Millwall V Canaries - A New Experience.

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone, apologies I've not posted in aaagggeeesss, I haven't had much time for internet socialising lately, however I've missed the forum. I've been keeping an eye on a few threads to keep up with what's going on in the heady world of broads boating, today however I'm doing something different and new to me, Norfolk related but not boaty, and I thought I'd share it.

I'm off to see Norwich away to Millwall which I hope will be an experience. If you'd asked me this time last year if I liked football l'd have said no. However I'd now probably say I like to watch a live match. I've never been a football fan preferring summer games at school, but last year I discovered I get Leyton Orient tickets at a staff discount, not one to miss a perk, I went to see a couple of matches at Brisbane Road, and thoroughly enjoyed myself. It's got a great supporters associate club bar too😁 So when I heard friend of a friend had a spare ticket to go and see Norwich away to Millwall I couldn't say no.

So here I am on the Jubilee Line enroute to London Bridge and the away pub! This is my 1st ever away match. Assuming I survive, I'll report back later! Any tips from footy fans about surviving Millwall will be gratefully received.

Hi Londonlad,

Millwall used to have a very bad reputation for violent fans, especially at home games. However, that was back in the days of major football violence, of which the FA went to great lengths, as did the clubs themselves to stamp this out. Millwall put in one hell of a lot of effort to get rid of the violent element of their fans, and were very much successful. Nowadays, i think (though not 100%), it`s more friendly "banter", and not to be worried about.

I used to love football, and from about the age of 8 was a lifelong Chelsea fan. Now however, i really can`t stand to watch (as Guy Martin" put it) 22 millionaires kick a bag of wind about for nearly 2 hours, while trying to look like a bunch of male models. I would however be interested to watch a local village game between pubs, schools, or social club teams etc.

Now, if you`re talking about British Superbikes? ............................Β

I've been there many times as a West ham fan and if there is going to be any trouble it's when we visit.Β

Believe it or not, when travelling by train it's one of the safest grounds to visit. A dedicated station, straight off the train and into the away end. No mixing at all with the home fans.

Good atmosphere there, hope you enjoy it.Β

Even though i was a life long Chelsea fan, iΒ  always used to support Hammers, and Crystal Palace. I always used to keep an eye on the London teams, Fulham, Charlton Athletic, , Leyton Orient etc, as i grew up in North West Kent, so most of them could be classed as local.Β  Anyway, my local team, Gravesend and Northfleet, (now Ebsfleet United) were always in Conference South or Conference leagues.

Well I'm home and survived. An excellent way to spend the day IMHO. The EDP summed the matchΒ up better than I ever could. All in all a thoroughly good day. The whole thing ran like clock work from London bridge, through the game and back again,Β and we didn't even get the chance to mix with the home fans - what else would you expect from a central London fixture.

The Canaries fans were vocal and supportive the whole match, it was a great atmosphere, as we were at the end of the stand, the gobbier fans got to eyeball their Millwall counterparts and exchange unpleasantries, all in reasonably good spirits. On balance I'd reccomend it.Β

Have a look at the league table, makes me happy, and what a great tribute to our legend,Billy Bonds. I met him once ,chatted to him for about 10 minutes, got his autograph,a wonderful man just a shame he was injured when he got called up to the England squad.,he deserved an England cap.

Phoned aΒ good friend of mine, an immigrant from London (I'm not prejudiced) who is a born & bred Millwall supporter. His wife answered the phone, Lee, her husband has gone into hibernation! Must have thought that I was going to wind him up. On the ball, City . . . . . . . . . .Β
