Bill, I check all my "O" rings whenever I remove the cap - replaced mine a while ago as like yourself they were cracking.

Not just crap in the water (my waste cap is on the same side as the fresh water filler albeit a long way off), but you may get water in your diesel.

Back on a sensible thread at last. If Regulo can stop sniping anyway!!!

You are MM... American Ford/fine or Whitworth?  I would hazzard a guess of 15mm

Try that one 5/8 in the drop down menu, bit pricey but if you say its for a boat then its justifiable!

Get yourself one of these a couple of nuts some thread lock  and a socket and your done.

or just drill a smaller hole than the thread and thread it into a block of wood as the handle, the thread will cut its own thread in wood. and if you get it right it should float too.

I had the same problem on the Calypso,  plastic fittings and plastic key. I obtained a metal key with a proper tee handle from a chandlers.  A generous application of vasaline on the plastic threads has stopped it binding again. 

I just know this will degenerate the thread rather than elevate.

Just to give you a Legg up 

If your cap is plastic, a metal key will probably just round the hex fitting. 

Drill a couple of holes in it so that you can get a two-pronged key in, that has worked for us in fleet.

The cap is metal Andy, I was going to call it the "Deck filler" but the filler isn't on the deck, it's sitting in Sawbridgeworth typing this!

I use a small plug spanner on mine  ,the outside is hexagonal in shape and it fits  perfectly and as it has a T bar so easy to undo and tighten.
