Poppy
..... on the Thames - but it could happen here! "Mr Howell was prosecuted under Byelaw 26 of the Thames Navigation Licensing and General Byelaws 1993 for ‘failing to navigate the vessel at all times at a safe speed and with due care and caution to prevent avoidable damage or unreasonable disturbance to persons, other vessels or moorings or the river banks and in such manner as to show reasonable consideration for all persons and property in, upon or about the Thames or the banks or towpaths thereof or any land of the Authority’." https://www.gov.uk/government/news/boater-to-pay-4567

JennyMorgan
Quite right to. We can do without idiots like this! We have plenty of 'em!
Viking23
We have plenty of 'em! And photos, videos, and signed witness statements would help in getting rid of them too. It also appears that "no navigation" lights was a factor in this, so navigators be aware. So keep those cameras handy, take pics with and without flash might differentiate between navigation lights on, or off. Lets keep our broads safe. smellyloo
I picture an army of curtain twitchers ..... cameras at ready .................. waiting to name & shame. But wait...... How did we manage to police the waterways before they went digital? Perhaps woody folks were better behaved. That said the bloke in question deserved what he got ....... the result of the red mist descending.
MauriceMynah
Remember... Tarring and feathering should only be done AFTER the birching. Thank heavens he didn't drop litter, he'd have ruddy well been hanged. (Drawn and quartered as well if he'd been smoking within 1000 yards of a child)
Bonzo
That's the Thames for you. Behave like an idiot there and they not only throw the book at you, they throw the whole ruddy library!
GeoffandWendy
I believe he had his boat confiscated as well. This should apply to motorists, who get caught with no licence, tax or mot, not just those driving without insurance. Plus a ban from driving any vehicle for five years minimum, for these offences. including a heavy fine. Drink drivers, banned for five years and those causing an accident, ban for life. Sorry it may sound a bit harsh, but the message has been around long enough now, to make people aware that driving under the influence of alcohol causes accidents. But some people never learn.
SPEEDTRIPLE
And don`t we ALL know what a "NANNY STATE" this country now is?. Just a shame that "the full force of the law" is`nt used for violent offenders who assault our pensioners and kill for a few pounds. I doubt they`d be fined anywhere near that amount?. Put`s it all in perspective really does`nt it, speeding being such a violent and evil thing to do  YAWN.
JennyMorgan
Wonder if any members of the legal fraternity live besides the river at Henley? No, mustn't have naughty thoughts!
Revilo
And what's the chance of 'Mr No Fixed Abode' paying up.....zero I suspect total waste of time!
Bonzo
I could be corrected on this but I did read somewhere that a conviction for an offence on the Thames is a criminal conviction.
ranworthbreeze
Maybe it is down to the The Marine Policing Unit (MPU) being a police force rather than just wardens. They are responsible for policing 47 miles of the River Thames between Dartford and Hampton Court and have been existence since 1798.http://content.met.police.uk/Site/marinepolicingunitRegardsAlan
