ranworthbreeze
The summer season is with us again. Good afternoon We have been informed by Network Rail that Somerleyton Bridge is unable to swing due to the heat. Kind regards. NorfolkNog
Not just on the Broads - heard on the news that up here in flat cap land the railway bridge over the Ouse at Selby won't be swinging for the same reason.
RumPunch
Is this a case of the welded lines either side being under compression against the bridge section preventing opening, or that they'd expand into the gap preventing closure again ? Paul
Do they not fit summer rails, after all high summer temperatures have not been uncommon in recent years and Network rail get a decent amount of warning that summer is coming. There should be a penalty for every day the bridge cannot swing.

ranworthbreeze
Good morning Somerleyton Bridge is now operational but advice from Network Rail is that the Victorian bridge will experience high temperatures over the next few days meaning opening cannot be guaranteed. Electronic signage on the bridge is working and Red Flags will be displayed as appropriate. Kind regards. Bytheriver
Network Rail are to conduct major survey of the 3 swing bridges soon Having spent £m's on the rest of the infrastructure & Greater Anglia leasing all new trains they can hardly do less https://www.networkrail.co.uk/running-the-railway/our-routes/anglia/swing-bridge-renewals/
SteveO
We've had "stay out of the sunshine" warnings, "no swimming in rivers" warnings and "water shortage" warnings already today, to say nothing of the usual Covid social distancing bleats and tweets. They'll be wheeling Greta out any day now, just to cheer us up a little bit more.

I heard a warning today that if you are going shopping remember that you may have to queue in the sun, so put on sun block before leaving home .
