Propeller

Recommended Posts

Hi all and happy new year.

I think I've already asked about this a while ago but now time's getting on and I need to do something about it.

I have a Norman 18.5 with a 9.9hp 4 stroke Yamaha outboard. It goes pretty well but vibrates a bit and the prop is well worn and needs replacing.

There is no number stamped on the existing one and there seems to be a multitude of options available. Pitch, diameter, etc...........

The boat is used only on The Broads.

Can anyone advise or point me in the direction of a specialist I can talk to?

Regards,

Mark.

www.marine-tech.co.uk  forgot about them..

I think Marine-tec had been mentioned as a good place to contact in another thread, but maybe another forum...

They do have yamahas hanging around, and must break a few now and again.

Other propellors from other manufacturers may fit, but again, Marine-tec would know if this was possible.

New props would come in at over £100 with a good second hand one for around half that, or there are companies that will refurbish, which often drops within the above price range. If in doubt... keep the old one as a get you home spare, once you are sorted.

Steel Developments is a specialist in propellers. It can repair, rebush and supply new, often at significant price advantages to a new one from the dealer.

Marine Tech is very good too. It is a Yamaha dealer.

I've been in touch with Steel Developments and they are going to refurb my existing one.

Thanks everyone.

Mark.

+1

Quite right. They're one of the very few places in the UK with the skills and equipment to repair and adjust aluminum outboard and outdrive propellers, which is much more demanding than the brass and bronze props fitted to shaft drive boats. I've never found any local boat builders that can do other than just send it off to a specialist or replace with new.

I've used steel developments myself to refurb my Volvo Penta's contra-rotating props, saving me hundreds of pounds. They can straighten, reshape, weld missing pieces, rebalance, and rebush any outboard or outdrive prop.

I`ve just clicked on the link in Strows post,  They really seem to be the propeller experts, and it`s well worth the forum keeping their website on file, as i can see them getting a lot of work from the broads, especially when you consider all the underwater obstructions the broads has. I for one would be very interested in their services, should anything happen to Lightning.

I have used their services on a number of occasions but only for outboards

HOWEVER, please try to keep the work and money local. Whilst most boatyards won't have the skills in-house to deal with Prop Problems, we have contacts with many local engineers who can do the job well. Markwell Engineering in Hoveton is a favourite of ours.

I quite agree with supporting local businesses wherever possible. If we don't we simply lose them.

I've also used Brimbelow at Catfield for bronze prop supplies, a very capable firm, able to machine a shaft taper very accurately from an existing prop.

However, for outboard motor alluminium and stainless props, especially duos, I could find no-one in the Broads area that could actually do the work of rebuilding and reprofiling, and rebalancing.

They could only remove and refit the prop, and send it off to a specialist like steel developments, or repair very simple dings.

It's very skillful work, requiring a great deal of very expensive machinery, so I guess the workload just isn't enough locally to support such specialists.

Here's the Steel Developments page explaining how they refurb:

Steel developments also do 4 blade props for most outboards, make quite a difference in manouvering thrust.

I have used steel developments 4 bladed prop on my Suzuki 15Hp, huge improvement on low speed handling and reverse. I purchased new as the repair costs on small outboard props often as much as a new one.

Yes, up to about 25hp, simple alluminium outboard props are around a £100, bigger sizes then climb significantly in price.

My ally duoprops are around £600 new (one set), and stainless are closer to a thousand. The refurb charge of a couple of hundred or so is then a significant saving.

When you wander around  open marinas with boats lifted for the Winter, that's why most props have been removed !
