Water Rail Out And About.

Recommended Posts

woke up early as usual, had a lazy start, pretty much emptied the fridge with my breakfast cheese and onion turnovers, just a small amount of milk remaining that will do for a coffee at home as the fridge there is bare too.

at about 9am, I fired up the engine and set off for beccles slowly at about 4 1/2 mph, I have noticed at this rpm i use even less fuel, so the trip back from horning church via great yarmouth, then up to rockland, then back and round to oulton broad, followed by the trip up to beccles used about 2 1/2 gallons (i had topped up the tank at horning church moorings from the 20 litre jerry can and that had filled it to the full mark.) i arrived at beccles at the same time as a rain shower, so waited a bit packing before going to get the car, load up, and by 12 o clock I was just setting out, a lovely 3 hour run home despite the warnings that the A12 was closed at junction 25 (southbound), (if you stick to the outside lane and contraflow that goes to the other carriageway, you sail right past the closed section, so technically there is 1 lane open, the signs are very confusing over this point though.

now I have unloaded the car I need to pop down the shops to get something for tea.

well it appears that the scallywags who murdered my hedge and left me to clear up have struck again, during my absence they have removed the pile of scrap that used to be a seagull engine- it was immersed completely in water several years ago, while running so my estimation is that by now will have corroded into an immova=ble lump, not even worth its weight in scrap, anyway they have kindly removed it now. and its now their problem.

Moored up in Rockland short dyke, the dredging runs from the end of the moorings, all the way to the entrance.

It's narrow but passable, I have cleared a paçth fom the footpath, next job varnish

when I say the dredging, I now believe that the works on short dyke were the emptying of the barges and using the spoil for landfill at the back of the footpath.

Just what you need at Ludham Bridge in the busy season a load of workboats taking up the moorings.

Apparently they are fixing a leak, which is why have have a closure notice on the path between Ludham Bridge and How Hill.

And once again, I am back, after upping the pace to complete the 2day job in just 6 hours, I managed to finish on time at 3pm. Packed the car, and hit the road at 4pm. The trip took just over 4 hours, and then it was a visit to lidls to get provisions. Then on to the boat, unload the car and finally get tea under way(a beef lasagna) next, a coffee. Then bed, it's been a stressful day.

After doing some more shopping and a wander into town to visit à few charity shops,  I finally left for a slow cruise down to oulton. I wanted to moor at petos Marsh or Dutch Gardens,  or mudweight in the broad, as we are not due there until tomorrow

As it turned out the only boat at petos Marsh  was a ranger, so I pulled in behind him, sorted. First time I have managed to get in here. Shortly after  he departed. Time for some lunch.

Awoke late( for me) this morning,  I had slept in until 6am, the sun had risen.

Last night I had spent some time fitting the lights ready for the illuminated parade, testing them as it got dark, then treated myself to a pasta bake (deluxe ready meal from lidls) and spent a few hours relaxing and listening to an audio book.

After hearing the whine of a couple of mosquitoes, I rigged the mossie net over the bed, then went to sleep.

As I sat up this morning and looked out of the window,  I was treated to the sight of 2 kingfishers perched on the ladder and railing not more than 6 feet away, I didn't have my good camera to hand so had to make do with the one on my tablet, one stayed long enough to photograph.

Coffee next, then  breakfast.

So a lazy start to the day, it must have been gone 9 before I thought of moving, and as it was just a short hop to the yacht station,  I diverted to the mouth of Oulton dyke first, then back to the yacht station. When I arrived I typically did a perfect stern Moor, with nobody watching, paralleling the Quay heading about 15 feet off, I turned away from the Quay and engaged reverse at tickover, this swung the stern toward the Quay, and ended up about a foot off the Quay, the only witness, the ranger that took my ropes, ah never mind.

Had a great day with all the other wooden boats, chatting  etc. Learning that the illuminated parade and the power boat racing had been cancelled. Ended up going to magic wok for a meal box. Most of the boats have their lights on, just because we took the time to fit them, it's a waste not to use them.

Sounds like the best method as long as there's space to do it. I must admit I tend to be parallel further from the quay than that as if imaginary moored boats were preventing me from being closer , probably just habit.

I was gauging by my boat length and pivot point.
