moorings. Security is poor and none at night. The beach is ok once you get there but we have only been there once. The opinions above are mine alone. What do you think? Regards Alan
  5. Urgent Boating News Please note - We advise that you always check the Notices to Mariners section for further information Ludham Bridge 24hr Moorings Please be advised that for safety reasons a large section in the centre of the Ludham Bridge 24hr moorings has been taped off due to some large holes which have appeared on the moorings. Change to Notice to Mariners No. 9 Please note that due to adverse conditions the dredging works will not take place between Monday 30 September and Friday 4 October but are now re-scheduled for the period 7 – 21 October 2013. All other information remains the same. Neatishead Staithe This is to confirm that Neatishead Staithe has now been reopened. Reedham Swing Bridge Please note that due to a technical fault the bridge opening information sign at Reedham Swing Bridge is now permanently showing 20 minutes. This sign will remain like this until it can be repaired Broads Authority 24hr Moorings at Worlingham Please note that a small section of the 24hr moorings has currently been taped off. This is due to some dead branches on the large tree in that section that need attention. There are bats roosting in the tree and so we are currently in the process of gaining the correct permission in order for us to carry out the proposed works. As soon as the works are carried out the taped section of the moorings will be made available for use. Taken from the B.A. website this morning. Regards Alan

  13. The chain ferry at Buckenham ceased around 1940, across the river was a house and staithe that were all demolished before or during the 60's I believe. At one time the house was licenced as the Buckenham Ferry the licence ceased in 1872 when it became a private dwelling. Regards Alan
