  1. are there any campsites local to there, they generally have a supply
  2. I am hoping to stick some paint on tomorrow (weather permitting) lidl's had some metal paint in white and black that I bought a tin of each, so it mat get a couple of coats of that. just to weather proof it - even though it is made of exterior ply, I might need to put it under cover tonight as its not looking too bright outside, so it doesnt get wet before its painted.
  3. right, its built now, and time for the piccies. the good thing is it is now a blank canvas, things can be added such as supports for the model to sit in. the added bonus is its big enough to take both models side by side, and at a pinch it will carry my camping gear to the campsite at salhouse. I did screw the two pieces of ply together around the edge, though the through bolts should hold it anyway. I re-used the pull bar I had on an old trolley, this has a wheel castor connecting it to the trolley. the only question is will it steer, as all the wheels are fixed, thinking about it prams steer ok.
  4. This weekend something different, a boat trolly for moving the model(s) around. It will also be useful for moving my camping gear at Salhouse. anyway some pictures later, I have been welding doing metalwork, woodwork. I popped out to the diy shop, bought a whole sheet of hardwood ply (a whole 8 foot by 4 foot sheet was £1 cheaper than a 4 foot by 2 foot piece). the wood has been doubled up to 1" thick, and shortened to 42" x 24" the metal box sections have had 10mm bolts welded into the ends for the axles (wing nuts will be used to hold on the wheels so they will be removable) I found some nice pneumatic rubber tyres on plastic rims a few years back at he boot fair, these will make good wheels, with some plastic spacers that are printing as I type.
  5. https://www.ghacks.net/2017/06/30/photobucket-now-charges-399-for-third-party-hosted-images/ here is one link to the news - $399 a year to allow third party hosting - which they used to do for free. talk about ransomware, there must be millions of images on forums hosted by photobucket.
  6. I hear tell Photobucket have discontinued their images being hosted on third party sites unless you are willing to pay extra for the privilege, this is causing chaos on some forums that dont host their own images, with messages popping up demanding payment where the images were.
  7. I am not sure yet, but I maybe able to get a camping pitch again and attend, it all depends upon my daughters shifts that weekend and whether she needs a lift into work.
  8. Well tonight was a busy one, no work on the models, but I have backed up this thread to 10 word documents, some are over 14mb. I used to have a single word document, but once it got bigger than 90mb I was finding I couldnt open the file properly and see all the pictures - it had grown to over 1130 pages of pictures and text, so instead I decided to make the files smaller this time. next I need to tidy up the documents - resize the pictures to fit the pages, etc.
  9. today I had a delivery, a big long parcel of piano wire, 1m lengths of 0.8mm piano wire, this will make the hinge pins on the small piano hinges. this evening I have installed the pins into the small hinges replacing the stainless steel pins I used to hold them together at the ends. this process uses a drill to spin the wire - helping keep it straight in the hinge while inserting it, and with a cut end it clears the hole as it goes. Anyway I decided I would video the last one as I fitted the pin
  10. I once had to go on a cable locating course, and was showing the trainer from the company that built them how to use one - just to get the piece of paper that said I was qualified (this was after 2 years going to 2 major power stations and tracing and recording their cable routes - as when they disbanded their on site drawing offices, they just threw away all the cable record drawings).
  11. well if all the bridges are shut (or not operational) and there is not enough clearance under others, then they could say its shut
  12. as I passed my test long enough ago, the last time we moved I hired a 7.5 ton van, the last thing loaded was a jigsaw puzzle, it was slid in between the top of the load and the roof.-advanced tetris test passed
  13. so last night I printed a set of hinges 25% bigger, I had some brass wire at 1.2mm which fit the hinge holes, so 3 larger hinges were put together this evening, then a further brass handrail stanchion was turned.
  14. Hinges now have short pins at each end about 30mm of pin at each end, these will be replaced when the longer piano wire hinge pins arrive. the good part of this is that for every challenge this model throws at me I am managing to find solutions.
  15. if you had a pair of boarding planks with blocks underneath at a spacing enough to stop the outboard hitting they could be deployed either side and space the boat off the quay the required amount.
  16. so 3 hinges have now been fettled, and fit together, just got to wait for the hinges to arrive now.
  17. well last night I was doing some thinking, and decided to have a go at making my own piano hinges. I can get small hinges, but not as piano hinges, so this got me to thinking, can i make my own on the 3d printer? well I spent some time last night, drawing up the parts, then printing them out. they do need a little fettling with a small file as they are a fraction tight a fit at the moment, I have ordered some 0.8mm piano wire to make the hinges (I do have some 0.7mm pins but they wont be long enough for a longer hinge. At least this way I can specify the width of the side plates to the width of the wood I am making the frames from. these are made with a 3mm side piece, I may be able to go to 4mm for these frames, if this works I may well print them in black to hide them on the model
  18. I seem to recall my tablet was like that, I had to go in the settings to allow it to override the max volume it set for earphones, can I find the controls I used on my tablet- of course not
  19. well slow progress today, but progress all the same, we now have 5 brass handrail supports, and the red oxide coat has gone on the hull, the blue boot topping will be added after the waterline has been checked again, this will be about 1/2" (13mm) wide, so can cover any minor errors in the red oxide line. the hull is now sitting on its shelf upside down to allow the paint to properly dry out.
  20. so a few little extras have been procured, these are more akin to set dressing, adding those little touches that add realism, various drinking implements, and a few essential tools. I also found some even smaller hinges. There was one item there - a one off hand built drop leaf table - fully functional, beautiful, but at £85 it probably cost more than the original, and wasnt a must have essential item, plus having now checked was a touch more ornate then the one on board.
  21. So, while taking my daughter to work this morning, I spotted signs for a dolls house and miniatures fair, I will be popping along later when it opens as they also work at 1/12 scale, so I may be able to source either fittings or fixtures, at least I will get to know whats out there with respect to 1/12 scale bits. meanwhile its time to make some more brass handrail supports.
  22. its the first o of the word google
