Guest
No worries Helen, we never made Somerleyton today (more to follow) either. I really need to be in Norwich Wednesday morning so may possibly see you there, if not we may bump into you later in the holiday. Hope you all enjoy yourselves regardless, I will keep an eye out for you on the waters, but give us a passing wave incase I miss you if we do cross paths. Enjoy
Guest
So... Monday 26th March Today was always going to be a relaxed day. My little one never the earliest riser chose to have a lie in once again, which gave me chance to wake up, come round, check morning messages, take the dog for walk and tidy the boat a little. With such a beautiful morning we could sit with the roof drawn back (In all honesty I think that is actually what awoke her little highness by the look of her face as she emerged from her bedroom). So sat drinking coffee and catching up on what had been happening elsewhere there was absolutely no rush to do anything at all. So basically we didn't. Other than chat in the sunshine and watch the passing boats. Eventually I guessed I really ought to do something today so showered filled up with water (the boat not me) and then we headed off for possibly Somerleyton. Beautiful sunshine shone down on us as we progressed along the river Yare, and my youngest took the helm for most of the journey which remained quiet and uneventful. We eventually meandered upon Cantley and decided we would have a dinnertime stop here to enjoy the beer garden of the Reedcutter. Littlest helped moor up very well holding onto one of the ropes which I handed to her, and then off we set for a quick drink in the sunshine Warning, second contentious picture coming up. Actually I see a theme here. Yes I am going around the world this holiday on lager. Yesterday France today.... oh God, it's the USA before we returned to the boat for the youngest's dinner. As a couple of people are aware I have some training which required continuing, once that was completed it was time for another shower . Here is a random picture through the window of my bedroom. I forget why... before we walked the dog again. By this time we seemed quite happy to just stay and enjoy the sunshine, so as the little one enjoyed doing her artwork I went onto the bow to lay enjoying the sunshine, against the pulpit rails....daydreaming about all sorts if thing. As the sun descended we headed out for another walk and another quick visit inside the pub which was empty, this visit was to warm up obviously, before we headed back to the boat for tea and relaxation. So once again, another day of very little happening, but really, isn't that what this Broads life is all about. Relaxation and Contemplation. Having said that I doubt I can do this nothingness for long so we shall see where it goes from here.

Fantastic photos again though JF, can't get over how blue the sky is, you've done very well with the weather. You don't see that many flappy things on the Yare either, particularly at this time of year. I hope our Sussex Princess is looking in. Keep up the good work 1

Guest
Tuesday 27th March Sorry folks, being on my own with a younger one doesn't leave too much time for all day cruising and such as I like. Tomorrow however I am due to pick up another part of the crew before I have to pick up the final member on Friday so here on in I should hopefully be able to have more time to go further afield without having to entertain a younger one on my own. Anyway, apologies over, today started early doors looking out of the window to a grey wet morning. My phone told me it was 6°C in Cantley so I got up and sorted the usual morning routines out before taking the dog for a leisurely wet walk. Once we returned to the boat I had time to have a coffee and breakfast alone, and then another coffee as I caught up on messages, and another coffee as I caught up on the news...anyway finally tiring of my youngest actually getting up the early side of noon i decided to set off with her still audibly snoring in her bed. Ropes cast off I headed out from Cantley, and back up the Yare towards Brundall once more. Wouldn't you know it as soon as I had sorted everything and just sat into my seat, a bedroom door opens and a terrifying mass of hair emerges. Beneath it an unhappy face looks out at me as if to question why it had been awoken at a few minutes to 10 in the morning. The journey up the Yare was uneventful, fighting the tide as I once again paid no attention to what time was best to make my journey, I did pass a couple of boats decked out with Jolly Rogers. The crew I saw wouldn't have worried even my youngest had they decided to try and board our boat but I'm sure they were having fun nonetheless. Reaching Bramerton there was only a couple of boats moored so we headed in to moor up. Once again my youngest had decided to go explore her bedroom so I was left to solo moor up as is my norm these days. Not a problem. Unless as you step off the boat and take the ropes you think, why is the water pushing the boat backwards so strong....yes, idiot here had left the boat in reverse as I stepped off and I had a jolly good laugh (description of emotion may not be accurate) as I rectified my mistake and swiftly tied the boat up, whilst being messaged by someone also not having the best day asking why my replies were not so chirpy today Once safely moored on a sludgy Bramerton it was time for the daily exercise which took me through Rockland and Claxton before heading back to Bramerton, as I passed Rockland Staithe on my return leg I am sure I passed Ynysmon moored up but could be mistaken. After showering I delighted my youngest with the news we were going for a walk to The Surlingham Ferry. I don't think she told me once how much she hated walking and how tired her legs were, or maybe I was too busy singing songs to myself to notice. Anyway roughly 2 miles along the muddy Wherrymans Way (a swift refreshment break) and around 2.5 miles back along the road (I wouldn't advise it) we returned back to the boat for a youngster cooked tea, relaxation and great conversation. SwanR
Thanks for sharing your photos. Looks like it was quite a grey day in contrast to the earlier sunshine. What I am intrigued to know is this ... when one takes out a hire boat one is always advised to run the engine for three to four hours per day to keep the batteries topped up. But private and syndicate owners often write of days with only a short amount of cruising. Is there some secret to this or do your batteries hold their charge better or what do you aim for? I wouldn't answer for anyone else but on MS we have a battery monitor which gives the state of charge of all batteries so you know when they are 100%. It doesn't take long at all to charge them back up once the engine is running. It isn't very often we do short days really, yesterday an exception but then I was plugged in overnight which charged the batteries anyway, and I feel today will be a long cruise somewhere after visiting the train station in Norwich. I'm sure someone more knowledgeble will answer better than I.
NorfolkNog
Hi Jean I think some yards err on the side of caution as they hate being called out for flat batteries! In all my years of hire I've never had a flat battery Swancraft were superb but most yards have reasonable batteries and charging systems I've also never plugged in during many years of hire It depends how you use them of course. If you sit on the boat with all lights blazing, TV on, inverter on, pumps running etc you will use more battery power. The trick is to remember that you are running off batteries and not the mains! It's worth running the engine while using a microwave for instance but not so you annoy others. Best bet is to switch everything off and go to the pub 6 1

I think some of your questions may of been answered. For us SK was built in the 90s,she does not have any mod cons. Therefore when we can we run the boat for a few hours at a time. This helps to top up the batteries, she does not have shore power. As much as we love the boat think I would prefer SP.Since we have owned SK,we have replaced 3 batteries. We will be on the boat Friday hoping to be at Loddon overnight and we are booked in at Surlingham ferry house. Our first trip of the year.Looking forward to it. 1
vanessan
There comes a point when all batteries have had enough and give up on you! We had to replace all five of ours the year before last, 4 domestics and 1 engine. I think all of them were about 9 years old and, from what I have read on the forum, that is probably the average lifespan. Back to Jayfire’s post. Lovely sunrise at Bramerton, is that heralding a good day today?
